A Distribution Cabinet That's a Game-Changer for Your Home or Office

summarizeEditor's Summary

I've been searching for the perfect distribution cabinet for my projects since 2019, and I'm stoked to say the updated Legrand XL3 series has blown me away. This range of plastic cabinets, including a metal series, checks all my boxes and then some. I needed a floor distribution cabinet for my project in an office building with a decent-sized space - around 160-180 square meters - and this cabinet fits the bill perfectly. With its adjustable depth, removable DIN rails, and a ton of accessories, it's a total winner in my book. I've been using it for a while now, and I gotta say, it's been a game-changer for my workflow. The adjustable depth of the DIN rails is a total game-changer - it's so much easier to customize the setup to my needs. I love that the DIN rails are removable from the frame - it makes maintenance and upgrades a breeze. The cabinet comes with a ton of additional accessories, including cable ties and clips, which is super convenient. The metal used is fully isolated from the cabinet, which is a huge plus for me. The front door can be mounted on either side, which gives me so much flexibility in terms of installation. The panel is removable in sections, making it easy to access the components inside.

Hello there, reader!
I first came across this type of cabinet back in 2019.
We were choosing between enclosures with a lid and wanted something that was cheaper than the ABB ComfortLine series, which is part of the semi-professional and professional automation cabinets. We then looked at plastic cabinets, specifically the Legrand XL3 series and Schneider Electric Pragma. Both are interesting options with their own features. For some reason, since the client was deciding on the look of the components, we went with the Legrand cabinet.
🔶️ INTRODUCTION
The Legrand XL3 series has been updated, and now there's a range of plastic cabinets, including a metal series. This range suited my needs and conditions.
I needed a floor distribution cabinet for my project in an office building with an area of around 160-180 square meters.
The building has different zones, including an office area, a small laboratory complex, assembly areas, and testing stands. The office area was designed to be more relaxed, rather than formal. The cabinet also needed to fit in with the interior design.
We had already purchased a solid cabinet for the main distribution group in the building, and my colleague and I installed a large metal ABB ComfortLine cabinet, which housed large automation components in cast bodies and feeder panels. One line of 5x25mm² VVGNGLS cable came from the main distribution panel to my floor distribution panel, which is what I'm reviewing at the moment.
I chose to go with the non-inbuilt model of the cabinet due to the placement and safety considerations. Plus, I'd already set up cable management systems with my colleagues in the office using Legrand Metra series. We'd installed cable channels to route power outlets for workstations, structured cabling, and other essential components.
xa0
From the floor, we connected the power cable to the main distribution panel and routed the outgoing lines to all the power groups, lighting, and control panels through the bottom input. This type of cabinet has a section that integrates plastic cable channels with the cabinet body seamlessly. To facilitate this, the cabinet's bottom and top 'trays' have sliding plastic lids that can be easily replaced with rubber membranes using additional accessories. However, this design looks neater when you organize cables through the cable channel input or discreetly through the base's technological openings.
xa0
The cabinet's capacity allowed me to calculate the load and plan a solution with a 12-module buffer for future 'smart' lighting control and partial climate management. In essence, the cabinet met my needs and left some room for expansion.
xa0
I often get asked, why I'd spend so much on a cabinet when I could use the difference to get better gear inside?
xa0
Let's be real, one thing doesn't cancel out the other. In many cases, people save up for years to buy their first car, or their first new car. And when they finally do, they plan on driving it for 7 to 10 years. I mean, I don't know anyone who buys a Volvo XC70 or XC90 and then plans on replacing it in just three years, unless you're one of the lucky ones with a rich dad and you don't have to worry about money. Or, I guess, if you're just buying it as a stepping stone to something better. But that's not the norm. Most people buy a Lada Granta, Renault Logan, or Renault Duster, and they treat it like gold. They worry about storing it and keeping it in a garage, which ends up saving you a ton on maintenance costs.
The same goes for the automation shield. Inside the cabinet, it creates a climate.
And yeah, automats do get hot when they're working hard and they release heat. I can show you just how hot they get using a thermal imaging camera. I actually do a yearly inventory of my electrical connections at home, just like the manual says.
xa0
One thing I love about this enclosure is that it makes it easy to access and work on the automation equipment inside. It's a breeze to swap out, repair, or reconfigure the modules, which is super handy given how often we're upgrading our lighting and smart home devices. With all the low-voltage gear we're using these days, it's a real challenge to find space in the cabinet for everything – and that's before you even think about surge protection, human safety, and all the other important features that keep our equipment and homes safe. When you're shopping for a system like this, it's essential to weigh the pros and cons and make informed decisions about what you need and what you can live without. The cabinet itself is never a 'given' – you need to leave some room for future upgrades, and the rule of thumb is to reserve 25% of the space for that.
xa0
🔶️ Legrand XL3 125 Plastic Enclosed Cabinet.
When you're browsing through enclosures, you might come across descriptions like 'wall-mounted modular distribution cabinet with open wiring.'
It has a capacity of 4 x 18 modules (72)The door is whiteIt comes with N+PE busbarsThe maximum rated current is 125AIt has an IP40 dust and moisture protection rating (ideal for dry and clean environments)The product code for this model is Legrand 401649It's part of the XL3 125 series. The dimensions are: 750 mm high, 450 mm wide, and 128 mm deep.xa0
I was impressed to find that the cabinet arrived in a sturdy cardboard box, complete with a warning that the assembly was done in France.
xa0
I've noticed that since 2021, the cabinets have been shipped from Poland. And let me tell you, the stylish Legrand packaging was nowhere to be found. Instead, the cabinet comes in a pretty basic, transparent, heat-sealed plastic bag. It's essentially the economy option, but the contents remain the same, depending on the specific model you choose.
From the description:
The cabinet is designed for installing circuit breakers and protective devices (such as differential circuit breakers or RCDs) in electrical circuits with a voltage of up to 400 Volts and a frequency of 50 Hz. The nominal current should not exceed 125 Amps.
It's suitable for office buildings, hotels, cultural and entertainment centers, residential homes, and country houses in dry areas.
xa0
The cabinet's body is made of a heat-resistant, self-extinguishing thermoplastic.
xa0
This panel protects against accidental contact with the live elements of the devices installed in the cabinet.
As you can see from the picture, the cabinet has a compact design.
Check out the side ribs, which are perfect for a compact suitcase. The top of the cabinet has a protective blue film, and the entire body has a transparent protective film. This is super convenient when you're installing the cabinet on the wall, and the final paint or plaster job isn't complete yet.xa0
The side handle has a gap with a press mechanism, making it super easy to use. You can even swap the lid out for a different one - clear or decorative - if you want. And, if you need to, you can get a lock with a key installed directly into the handle.
I've gotta say, the door is super easy to remove and change the way it opens - from right to left and vice versa.
The doors come in a few different colors, including
one with a clear insert, aluminum, matte black;you can even get it custom-painted or print a design directly onto the door.xa0
What's in the box:
a removable and swiveling frame (equipped with rails, can be installed either at the top or bottom)rails in two positions (for installing modular equipment or a DPX3 160 switch), the mounting rails can be removed individually without any toolscable inputs (top and bottom), can be removed without any toolsface panels (plastron) 1 per rowshims N + PE (can be installed and removed without any tools)a pre-printed sheet with self-adhesive labels for identifying cables and marking modulesxa0

What to expect from the cabinet
✅ Like any half-professional or professional series cabinet, you'll find separate elements like
the back panelthe DIN rail framethe front panel with doorsare all separate components.
xa0
✅ The back panel has six mounting points, making it easy to install on-site. You could even hang from it if you're feeling adventurous. The design is solid and well thought out.
xa0
✅ The top and bottom edges of the back panel are hinged and can be slid open. They're also perforated to allow for easy cable management. You can route cables through the panel in various ways to keep your setup tidy.
The box includes a digital dimension marking on the box itself. There are also markings on the PVC tubes or in the Hermawan tubes (if there are Hermawan tubes). And, of course, there are markings on the PVC tubes. So, you can simply put the marking where you plan to route the cable and cut out the prepared template holes according to the marking.
Additionally, you can order one or two terminal caps with membranes.xa0
✅ The removable, and in this case, disassemblable frame allows you to do the pre-assembly of the case on the table. And then you can either
remove the frame and put it on the already installed back panelor divide the assembly by the rails and start connecting the layers one by one, starting from the inputThat's exactly what I did on the table
. Under the modular automata a spacious gap is formed for cable routing through the channel under the DIN rails. Here, on the front plane, you can see the factory-made mounting clips for cable ties (straps). I'll mention these details later.
xa0
It was easy to perform a 3-phase diagnosis and automation testing using simple devices and a multimeter.xa0
Next, during the installation process, it's a good idea to connect the wires step by step.
✅ The shield has a convenient design for securing and removing the DIN rail. It doesn't matter if it's empty or has automation modules.
There's a finger rest and by simultaneously pressing the protrusions on the right and left of the DIN rail, it's easily released from the vertical guides of the frame. And just as easily, it can be put back in place.✅ The DIN rail is installed on yellow thermoplastic insulators.
They're placed between the metal everywhere. And even if there are any leaks on the horizontal rail in the cabinet, the voltage won't pass through to the entire frame and the entire interior of the enclosure.
No special tools are required.
✅ It's possible to install industrial-type automatic switches, controllers, and deep equipment.
To do this, the DIN rail is removed from the yellow insulator holder.
The insulator holders are released from the frame by hand.
You can see the height of the insulator in the center on the photo.
Mounting bracket for standard DIN railOne thing that's really handy is that if your device has a DIN rail mount, you can just clip it onto the rail and screw it into place.
xa0
But if you're working with a bigger device, like a industrial switch or a similar-sized unit, you might need to get a little more creative.
For example, you can buy a 150mm perforated plate (part number 401853) that's specifically designed for XL3 125 cabinets.
(Or, if you're feeling handy, you can make one yourself)
This gives you a solid base to attach your device to, and you can screw it into place.
xa0
Now, if your device is a bit too tall to fit in the standard DIN rail slot, you've got a few options.
For instance, you can just cut the existing front panel to size, or you can get a solid front panel for 18 modules (part number 401855) that's designed specifically for XL3 125 cabinets.
This gives you a clean, professional-looking finish, and you can easily cut a hole for your device or hide it inside if you prefer.
xa0
As for the cables, you'll get a set of isolated busbars (N+PE) in the box.
This includes a shunt holder, a single N+PE busbar with 35 connections, and a pack of 5 zero-shunt busbars with 8 connections each.
Shunt holderN+PE busbar with 35 connections5 x zero-shunt busbars with 8 connections each
I've found that the tire holder can be installed either at the top or bottom of the panel. If you need to install two tire holders, you'll have to buy the extra one separately.
The tires themselves can be installed by various manufacturers into the holder. However, when it comes to insulation, you've got at least 4-5 brands to choose from, or you can opt for Legrand's insulation.
xa0
✓ The bonus features of the complete cabinet assembly.
It's really convenient to organize cable routing inside the cabinet using the built-in cable management features of the cabinet itself.
At the bottom and top of the cable trays, there's a group of factory-installed hooks for installing cable ties.
Cable organizer attachment format on the holder-insulator Additionally, you get 4-5 cable ring organizers that can be installed on the yellow insulator holders along the left or right side channel in the cable tray.
Cable tied with a black cable tie on the factory holder in the cable trayxa0
After connecting the lines, we double-check that everything is connected correctly.
xa0
After adding the markers, I signed each wire according to the plan. I also used adhesive markers and printed labels from my cable printer.
xa0
Next, I closed the front panel with the door.
xa0
✅ The door can be unscrewed and removed if needed. It's held in place by two plastic screws. The door is easy to flip to the other side.
xa0
✅ If I need access to a specific row, the case allows me to remove just the front panel of that row or two rows without taking off the front door.
xa0
I can use either a 20-ruble coin or a Phillips 2 screwdriver to remove the screws.xa0
xa0
At this stage, I haven't received the smart control panel yet, so I've closed the bottom row with a cover from another panel. Once I've installed the remaining modules, I'll trim the cover to size or remove it altogether when working on all the modules on the rail.
xa0
xa0
I have to say, the panel assembly and deployment were a breeze. All the wires were neatly tucked away. While the repair work was ongoing, I left the front panel's protective film intact – it adds a nice touch to the overall design.
🔶️ MY OVERALL IMPRESSION
I was really impressed with the panel itself. Working with it is a pleasure – it's incredibly user-friendly, with lots of thoughtful details and nuances. You can easily connect up to 40-45 input lines from the top and bottom of the panel.
The additional accessories allow you to route mechanisms to the sides, bottom, or top of the panel, making it easy to integrate them into the main enclosure. For example, you can add 3-pin 220V sockets or two 2-pin sockets for flat plugs. You can also route network connections like RJ-45 or USB charging ports.
It's great that you can connect devices like a vacuum cleaner for cleaning the area without having to open the panel. You can also use an extension cord for repairs or assembling furniture.
All the interface outputs, like Ethernet ports, are necessary for firmware updates and controller programming – it's all about user-friendliness for this type of panel.
This series does have more serious metal-bodied panels for a professional level of build quality. The current panel, however, competes with the Schneider Electric Pragma series.
I've gotta say, both options have their pros and cons. It's tough to say which one is better or worse. But what I do know is that Pragma is made in Italy and France, and the latter has this really cool feature where you can adjust the lower two rails to increase the distance between the adjacent DIN rails, which is super handy for a bunch of large machines, electrical meters, and some control panel controllers.
I'd definitely recommend checking out the Legrand XL3 series for your next purchase.
xa0
🔷️ PROS
The design is sleek and the ergonomic layout is really well thought out.The assembly and mounting process is a breeze. The frame is top-notch, just like what you'd find in professional-grade panels. The removable and adjustable frame with easy-to-remove DIN rails is a game-changer.The details, like the perforated 'trays' for cutting and inserting cables, are super thoughtful. The cabinet depth is perfect for laying out lines and connections in a way that's easy to navigate. The sliding, perforated side panels for cable entry are a nice touch. The accessory bundle is massive. The plastron panels are removable for each DIN rail. The front door is removable and can be hung back up.The included N + PE bus is a nice bonus.⚠️CONS
The price has skyrocketed. You'll need to search for it from 2023-2024 or wait for a custom order.Right now, it's tough to get the optional components for the cabinet, and the lead time is pretty long.
