Our Big Disappointment with Tick-Borne Encephalitis Insurance: Not Worth the Money

summarizeEditor's Summary

I'm still fuming about our experience with this tick-borne encephalitis insurance company. We paid 190 rubles for a policy that felt like a total waste of money. The process of getting insured as a whole family was a nightmare, especially with ten policies to manage. We were expecting a lot more from this insurance, but what we got was a bunch of useless documents and a bunch of hassle. The policy document is basically just a piece of paper with some info on it, and the booklet with addresses is just a list of addresses. We're left feeling like we got ripped off.

I'm still fuming about our experience with this insurance company. We're a family that takes insurance seriously, so when my husband's workplace offered us tick-borne encephalitis insurance, we jumped at the chance. The price was a major factor, though - 190 rubles is steep, especially considering what you get in return. It's basically just a policy document with a tiny sticker attached and a little booklet with a list of addresses.
We got insured as a whole family, which was a bit of a hassle. There are five of us, plus my husband's parents, my parents, and his niece - that's ten insurance policies in total. But hey, at least we were covered, right?
The back is blank I have to say, the little booklet that comes with the policy is actually pretty handy. It's got addresses for all sorts of cities and even lists all the pickup points with their working hours.
We used it all summer without any issues, but then disaster struck. I was brushing off my kids' clothes when I brushed off not one, not two, but three ticks. Luckily, we were all insured, so I wasn't too stressed out.
But then, on August 30th, I spotted a tick on my kid's hair while brushing it. I freaked out, of course. I called my husband over, and he confirmed it was a tick. When I shone my phone's flashlight on it, it started moving its legs...
I went into full-on panic mode. I quickly got the kids dressed, grabbed their documents, and called my mom to come over. My husband tried to calm me down, but I was having none of it. I even thought about buying a tick-removal tool, but I'm not sure I would've used it even if I had it.
We took the kids and the insurance documents to the hospital, where the doctors had a hard time finding the tick. I had taken a photo to show them where it was. They told us it had been there for at least two days, but fortunately, it hadn't bitten us deeply.
I took my kid to the hospital, and they told us to bring the tick wrapped in two layers of gauze. They also told us to take it for further examination if we wanted to, since it costs 1300 rubles. When it came to insurance, they said it didn't cover tick analysis or administering immunoglobulin - the most important thing, and that's why we needed insurance in the first place.
They still gave us the immunoglobulin because my kid is a minor. We're not even 5 years old yet. In the hospital, they immediately removed the tick, then gave us the immunoglobulin, and finally checked our insurance. They told us that kids under a certain age get immunoglobulin for free.
We did end up getting the tick analyzed, of course. We submitted it on Friday, and the results came in via SMS on Monday after 16 hours. Everything was negative, which was a huge relief!
The doctors strongly recommended that we get our kids vaccinated, since you can only get immunoglobulin twice in your lifetime. So, what do we have with this insurance? NOTHING! The doctors will still remove the tick for free. The tick analysis has to be paid for. And for kids, immunoglobulin is free, but for adults, you'll have to shell out the cash. I guess I'll have to take out a loan for myself if it bites me, since it's based on weight or something. At least, they weighed my niece before giving her the immunoglobulin.
I don't recommend this insurance to anyone. If you want to pay for a piece of paper, go ahead and sign up with this insurance. But if you don't want to waste your money, look for a different one. We'll definitely be switching to a different one next year.
We spent ages trying to figure out what's actually covered by this insurance, but all we found was a bunch of fine print. Thanks for reading my review!
