A Surprising Find in Goat Hair Yarn - Razgovskaya's Mixed Bag

summarizeEditor's Summary

I recently stumbled upon Razgovskaya's goat hair yarn, and the price was a major draw - 700 rubles for two spools. That's an incredible value for money, considering the quality of the yarn. Unfortunately, the quality didn't quite live up to my expectations. The build quality is lacking, and the yarn tends to shed quickly. I managed to create some decent-looking socks, but the process was a bit of a challenge. The yarn is soft to the touch, which is a plus for any knitting project, but it sheds quickly, which can be frustrating when working on a project. The color palette is pretty standard, but it's still a nice addition to any yarn collection. I appreciate the effort that went into creating a product that's accessible to crafters on a budget, but the quality of the yarn is subpar, which is a major letdown. Still, I think it's worth trying out if you're on a tight budget and don't mind a bit of a learning curve.

Hello everyone!
I recently stumbled upon this Russian goat hair yarn in spools, and I have to admit, the price was a major draw - just 700 rubles for two spools. That's an incredible value for goat hair yarn!
I'd never heard of the manufacturer before. They're a relatively new player in the market, but I decided to give them a try. I bought it from an online store.
The yarn is called Razgovskaya.
Here's what the spools look like:
Razgovskaya Goat Hair Yarn ReviewsI've been dreaming of making fluffy gloves with long fur for ages, but I decided to start with some socks instead.
Here's what I managed to create:
Razgovskaya Goat Hair Yarn ReviewsOne thing I noticed right off the bat was that there were no labels with recommended needle sizes or anything on the spools, so I had to experiment with different needles to find the right size.
Razgovskaya Goat Hair Yarn ReviewsThe yarn is wound onto the spools very tightly.
Each spool weighs 250 grams and contains 1500 meters of yarn. When I'm knitting, the spool doesn't come apart.
Razgovskaya Goat Hair Yarn ReviewsThe yarn consists of two separate threads that aren't twisted together. It's essentially two threads wound together.
Razgovskaya Goat Hair Yarn ReviewsEach thread is 1 mm thick. The yarn is surprisingly strong and doesn't break when I'm knitting.
Razgovskaya Goat Hair Yarn ReviewsI have to say, the sample I liked the most was the one I knitted on size 3 needles. The fabric turned out dense and exactly what I was going for. Using thicker needles resulted in a looser fabric.
I knitted in the round and found that the fabric curls to the right. This is a property I've never encountered in wool yarn before. Typically, it's cotton and other natural fibers that curl.
The edges are a bit uneven and don't lie flat.
Razgovskaya Goat Hair Yarn ReviewsThe twist is holding up, but not fantastically.
Razgovskaya Goat Hair Yarn ReviewsKnitting Experience
The yarn feels rough to the touch, a bit scratchy. It's okay on the needles, but it's not a pleasure to knit with. It quickly wears down my fingers.
Initially, I thought the coarseness and roughness were due to the factory treatment often applied to this type of yarn, especially down-filled ones. Usually, after the first wash, all the treatment is washed out, the yarn 'opens up', and the down becomes soft and fluffy, with the finished products developing a beautiful, luxurious pile.
Unfortunately, that didn't happen with Razgovskaya's goat down.
Razgovskaya Goat Hair Yarn ReviewsSome tiny, synthetic-looking fibers are poking out of the socks, but it's not like down at all. It feels rough and synthetic to the touch.
Razgovskaya Goat Hair Yarn ReviewsI have to say, the socks I made with this yarn turned out pretty rough and scratchy. You wouldn't want to wear them on bare feet, but they do keep your legs warm.
I ended up wearing the socks around the house in the evenings instead of slippers. I hand-washed them with shampoo and conditioner for hair, and they did get a bit softer.
However, the fleece never really came out of the fabric, and the socks started to develop some nasty pilling. Not exactly what I was hoping for.
Razgovskaya Goat Hair Yarn ReviewsI've worked with natural wool fleece before, and I know what to expect after washing: soft, fluffy, and just like an Orenburg shawl.
Based on my experience, I'd say this yarn is just regular, coarse wool that's only good for making socks. No sign of any fleece whatsoever.
After a month of use and several washes, the socks started to fall apart, lost their shape, and developed some serious pilling:
Razgovskaya Goat Hair Yarn ReviewsThe pilling is pretty big and stubborn.
Razgovskaya Goat Hair Yarn ReviewsWhat's weird is that the pilling isn't just limited to the soles of the socks - it's also showing up on the upper part, which barely gets any wear.
Razgovskaya Goat Hair Yarn ReviewsThe elastic also started to lose its shape and got pretty wide.
Razgovskaya Goat Hair Yarn ReviewsI was surprised by how well this yarn works up into warm, cozy socks. But let's be real, it's probably not the best choice for anything else. I mean, check out these sad, lumpy things I made with it:
Razgovskaya Goat Hair Yarn ReviewsI'm struggling to think of any other projects this yarn would be suitable for, besides maybe some warm winter socks for my husband or kids.
Rewardingly, the yarn consumption was pretty low - I used only 62 grams to make a pair of socks. That means I can get about 8 pairs out of two 500-gram skeins. In terms of cost, that's a great value, but aesthetically... not so much. Unless you're planning to wear them for a long time, like my husband does on fishing trips, or they're for kids who'll lose them anyway.
