Junior Debit CardI've come to realize that a debit card is a must-have for kids these days.
Cash is becoming less relevant, and a kid's debit card comes with a whole lot of functionality.
One of the main reasons I got my kid a debit card was for the convenience of making payments at the same school cafeteria.
It's also super helpful to be able to track their expenses for me.
And let's not forget about the ease of top-ups to their account.
But what really sold me on it was the first-hand experience of managing their own finances for the kid.
After some thought, I decided to get my kid a personal debit card.
Since I'm already familiar with various bank cards, I started searching among the options available on my phone.
After researching all the features, I settled on the Junior Debit Card from T-bank (formerly Tinkoff Bank).
Maybe there's a better option out there, but I relied on the features that made sense to me, which were:
Card details from the appThe ability to install the app directly on your kid's phone (so they can see their account balance, expenses, and transactions) was a game-changer for me.
What's more, the app on my phone also shows the kid's card, allowing me to stay on top of things at all times.
The kid's card is linked to their number, not mine.
Steps to independenceThis is a plus, as my kid can now make transactions directly on their phone number, so I don't need to act as a middleman like I did with my VTB bank account when my kid was younger (I had a brief experience with a kid's debit card).
Envelope for deliveryWorking with T-bank was totally transparent.
I sent my kid a QR code or link invitation (they got to choose), and they were able to set up the app on their phone in no time.
What's more, T-bank has a loyalty program for kids. They earn points, accumulate savings, and offer a 'piggy bank' program where kids can save a set amount each month and build up a nice sum over time.
The card itselfOrdering and delivery were lightning-fast, no fuss.
In some banks, ordering a supplementary card would require you to visit the office, fill out a form, wait for the card to be issued, and then visit the same branch again with all the necessary documents. That could take a week or more, and you'd still have to deal with the hassle of going to the bank. No wonder adults are always so busy!
Child-friendly descriptionT-bank streamlined this process.
I ordered the card for my kid directly through the app, no need to deal with customer support.
I was blown away by how quickly they delivered it to my doorstep - just a day after I placed the order, and I live outside the city!
The bank representative was super friendly and went over all the logistics with me, handing over the card in no time.
Getting the card was a breeze - it only took 5 minutes.
All I needed to provide was my passport.
The Junior card falls under the MIR category, which means it's accepted internationally, like when we visit Belarus.
Design optionsThe main reason we chose this bank for my son was the ability to pick his own design for the card.
From what I've found, only T-bank offers a wide range of design options for kids' bank cards.
My son was super excited to use my app to make his own choice.
Design optionsThe card is a real eye-catcher now!
And get this - the bank rep included a guide for kids in the envelope, with tips on saving and budgeting.
It also reminds kids that they can contact the bank directly through chat, without needing to bother their parents. A great step towards independence!
Design optionsMeanwhile, in my app, I was offered the option to set up location tracking for my son. By following a few simple steps, I can monitor his whereabouts and the last places he used the card through the app.
I think it's a good idea to include this feature, and I'll figure it out soon enough.
Design OptionsWe got some small standard gifts from the bank.
It's a sticker pack and this little business card thing.
Free StickersSo, we already have a few of these. My husband and I got the same ones when we ordered our cards.
But why not have another one, right?
Although I still prefer using my regular wallet where my cash and cards are together.
Business CardChild Card Management.
The bank doesn't charge us for maintenance and offers nice terms for using it.
You can see them on the screen with the card's usage conditions.
I didn't notice anything critical there, except maybe a commission for withdrawing large amounts from other ATMs, which my kid won't do in the first place.
Card Management, FeesSo, as of now, the T-bank Junior Card for my kid has been a hit with our whole family, and I can confidently recommend it.
