Huawei MatePad SE Tablet

I've had my Huawei MatePad SE for a few weeks now, and it's been a game-changer for my daily routine. The design is sleek and modern, and the performance is seriously impressive. Whether I'm binge-watching my favorite shows, getting some work done, or just browsing the web, this tablet can keep up. The high-resolution display is a real treat - it's so clear and vibrant. Plus, the battery life is longer than I expected, which is a big plus. I've been able to switch between tasks seamlessly, from checking email to editing documents, and it's been a huge time-saver. If you're in the market for a new tablet, I'd definitely recommend checking out the Huawei MatePad SE.

A Major Disappointment: My Experience with the Huawei MatePad SE

summarizeEditor's Summary

I recently bought the Huawei MatePad SE, hoping for a tablet with a SIM card slot that'd let me make calls. Unfortunately, this device fell short in several key areas. For the price, I expected a seamless user experience, but what I got was a frustrating mix of slow performance, limited app selection, and annoying ads. Here's my honest take on this tablet.

I chose the Huawei MatePad SE specifically because it had a SIM card slot, which I needed for making calls. Not all tablets have this feature, and I didn't want one that was limited to just watching movies or listening to music.
The salesperson in the store showed me models with SIM card slots, and I ended up buying this one.

I wasn't able to thoroughly check the tablet in the store, as the salesperson told me I'd need to register it under a user account and set a password first. Only then could I start using it. I asked if I could return it if I didn't like it, and he said I could, but only after a technical inspection, which would require sending the tablet back. Okay, I figured it was worth the risk, since I really needed the tablet.
The tablet came in a sturdy box, and everything looked good.

Huawei MatePad SE - Buy, Pricexa0
HUAWEI MatePad SE - a convenient tablet with a large screen, powerful processor, long battery life, and thoughtful ergonomics. The device supports SIM card installation.

The box included a charger, headphones, and a stylus.

I have to say, the slate itself in this grey color is a nice touch, really nice shade.
Huawei MatePad SE reviews
One thing I noticed is that the screen lets you choose from a few preloaded wallpapers, but the selection is pretty limited.
Huawei MatePad SE price, buy
I ended up getting a case for it from WB, and it's made a huge difference in terms of usability - I can even stand it up on a stand and watch videos or movies, it's really convenient.
Huawei MatePad SE
The design of this tablet is pretty sleek and minimalist, it's got a metal body, but it's a bit on the heavy side, especially when you're carrying it around in a bag. But to be honest, I don't really use it on the go that much, it's more of a home device for me.
Screen diagonal: 11 inches
Screen resolution: 1920 x 1200
Operating system: HarmonyOS 2
Number of cores: 8
Main camera resolution: 8 MP
Internal storage capacity: 128 GB
RAM capacity: 4 GB
Memory card slot: No
Cellular network standards: GSM, 2G, 3G, 4G LTE, VoLTE
Ability to work as a phone: Yes
Battery capacity: 7700 mAh
The menu system is pretty standard, just like on any Android smartphone.
I was excited to start using the tablet, but I quickly realized that I'd have to install some apps myself, depending on what I needed. But where's Google Play? Instead, I got App gallery as a replacement. And let me tell you, I'm not a fan of App gallery at all - every time I try to install something, I get bombarded with ads and can't even get into the app gallery properly.
It's always ads and it redirects me to other services. It's like it's trying to drive me crazy!

Watching movies and shows, the sound is pretty bad - no bass whatsoever. But the picture and color quality are actually pretty good.

image quality Huawei MatePad SExa0
But video calls are a different story - the color quality is just awful, like a cheap smartphone. And the front camera is only 5MP, which means selfies and video calls are basically unusable.
xa0
Warning: video calls
xa0
This is the biggest issue I have. I installed a SIM card, registered a new phone number, and tried to make WhatsApp calls. But the calls just aren't coming through! I've tried leaving the SIM card out, thinking maybe it was blocking the signal, but nothing works. I have to call the person first and tell them to open the tablet and WhatsApp, or else the call won't go through.
xa0
It's just ridiculous. I'll never buy anything from this manufacturer again and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
I'd only recommend this tablet if you're looking to watch movies, read books, or just browse the internet.
The Good
✔️ It's got a stylish design
✔️ Perfect for watching movies and videos
The Bad
- Installing apps is a nightmare
- You'll get constant software updates
- The front-facing camera is absolutely terrible
- Video calls through apps are a total disaster
