Tefal Good Value Electric Kettle KI150D30

I've had this Tefal Good Value Electric Kettle for a while now, and it's been a game-changer in my kitchen. The compact design is perfect for small kitchens, and the 1.5-liter capacity is plenty for most households. What really impresses me, though, is the build quality - it's seriously durable and easy to clean. I've had no issues with it, and I'm confident it'll last for years to come. The kettle's also really quiet when it's boiling water, which is a nice bonus.

A Kettle That Started Strong But Fizzled Out

summarizeEditor's Summary

We're huge fans of electric kettles, but we've had our fair share of issues with leaks due to the water level indicator strip. So, when we got this one from our relatives, we were excited to see if it'd solve our problem. The kettle looks nice from the outside, with a stainless steel body and hidden heating element. However, the real test was how it'd perform in the long run. After a week of use, we noticed some issues that made us question its durability. For one, the auto-shutoff feature didn't always work as expected, which was a major concern. We also found the kettle gets ridiculously hot when in use, so be careful not to burn yourself. The removable lid can be a bit tricky to take off and put back on, and the packaging was confusing, with repeated info that didn't add any value. On the plus side, the 360-degree rotation is super convenient, and the built-in filter is a great feature for those who want extra cleanliness. The stainless steel body is durable and resistant to scratches, and the hidden heating element is a clever design that keeps the kettle looking sleek.

We're huge fans of electric kettles in our household - they've been a total lifesaver since we moved to a place without gas. The problem is, we've gone through three kettles in the past four years, and the main issue was always the same: they'd start leaking due to the water level indicator strip. So, we set out to find a kettle without one, and that's how we ended up with this one our relatives gifted to us, knowing our problem.
It looks pretty nice from the outside, if I do say so myself. The kettle's made of stainless steel with a hidden heating element, which is a clever design.
The 1.7-liter capacity is decent, and the kettle itself weighs 900 grams. The 70-cm power cord is a good length, and it comes with small clips to wrap it around the base. The packaging was a bit confusing, with the same info repeated multiple times - not sure why they did that.
Let's take a closer look at each feature:
Versatility on the base (360° rotation)This is a pretty standard feature in most kettles, but I like it because it lets me move the power button away from my kids. Whether it's a crucial feature is debatable, though.
Removable limescale filter
This is super convenient - you can remove and clean the filter without washing the entire kettle. Not all kettles have this feature, which is a nice bonus.
Automatic shut-off
This one's a no-brainer - the kettle turns off when the water's fully boiled. I've never seen a kettle without this feature, and it's a total must-have. By the way, this kettle boils water in 4 minutes and 25 seconds. The manufacturer should've mentioned that in the packaging. Important: This feature doesn't work if there's less water than indicated inside the kettle.
I'm still not sure what the purpose of those red indicators with numbers is, but if I fill the kettle to the topmost mark, it doesn't turn off. Maybe that's a feature?
It's a breeze to clean.
I've found that the kettle is super easy to wipe down with a soft, damp cloth and a gentle cleaning solution. No fuss, no muss.
The removable lid.
For me, this feature is more of a hassle than a help. I just fill the kettle with water and always remove the lid. When I put it back on, it doesn't always close properly, which means the kettle won't turn off, even when the water's fully boiling. That's a bit of a pain.
The lid doesn't fit perfectlyUltra-polished heating element.
The idea behind this feature is to prevent limescale buildup, keeping the heating element clean. In practice, I've found that it doesn't quite work as advertised. I fill the kettle from the tap, and over time, the bottom of the kettle develops a ring of limescale. Here's what it looks like when it's clean:
And here's what it looks like after two weeks of use:
It seems like limescale is still a problem, even with this feature. Maybe it's the water quality?I was surprised to find that the manufacturer didn't mention this feature on the packaging. The ergonomic handle is a nice touch - when you pick up the kettle, your thumb fits nicely into the recessed area.
After six months of use, some of the issues I mentioned earlier became apparent. The kettle's build quality started to show its weaknesses, and I began to notice some leaks.
Fast forward to almost seven years later, and I'm updating my review. Officially, I can say that the kettle has paid for itself and then some. Unfortunately, it's finally given up the ghost: water started boiling through the lid, spewing out everywhere. Apparently, it might be possible to fix it, but is it worth it, considering it's had a good run?
One thing I loved about this product is how easy it is to use. I mean, I'm not exactly tech-savvy, but I was able to figure it out in no time. The interface is super intuitive, and the instructions that come with it are clear and concise. I was able to get started right away, which is a big plus in my book.
