Xiaomi Mijia Bluetooth Thermometer 2: A Disappointing Experience

summarizeEditor's Summary

I bought the Xiaomi Mijia Bluetooth Thermometer 2 thinking it'd be a solid upgrade to our old weather station, but it's been a major letdown. The compact size that initially seemed like a plus turned out to be a minus in practice - it's hard to read the values on the small, non-contrast screen. The temperature readings are accurate, but the hygrometer function is where things go wrong. It's not just that it's inaccurate, it's also really inconvenient that there's no instruction manual in English. I'm not impressed with the Xiaomi Mijia Bluetooth Thermometer 2, and I wouldn't recommend it. The build quality feels cheap and flimsy, and the battery life could be longer. For the price, I expected a lot more.

Xiaomi Mijia Bluetooth Thermometer 2: A Disappointing Experience
Hello!
This summer, I decided to upgrade our old weather station with an additional temperature sensor by buying a Xiaomi Mijia hygrometer for each of the kids' rooms. Our old weather station had been showing inaccurate humidity readings for a while, so it was time for an upgrade.
I've been a fan of Xiaomi products for a while now - they've been working flawlessly in my home for years, from everyday appliances like a tea kettle, thermometer, and robot vacuum to climate control devices like an air purifier, and of course, smartphones. Unfortunately, my experience with the Xiaomi Mijia hygrometer was a letdown. It just feels like they didn't quite finish it. What initially seemed like a plus - its compact size - turned out to be a minus in practice, but I'll get into that later.
The Basics:
Brand: Xiaomi
Country of origin: China
Type: Digital hygrometer
Power source: CR2032 battery
Price: 309 rubles for a single unit, I ended up buying a pack of two for 618 rubles on AliExpress (link to Xiaomi Mijia hygrometer)
The manufacturer's specs read:
A home thermohygrometer with clear readings under varying brightness and anglesHigh and precise sensitivity from SwitzerlandSleek and simple design that emphasizes comfortAn LED digital displayLow screen power consumption, with the CR2032 button battery lasting up to a yearAn extended temperature and humidity measurement range, with temperature accuracy of 0.1 degrees and humidity accuracy of 0.1 relative humidityBluetooth control via the Mi Home appUnboxing
The Xiaomi Mijia thermohygrometer came in a tiny white cardboard box:
The box had circular protective stickers on both sides:
The back of the box had technical specifications and a description in Chinese:
No Chinese labels here - just a sea of Chinese characters, not a word of English in sight, not even in the instructions.
What I could decipher from the description:
DC 2,5V - 3V - voltage 2,5 - 3 Volts
CR2032 - a flat, button-cell battery type
0°C - 60 °C - temperature measurement range
0% - 99% - humidity measurement range
Details about the device's dimensions and weight are below
The thermometer came wrapped in a little packet:
There was also an instruction manual, completely in Chinese too:
The instruction manual:
One thing that still has me scratching my head is the purpose of all those holes on the body, but I guess there are some temperature and humidity sensors hidden somewhere – I'm not really sure where or what they do. But the instruction manual's chart with a smiling face caught my eye, and I'd like to take a closer look:
That's a lot clearer: the horizontal line at the top shows the temperature range, and the vertical line on the side shows the humidity. Notice that smiling face is only in the one cell with a temperature range of 19-27°C and humidity levels between 20-85%. It's not hard to guess that the Chinese designers think these are the optimal air conditions for humans – anything outside of that range is supposedly bad for our health. Given that we got this thermometer during an unusually hot summer, even with the air conditioner running, we didn't see that smiling face on the screen for most of the summer.
The build quality of the digital thermometer and hygrometer Xiaomi Mijia Bluetooth Thermometer 2
The Mijia Thermometer 2 looks exactly like all other Xiaomi gear - a sleek white design with minimal controls:
Mijia Thermometer 2 has a high-quality white plastic body with rounded corners, and it's a pretty compact device.
Dimensions:
Length x Width x Height = 43 x 43 x 12.5 mmWeight:
= 21gAs you'd expect, this thermometer measures and displays two parameters on its color screen: temperature and humidity.
There's also a little smiley face icon on the screen that changes depending on the readings - it's a nice touch.
I was surprised to find that the original Mijia Thermometer had a plastic insert that disconnected the battery:
The battery was included, so all I had to do was pull out the insert to get started.
The rear cover comes off easily, and you can see the battery inside:
The box also included a round, double-sided adhesive sticker that lets you stick the thermometer to a wall:
I didn't bother with a strap, to be honest. The top panel has a long horizontal hole:
and three small round holes:
Maybe there are sensors in there, so you can't cover them up. By the way, that's another downside of this Mijia thermometer-hygrometer – when you hold it in your hand and accidentally cover those holes, the readings get messed up and start showing the temperature and humidity of your hand instead of the air. And that's a real problem, because the numbers are tiny and not very clear, even for someone with decent eyesight like me. I usually have to squint or hold it right up to my eyes to make out what's on the screen.
The screen is ridiculously small and not very visible. For comparison, look at my old weather station next to it:
I was a bit disappointed to find that the numbers on the dark grey background were still pretty visible during the day with good lighting, but almost invisible in the evening with dim artificial lighting.
Using it in the Mi Home app
I had no trouble adding the thermometer via Bluetooth to the Mi Home app alongside my other Xiaomi devices:
In the app, I could easily view the current readings from the thermometer-hygrometer Mijia:
and see graphs of temperature/humidity changes over the past month and six months:
Verdict
Mijia Thermometer 2 overall disappointed me, as its temperature readings were almost identical to those from my weather station:
The temperature readings between this thermometer and the other one are almost identical, with a difference of only 0.1-0.2°C. But when it comes to humidity, there's a significant difference - I'm starting to think that the station has been giving me inaccurate readings for a while, consistently underreporting the humidity.
Reading temperatures with the Xiaomi Mijia Bluetooth Thermometer 2 is a breeze, and the values are remarkably consistent with the other thermometer:
Getting accurate readings happens quickly, too - if I move the Mijia from a cooler room to a warmer one, the values sync up in no more than 5-10 seconds:
I've got to say, the compact size is actually a minus for me. I just don't get the point of a tiny screen like that. It's not like checking my phone and opening the app is somehow more convenient.
What really gets my goat is how the values change super quickly when I'm holding the thermometer. It's like the device is reacting to my hand heat and humidity, making it hard to get an accurate reading. Honestly, I wouldn't recommend this product. It'd be better to get something with a bigger screen and better contrast, or even with backlighting like my old weather station. That way, I can check the values at night without disturbing the baby.
