My Chinese Instant Rice Bowl Experiment: Convenience Meets Confusion

summarizeEditor's Summary

I recently stumbled upon a Chinese instant rice bowl kit at Perekrestok, and I'm still trying to wrap my head around it. The product comes in a foil packet with a zipper lock and a cute design featuring a friendly kitty peering out from a cup of rice. The packaging is entirely in Chinese, which adds to the mystery. The ingredient list is quite extensive, with a mix of familiar and unknown components. I was excited to try it out, but things didn't quite live up to my expectations. The microwave instructions were easy to follow, and the product was ready in just a few minutes. However, the flavor was a total letdown - it tasted more like a chemistry experiment than a real meal. The sauce was way too sweet and overpowering, which made it hard to enjoy the dish. I was also expecting a more substantial amount of chicken, but it's basically just a few tiny pieces. The product has a weird, synthetic aftertaste that lingers long after you're done eating. Overall, I'm not impressed with this product, but I do appreciate the convenience it offers.

My Chinese Instant Rice Bowl Experiment: Convenience Meets Confusion
I recently stumbled upon a Chinese instant rice bowl kit at Perekrestok, and I'm still trying to wrap my head around it.
The product comes in a foil packet with a zipper lock and a cute design featuring a friendly kitty peering out from a cup of rice. The packaging is entirely in Chinese, which adds to the mystery.
The back of the packet has information in Russian, which is a nice touch, considering I don't need to translate it.
The ingredient list is quite extensive, with a mix of familiar and unknown components. It's like a chemistry lesson in a nutshell!
Ingredients:
Semi-cooked riceDicalcium phosphateMono- and diglyceridesCalcium phosphateWith sauce:Soybean oilThick soy sauceCaramel colorGarlicSugarSaltGlutamateSoy proteinChickenSpicesFood additives (5\'-dinatrievye nucleotides, D-erythorbate sodium, sorbic acid, lowin)Food flavoringsWith dried vegetables:Dried carrotsDried cabbageDried wakame seaweedI'm not even sure what half of these ingredients are, but I'm curious to see what the Chinese have come up with. After trying a few of their products, I'm no longer intimidated by their packaging.

It's bound to be filling.
And that's just the rice!
The convenience of this product is unbeatable. The zip-lock seal is perfect for keeping everything fresh, and the little zippers on the side make it easy to open and close.
Inside the box, I found three packets and a fork. The fork is a bit flimsy, but it's better than the ones they sometimes include with instant noodles.
I was thinking I'd have to pour everything out of the packets, but nope - the Chinese designers thought of that too. You can actually cook the rice right in the packet!
Just pour in the water up to the line, and you're good to go. It's so convenient - no need to wash any extra dishes at the office, and you don't have to rummage around for a pot to cook it in.
Just pour the rice into the packet, and then add the veggie packet. Close the zip-lock, and let it cook for 10 minutes.
After 10 minutes, add the sauce and give it a stir.
And that's it - your instant rice bowl is ready!
Of course, I poured it into a proper bowl at home, but the convenience of this product is unbeatable.
~⭐️Taste⭐️~
So, what did I just eat?
I have no idea what kind of rice this is or what they did to it, but it cooks super fast to a ready-to-eat consistency. It's like overcooked noodles. The taste is synthetic. Honestly, the rice itself is weird. In the sauce, there are little chunks of mushroom. And the thing I was hoping to find - chicken flavor? Nope, not here. But there's a strong taste of spices, paprika, and some unknown chemicals listed in the ingredients. It's honestly hard to describe the taste.
It feels like eating synthetic rice with a chemical sauce. The only natural thing in there is dried carrot.
But that's not quite right...
I think I need to try it again to get a better sense of what's going on. Maybe I just got a bad batch?
Overall, I'm still trying to wrap my head around this product. It's convenient, but the taste is a bit of a mystery. I'll have to try it again to see if I can get a better sense of what's going on.
