My Shocking Run-In with Alfa Bank's Sneaky Debt Traps

summarizeEditor's Summary

I'm sharing my shocking experience with Alfa Bank's debt traps. I thought their conditions were great, but I ended up paying over 10,000 rubles in penalties. My story's a warning sign for anyone considering using their services. I'll break down what happened and why you should be cautious. From unexpected fee hikes to hidden charges, I'll give you the lowdown on why I'm not a fan of Alfa Bank's practices. I applied for a debit card and savings account in January, thinking their conditions were great. But things took a turn when I was offered a credit card, which I opened to top up my savings account and multiply my capital. I was able to pay off the debt early and avoid further penalties, but the experience left a bad taste in my mouth. I'm sharing my story to help others avoid getting caught in Alfa Bank's debt traps.

Hello everyone!
I'm sharing this because it's a warning sign that everyone should know about: how Alfa Bank tricks its customers into debt.
I've been pretty strict about not using credit cards for over 15 years and try to avoid taking consumer loans. But in January this year, I broke my principles and it cost me over 10,000 rubles.
The funniest part of this story is that I easily got out of it because I discovered the penalty charge on time. But the craziest thing is that I was convinced my grace period wouldn't end soon. Deciding to pay off the debt early and make a payment, I discovered the penalty charge. What's the point of that?
So, let's get to the point. In January this year, I became an Alfa Bank customer and applied for a debit card, as well as opened a savings account because the conditions seemed interesting at the time.
To make things perfect, the bank office offered me to connect a credit card to my debit card. I opened it not to splurge on my whims but to top up my savings account and multiply my capital.
I agreed, and I later regretted it.
The total damage is around 10,000 roubles.
4,900 roubles were the penalty charge, and the rest was a monthly fee for paid services without my consent for 8 months. It wasn't noticeable each month.
Without my knowledge or consent, a life insurance and some strange notification service were added to my card.
Attention!
Life insurance costs 600.02 roubles.
Notification service - 147.11 roubles.
Pay attention to these decimal points. This is a sneaky trick by the bank to get you into debt.
On July 4th of this year, I withdrew 40,000 roubles from my credit card. I had 60 days to use these funds without any risks or penalties.
But on August 8th, I closed the debt entirely ahead of schedule. In my personal account, everything seemed fine. The necessary amount was on my account. I waited a day for the grace period to update, and then I withdrew the same amount. I had 60 days to repay the debt, and I'd definitely do it sooner and live happily ever after. Well, not quite...
I wasn't prepared for this. September 5th, I log into my account to pay off my credit card debt early. And then I see a penalty charge of 5500 rubles. What's going on?
I call the bank to find out what's happening.
The operators are confused about the details, and the first one tells me it's because the money wasn't on my account for a sufficient amount of time (24 hours) for the interest-free period to be updated.
I check the transaction history, and it turns out that the amount was actually withdrawn again after 24 hours.
It also turns out that 600.02 rubles were charged for life insurance, which I had never heard of before. I was furious and the operator immediately cancelled the service and refunded the last withdrawal.
penalty charge and topping upI reach out to the bank's chat for clarification. I get the following response: that when I closed my credit card account, there was a shortage of 0.02 rubles, so the interest-free period wasn't updated.
conversation with the bankI'm extremely careful with my credit card, knowing the bank's policies. I definitely wouldn't have left 39,999.98 rubles on my credit card.
The bank is really taking advantage of me!
As you can guess, the 0.02 ruble debt was organized for life insurance, a paid service I didn't even connect. And what's worse, I didn't even see the 0.02 ruble debt.
So, they cancelled all the paid services and refunded 600.02 rubles for the life insurance.
But I still had a debt of 4,900 rubles for 4 days of late payment, 4 days that the bank artificially created.
What's good in this situation is that I caught it in time. I paid the fine the same day and closed my credit card account. If I had decided to top up my card 25 days later, the amount would have been around 60,000 rubles. That's what they're counting on.
My mom checked my credit card statement after the incident. She found out that money was being quietly deducted from my credit card in the amount of 147.11 for a mysterious notification and an artificially created debt.
in the trashI'm blown away by the bank's 'creativity.' The issue isn't the laughable debt of 0.02 rubles, which is why the interest-free period wasn't updated, but the fact that after paying off the debt for the last time, the account showed a round sum, not 39,999.98 rubles.
Alfa Bank doesn't deserve trust; they use 'dirty' tactics. I'm no longer a client of this bank.
I transferred my money from the Alfa Bank savings account to another one.I canceled my credit card.I won't be using my debit card either.Alfa Bank's policy is, to put it mildly, not pleasant. They lure you in with purchases of paid reviews, a fee for recommending friends, and so on. Be careful, they're trying to deceive you.
How Alfa-Bank makes money from scams:
Stealthy addition of multiple paid services: The bank adds paid services without clear notification to the client. For example, life insurance, SMS notifications, or service packages.Artificially creating a delay: Delays of 0.02 rubles aren't displayed in the personal account.Unavailability of contact information: It's impossible to quickly contact the bank to resolve disputed issues.Increasing the credit card limit without my consent, approving loans without my request, and using my property as collateral.Recommendations for consumers:
* Be super careful with contracts: Always read the fine print, especially the tiny print at the bottom.
* Keep an eye on your statements: Regularly check your statements to catch any sneaky charges.
* Check your services: Periodically review the list of services you're paying for to avoid unwanted extras.
* Don't be afraid to speak up: If you think your bank has wronged you, don't hesitate to stand up for yourself.
* Contact Rospotrebnadzor: If you're still having issues, reach out to Rospotrebnadzor to protect your consumer rights.
I'm done with Alpha-Bank, and I'm swearing off credit altogether. Hopefully, my review will help you be more vigilant and avoid similar headaches. If you don't catch the scam in time, you could end up losing a ton of money.
Take care of yourself and your loved ones!
