Apple MacBook Pro M4 Pro 14

I've used this thing for a week, and the build quality is seriously impressive. The 14-inch display is super crisp, and the battery life is longer than I expected. It's a beast of a laptop that can keep up with pros and creatives who need a reliable machine.

My MacBook Adventure: A Windows Refugee's Honest Review

summarizeEditor's Summary

I never thought I'd say this, but my MacBook Pro has completely won me over. I've been a die-hard Windows fanboy for ages, but after a few years of dabbling with Ubuntu, I decided to take the plunge and join the Apple party. I'm so glad I did – my MacBook Pro has been a total game-changer. I've been using it non-stop since I got it, and I'm loving every minute of it. With its sleek design, top-notch performance, and seamless integration with my other Apple devices, I'm never going back to Windows again. The display is seriously stunning – it's like looking at a work of art every time I turn it on. I was blown away by the performance – it's lightning-fast and handles even the toughest tasks with ease. The battery life is amazing – I can go a full day without needing to recharge. I love how easy it is to set up and use – it's like a breath of fresh air compared to Windows. The build quality is top-notch – it feels solid and premium in my hands. I'm loving the integration with my other Apple devices – it's like they were made to work together. I've been using it non-stop since I got it, and I'm loving every minute of it.

I've been a Windows fanboy for as long as I can remember, but I've been experimenting with Ubuntu on my laptops for a few years now. So, when I decided to join the Apple party, I was excited to see how my MacBook Pro would stack up. I've got an iPhone 12, a 15 Pro Max, an iPad Air, an Apple Watch 7, and Apple AirPods, so buying a MacBook was just a matter of time.

I was stuck deciding which device to choose, so I turned to a chat with a neural network (Qwen) to help me figure out my needs. The neural network gave me around 30 questions covering various criteria, such as size, battery life, and usage frequency. Then, I listed all the available models in the store, including their main specs – memory, size, and price.
After that, the neural network gave me a top 3 list of recommended models, explaining why each one was the best choice. That's how I ended up buying my beloved Apple MacBook Pro 14" (2024) (M4 10C CPU, 10C GPU) 16 GB, 512 GB SSD, Space Gray. I bought it from PiterGSM, which I've also reviewed here. They offered free engraving with a Russian keyboard layout, but I didn't need it since I'm a touch typist.
Speaking of engraving, I'm glad I didn't get the Russian keyboard layout. The factory English engraving looks super stylish and minimalist, and I'm perfectly fine without Russian characters.

I didn't take a photo of the box – I didn't think I'd be writing a review back then.
Fresh out of the box, this is what my MacBook Pro looked like when I first unwrapped it. Of course, it came in a classic paper box.I was a bit skeptical about the color at first, but once I saw it in person, I was hooked. I mean, who needs a boring old silver when you can have a sleek and sophisticated space gray? It's definitely a statement piece, and I love it.
The space gray color is a real head-turner. I was a bit hesitant at first, but now I'm obsessed with it.As I mentioned earlier, the keyboard is a real showstopper. I mean, it's not just the design that's impressive – the keys themselves are also incredibly tactile and responsive. And let's not forget the backlighting, which is a total game-changer. I've never seen anything like it before, and I'm so glad I got it.
Of course, I also picked up a few extras to go along with my new MacBook Pro:
I opted for a Bluetooth mouse instead of the original Apple one, mainly because I don't see the point in paying extra for it. Plus, I've heard great things about the Bluetooth connection, so I'm excited to try it out.
I also got a sleeve and a cosmetic case for my charger and mouse, which is a great way to keep everything organized and within reach.
My new accessories have been a total lifesaver. I love how everything fits together seamlessly. One thing that really impressed me about the packaging was the cable. Apple did a great job of matching the color to the MacBook Pro, which is a nice touch. And the magnetic charging connector is super convenient – it makes it easy to plug in and unplug my charger without having to worry about losing it.
Now, let's talk about the MacBook Pro itself:
It's got a 14.2-inch display, 16GB of RAM, and a 3024 x 1964 resolution. The 10-core processor is a beast, and the 1550g weight is surprisingly manageable. I was a bit worried about the weight, but it's actually really comfortable to carry around.
I won't say it's super lightweight, but it's not as heavy as my old HP, despite having the same size. It's not bulky either – it's just a normal laptop thickness, but with a more harmonious, symmetrical, and beautiful design.
The slim, narrow frames, the vibrant display, and the high-quality camera (I was surprised when I first connected to the webcam – it felt like it was a separate camera, not just a laptop webcam).
If I'm just browsing or editing documents, the battery lasts for two to three working days. If I'm coding or editing video, it's just one day. Initially, I wasn't using it at home as much, so I was only charging it once a week, which was a pleasant surprise.
The connection to the Apple ecosystem is seamless – I can connect my iPad as a second monitor, my iPhone as a camera, and so much more. Instant data transfer between devices, and my favorite feature – I copied something on my phone and pasted it on my laptop.
The keyboard is soft and comfortable – I want to highlight the large, attractive keys. Yes, the layout takes some getting used to – I had to find the comma, period, and the letter 'ё' by trial and error, but I got used to it quickly.
There are many features to customize the device to my liking – convenient window placement on the screen, special gestures, and more, which makes working fast and enjoyable.
The speakers produce great, immersive sound – I've been enjoying music on it even more than on my Alexa, while working. The microphone is also excellent – whether for conferences or voice messages in messengers (when you're recording a voice message and typing at the same time, the keyboard sound is barely audible).
Oh, and the fingerprint scanner! I didn't expect how convenient it would be to have it in my laptop... Well, it's convenient. I also found the automatic laptop startup when opening it to be surprisingly convenient.
And, of course, Mac has many possibilities for personalization and fun features, if you dig deep (like setting the sound of the hinge creaking when you open the lid).
I chose Arc as my browser, and it turned out to be very user-friendly and easy to customize.
I've gotta say, setting up apps on the MacBook was a total breeze. I know it sounds weird, but the process of dragging and dropping icons to install them is actually kind of fun. And overall, the interface is super intuitive and feels really nice to use. I've never had a Mac before, but after three days, I was totally comfortable using the laptop.

For context: why I chose the Pro M4.
1. Browsing the web (various services, Google Drive, online docs and spreadsheets) – a MacBook Air would've been enough for this.
2. Programming (I work with JS/TS and Python, and I build desktop apps and simple websites) – this is where I started to think the Pro M4 was the better choice.
3. Video editing (it's not something I do often, but sometimes I need to throw together a quick edit) – at my level, I could've gone with an Air or a Pro M3.
4. Design (working in Figma, including with heavy elements) – this is another area where the Pro M4's extra power started to make sense. My work laptop can't handle some of the projects I work on, and it constantly crashes or takes ages to load. The MacBook Pro, on the other hand, opens everything in seconds and doesn't bat an eye.
xa0
The MacBook is a great product, especially if you're already invested in the Apple ecosystem. The Pro M4 is worth considering if you're not just watching Netflix, but actually working with more demanding software. And when it comes to heavy tasks, this thing flies. Plus, when you factor in the price, it's a pretty sweet deal. For the money, it's hard to find a tool that's this powerful, with this level of quality and ease of use.
