My Take on the YooMoney Plastic Card: Is It Worth It?

summarizeEditor's Summary

I was skeptical about YooMoney at first, but after using the plastic card for a while, I've got some honest thoughts to share. The card itself feels solid, and the battery life is way better than I expected. The real game-changer, though, is the instant cashback in points – it's a total game-changer for managing your finances. But, let's get real, there are some downsides to consider, like the commission fees when transferring money. I've been using the card for a few weeks now, and I've gotta say, it's been a decent option for managing my money. The build quality is surprisingly good, and the app is easy to navigate. I've also been earning a bunch of points just by paying with my YooMoney card, which is a nice bonus. However, there are some things that might give you pause – like the commission fees, the fact that you've got to pay for the card itself, and the minimum withdrawal limit. Overall, it's not perfect, but it's been working for me, and I think it might be worth a shot for you too.

Hello everyone!
I had to get myself a YooMoney wallet at the end of 2023 when issues with withdrawing funds from Irecommend on Qiwi started popping up. It was a necessary measure, as I didn't have any other options. Back then, I was skeptical about this project, despite the organizers reassuring me that YooMoney was a game-changer for managing your finances. You can open a wallet, get a free virtual card, or order a plastic one, make transfers, and more. Plus, you can pay with your YooMoney wallet or card for goods and services, get instant cashback in points, and spend them with our partners.
Pay with your YooMoney wallet or card for goods and services, get instant cashback in points, and spend them with our partners.
For me, electronic money was a new concept, and I had no idea how to use it. I preferred cash and lost a lot of money in the process. Just think about it: to get cash, I had to transfer money from my YooMoney wallet to my card, and then withdraw it from an ATM. When I transferred 1000 rubles, I had to pay 1075 rubles from my wallet, which is 7.5%.
Transferring money to another bank's cardFor a meager reward on Irecommend, this amount is significant. I didn't have any other options. Before, the online payment service was called Yandex Money. Over the course of more than a year of using it, I encountered many problems and lost a lot of money I had earned with so much effort.
I've gotten pretty comfortable using electronic payments with my Yandex Money wallet, and I've stopped wasting my hard-earned cash on unnecessary fees. This was largely thanks to a few products offered by the service.
I wanted to share my thoughts on one of them in particular: the Yandex Money plastic card.
Fortunately, I didn't encounter any difficulties with the process of ordering the card.
How to Order a Yandex Money Plastic Card
I simply navigated to my Yandex Money wallet page and clicked the 'Order Card' icon.
Ordering a Yandex Money plastic cardNext, I had to fill out a short questionnaire, providing my country and city of residence,
Ordering a Yandex Money plastic cardmy delivery address with postal code,
Ordering a Yandex Money plastic cardand the name to be displayed on the card.
Ordering a Yandex Money plastic cardAfter double-checking the accuracy of my input, I clicked the 'Confirm, proceed to payment' icon.
Ordering a YuMoney plastic cardI was charged 299 rubles from my wallet, which covers not only the card's production and shipping but also its maintenance for 5 years. That's not a bad deal, considering the services included.
On my YuMoney wallet's main page, I immediately saw that my card order had been accepted.
Ordering a YuMoney plastic cardThe estimated delivery time was also displayed, and I could track the package's progress using the Russian Post tracking number.
A week later, my card was ready. I received it in a neat envelope with instructions and colorful illustrations.
Envelope with the YuMoney plastic card
Envelope with the YuMoney plastic cardThe YuMoney plastic card's design
I was pleasantly surprised by the card's design. It's a sleek black card with the card name and payment system logo on the front, along with a visible chip.
YuMoney Plastic CardOn the back, I found the card number, expiration date, CVV code, and other important details.
YuMoney Plastic CardNext up was
Activating my YuMoney plastic card.
I simply clicked on the "Activate card" link right next to the order tracking info on my account page.
Activating the CardIn the pop-up window, I entered the card number.
Activating the CardThen, I entered the code sent to me via SMS.
Activating the CardFinally, I came up with a PIN code for my card.
Activating the CardActivating the card took me just a few seconds.
After that, my account page showed a bunch of reminders about the card's features.
Card ActivationCard ActivationCard ActivationCard ActivationWhat's more, it will also show up on the main page of my Yandex Money wallet.Card ActivationI could also check all the necessary card details there: number, CVV code, expiration date, and name.
Card DetailsThat's all I needed to make an online payment with this card.
I could also set up card settings on this page.
Card SettingsAnd, of course, I could check all the fees for cash withdrawals and transfers.
Tariffs Now I want to share my rich experience using
this card, from the moment I topped it up to the moment I paid it off.
How to top up a YuMoney card?
Aside from the rewards I got from Irecommend, I also topped it up using other methods.
One of them was
Bank transfer to YuMoney's account details
I mentioned this method earlier in my review. The funds came in from Irecommend.
No need to repeat myself.
The second most popular method for me was
via Sberbank's SberPay
To do this, I logged into my Sberbank online account and found the transfer option via SberPay.
I clicked on 'Transfer to another bank.'
Topping up a YuMoney card via SberPayNext, I entered my phone number,
Topping up a YuMoney card via SberPaythe recipient bank 'YuMoney', and the transfer amount.
Topping up a YuMoney card via SberPayAfter that, I just had to confirm the payment.
Loading card via SberbankI've finally sent the payment over.
Loading card via SberbankI also reloaded my Yandex Money card
using an ATM.
It's pretty straightforward. Since my card has contactless scanning, I just held it up to the corresponding symbol on the ATM.
Using a Yandex Money cardNext, I entered the code, chose 'reload,' and inserted cash into the ATM's deposit slot. The money was then credited to my card balance, with no commission fees applied. You could also reload from your mobile phone balance
or via SberPay
or other cards
but I didn't use those methods.
Card reload optionsIt's way more fun to spend money than to top up your wallet.
How do you make online payments with a Yandex Money card?
I'll show you on the example of my last Wildberries purchase.
I browsed for the item I liked and added it to my cart.
Making a purchase onlineI navigated to the shopping cart and started the checkout process.
Making a purchase onlineIn the top right corner, I clicked the "edit payment" icon.
Making a purchase onlineI chose my YuMoney card, which I had previously linked to my Wildberries account.
Making a purchase onlineAfter verifying that the correct card was displayed as the payment method, I completed the order.
Making a purchase onlineAs you can see, it's a breeze. Here's what my last purchase looked like on my Wildberries account.
My purchase made through WildberriesNo commission was charged in the process.
The only downside was that I lost 2% off the discount on this platform when I paid with this card, which would've been applied if I paid with my WB card. But no big deal, the result was what mattered.
Offline payment with YuMoney card
It was no different from paying with other plastic cards.
All I needed was a standard payment terminal.
Payment terminalTo pay, I just had to hold the card up to the terminal and that was it.
Using the YuMoney cardThe amount deducted from my card was displayed on the terminal, and the commission wasn't withheld either.
Since my YuMoney card doesn't have SMS notifications, I had to
keep an eye on its balance.
If there was an ATM nearby, I'd do it through that. All I had to do was hold the card up to the contactless reader,
Using my YuMoney card I'd usually just log in to my YuMoney account online and check my balance, but I was curious to see how the card worked. Using my YuMoney card To check my balance, I just entered the code and selected 'Check balance' - just like at an ATM, my account balance was displayed right away. There was no commission for this transaction, which was a nice surprise. I only used this method as a last resort, though.
Checking my account balance It's way easier than finding an ATM, that's for sure. Withdrawing cash from my YuMoney card
Using my YuMoney card I never actually withdrew cash using my YuMoney card, and it's not because the process is complicated - it's just that the 3% commission seemed way too steep to me. I did appreciate the rewards points I earned for making purchases, though. When I used my card actively, I was able to rack up a decent amount of points.
Rewards EarnedUsing this card earns me rewards.
Those rewards are pretty cool.
1 reward point is worth 1 ruble.
I love redeeming those points.
Redeeming RewardsI've been redeeming them for a while now.
Each month, I also get to choose
Cashback Optiona cashback reward for using the card.
CashbackI don't have time to research all the partners with high cashback rates, but there are plenty. I also registered for a YuMoney card on the Privet Mir website to earn extra rewards for using this card.
The YuMoney card can be used in
YuMoney Pay for mobile payments in one tap.
YooMoney Pay To set this up, you just need to download the YooMoney app, log in, and head to the "Cards" section. Then, tap on YooMoney Pay. YooMoney Pay From there, the card gets added and you can set it up step by step, following the on-screen instructions. I'm still using another contactless payment system, which I'll link to at the end of this review, and I haven't installed the YooMoney app yet. However, it's definitely on my to-do list for the future.
That's all I wanted to share about my experience with the YooMoney card.
If I had to summarize, I'd say the card has the following benefits:
The ability to top up from various sources without any fees; Fee-free payments in offline and online stores; Rewards points and cashback; Easy card setup and activation; The option to withdraw cash from ATMs; The ability to connect to YooMoney Pay. However, it's not all sunshine and rainbows when using this card. It also has its downsides:
Drawbacks:
There's a fee for manufacturing and maintenance; There's a commission for withdrawing cash from ATMs;Limits on cash withdrawals.I think the Yandex Money plastic card deserves to be used all the time. It has all the properties of cards that allow you to make both online and offline payments, and most importantly, save me money from Irecommend.
I recommend you take a closer look at this card.
