I Finally Joined the Ranks of a Certified Vacuum Expert: Meet My Moody Vacuum, the Troublemaker of the Cleaning World
I've been begging my husband for a robot vacuum for five years now, and finally, he surprised me with it on our 15th wedding anniversary. Our conversation went something like this:
- What should I get you?
- A robot vacuum!
- Oh, come on, what's the point of that?
- I don't want anything else!
- Okay, so you want a robot vacuum?
- Yeah, that's it!
Fast forward six months, and I realized how much I needed a robot vacuum in our new place. I used to want it just for the novelty of it, but now I'm dealing with a whole different issue – dust and dirt everywhere. It's not just a little dust; it's a thick layer of it, especially after I clean the floors. It's like the dust and dirt are coming from nowhere, and it's really frustrating.
At first, I couldn't understand why our old place didn't have this problem. But then I realized it was because of the carpets. We had one room with carpeting, and another with a small rug, and I think that's where all the dust and dirt were accumulating.
Now that we've gotten rid of all the carpets, the dust and dirt are really getting to me. And we don't even have any pets!
And this isn't just me being dramatic; it's a legitimate reason why people might need a robot vacuum – no carpets!
I ordered this from the official dealer, here.
I chose the "IRobot Roomba 886" model with free delivery across Russia.
It's been over a year since I got this device, but I'm still discovering its capabilities. I'm writing this review because I might never use all its features, but I want to share my experience with you.
The packaging is huge and impressive.
I'm not exactly the type to read user manuals, so we just plugged it in and started using it.
But, of course, it wasn't that simple. I had to do some extra steps first – remove the packaging label, set the date and time, configure the docking station, and choose the language.
Remove the packaging labelSet the date and timeConfigure the docking stationChoose the languageAnd that's it? It works!
IRobot RoombaI have to admit, our new robot vacuum was a bit of a wild card at first. It spun around three times, checking out its surroundings, before making a beeline for the dirtiest room in the house - my son's teenage bedroom. After a whirlwind tour (we were all glued to the action, watching with our daughters), it lost some steam and took it easy on the other rooms before heading back to base. It was exhausted. That dirty room really drains the energy out of me!
Next morning, with fresh batteries, I sent the robot on its way. Where did it head first? You guessed it - straight back to that same room. Today's visit was a bit more successful than yesterday's, and it didn't linger long before moving on to explore the rest of the apartment.
The manual warns that the first few days might not be perfect, as the robot needs to get familiar with its surroundings. Fair enough, let it do its thing. Every nook and cranny.
First full clean, first stuffed trash can, first shock! We had a lot more trash than I thought!
And so the days went by... The robot got a name.
From iRobot to Robba to Robert to Robik to Bobik - that's our robot's journey. It's funny how it looks like a little dog, with that black nose of its. The girls think it's like a bloodhound sniffing out dirt.
It's incredibly easy to use. One big main button and four smaller ones. You can control it with just the main button. Press it once and it's on; press it again and it's off.
Secondary buttons and their functions
SPOT button - Spot cleaning mode (the robot cleans a small area around itself, about a meter in diameter, perfect for quick cleanups)
DOCK button - Send the robot to its docking station (works if the station is nearby, but if you press this button in another room, it'll weirdly and illogically make its way to the station)
SCHEDULE button - Scheduling feature (literally 'cleaning schedule')
CLOCK button - Set the time
Warranty
The product comes with a two-year warranty (one year from the manufacturer + one year from the website seller)
Roomba 886 package contents
Dimensions: 35 x 35 x 9 cm
The box with all the contents weighs 7 kg. The robot itself weighs 3.6 kg. Besides the robot, the package includes:
- A docking station (220V, plugs into the wall. Place it in a convenient spot, easily accessible for the robot)
- The virtual wall and two battery packs. Honestly, I don't need this at all - no stairs, no tight spaces, nothing like that. So, I can only understand how it works in theory.
- Three washable filters (we've never changed the filter in a year, just dry it and it's good as new)
The container for the trash is bigger than in previous models, it's easy to remove for cleaning, and the lid opens with a simple click (you can see the yellow stripes and arrow on the photo)
I usually clean the container after every cleaning, but I'm lazy, so I wait for the full indicator on the main panel (below the main button). When it's full - I empty it. It usually takes 2-3 cleanings. The only thing I need to do for the robot, but for this price, I expect it to be self-cleaning!
For convenience, there's a handle for carrying the robot
I don't use the scheduling feature because I'm home, and it's no trouble to press the button. But this robot has a bit of a personality - sometimes it's in the mood, and it goes around the room, does a few laps, and then returns to the base! I'm annoyed, it's such a slacker!
So, I just move it to a different spot and press the button. Then it begrudgingly starts cleaning.
The robot comes with new-generation rubber brushes
Roomba 800 series features an advanced cleaning system AeroForceTM
They clean perfectly, every single dust speck! But more about that later.
I did mess up the brushes a bit in the beginning - some threads got tangled, I didn't clean them in time, and the rubber got slightly damaged in a few places
But it doesn't affect the cleaning quality.
The robot has a side brush for cleaning corners
Is that a scale? Can I weigh myself?
No, it's not a scale.
Noise
One thing that really stood out to me was the noise level - 60 dB, which is the maximum acceptable noise level for human safety. To put that into perspective, it's comparable to a washing machine, a car driving by, or a TV on a medium volume setting.
It's definitely not the quietest thing in the world, and it's hard to have a conversation or watch TV when it's running. But I only use it during the day when I'm home alone, so it doesn't bother anyone.
Preparation
Before I start the robot, I like to clear the space of any clutter, toys, or clothes. I also move any furniture that might get in its way. And, of course, I make sure to untangle any shoes that might get caught up in the vacuum.
Cleaning
We have a laminate floor and vinyl tile, and this vacuum is perfect for both.
The robot's cleaning path is a bit unpredictable, but I've seen reviews where it follows a straight line, slightly adjusting each time. Our robot is a bit more free-form, but it gets the job done.
Robot vacuum IRobot RoombaIt's got a built-in dirt detection system, so if it realizes the floor is still pretty clean, it won't bother trying to clean it too thoroughly.
The instruction manual has a line that my husband always quotes:
Robot 67 times per second updates its surroundings data
He doesn't believe in the power of AI, but I do.The robot also has a bit of a personality - if it senses movement in the room, it'll decide to come back later and clean around it instead. I guess you could say it's got a bit of common sense.
It's also pretty good at dealing with its own problems. If it gets tangled up in a cord, it'll try to untangle itself by lifting up a bit. It's actually kind of adorable.
The rubber rollers are great for carpets (which we don't have), and they're perfect for picking up dirt and debris from the floor.
And the best part is, the rubber rollers are like tiny little polishers - they smooth out the floor instead of just sweeping it. They're also great at getting rid of dried-on dirt and grime.
The result is always perfect cleanliness - like after a freshly mopped floor. We always walk around barefoot, so I can feel any dirt, dust, or crumbs on the floor.
And don't even get me started on corners - the rubber roller is a game-changer. It might not get the corners as clean as the rest of the floor, but they're still spotless.
One thing I've noticed is that it does a great job of cleaning under furniture and other cluttered areas, but if there are any low-lying spots, it can sometimes leave behind some unsightly scratches.
I'm not sure where it's looking for dirt.
One day I decided to do an experiment. After a thorough cleaning of the entire apartment, I turned on the vacuum. Where did all that dirt come from?
When the vacuum goes into a dark room, I wish it had a light on it.
My cleaning schedule looks like this:
on weekends, every dayon weekdays, whenever needed, but usually every other dayThis schedule is enough to keep the place tidy. I won't say I've completely stopped cleaning the floors, but I do it a lot less often now.
The vacuum takes about an hour and a half to clean the entire apartment. It's a bit of a hassle, but when someone else is doing it, who cares how long it takes?
Maintenance
It's super easy to maintain. Just clean out the dustbin every now and then, and occasionally wipe down the rubber brushes to get rid of any hair that's accumulated. You should also clean the top of the vacuum to get rid of dust.
One time, the side brush stopped working. I had to dig out the instruction manual to find out what to do. It turns out that you need to remove the side brush every now and then to clean out any debris that's accumulated underneath. You'll need to use a screwdriver to remove the screw and take out the brush.
Underneath the brush, I found a huge clump of hair. No wonder the brush stopped working! Since then, I've been taking it off every month or so to clean it out.
Maintenance is pretty straightforward, if you ask me.
Conclusion
I'd say the main drawbacks are the ease with which it can scratch the surface, the high level of noise it produces, and its somewhat unpredictable behavior.
But overall, it's doing a great job of keeping my home clean. Sure, its behavior can be a bit baffling at times (it'll spend 10 minutes cleaning the same spot, then suddenly change direction and start cleaning in a completely different area...), but the end result is a clean and tidy home.
Is it worth the money? For me, yes. I don't have any other vacuum cleaners to compare it to, and I'm happy with the results it's producing. Maybe there are cheaper options out there, but I'm not complaining.
One more thing about the pros:
✅ It doesn't leave any lingering odors (like some traditional vacuum cleaners do). That's thanks to the filters, which are great for people with allergies or asthma.
✅ The battery life is great - it can clean my entire 3-room apartment without needing a recharge (up to 110 sq. meters).
✅ Quick charging (just 3 hours).
✅ It's perfect for homes with pets.
✅ I've gotta say, the AeroForce Extractors are a total game-changer. The way they pick up dirt and debris is seriously impressive.
✅ One-button control is a breeze. I mean, it's so easy to use, even my wife can do it.
✅ Being able to schedule cleanings is a total time-saver. I just set it and forget it.
✅ The Roomba can easily clear small thresholds, which is a huge plus in our house with all the different levels.
✅ The virtual wall system is super handy for keeping it out of certain areas.
✅ The bumper is surprisingly soft and won't scratch up our furniture.
✅ And the best part? It talks to me in Russian, so I know exactly what it's saying.
✅ Plus, I can buy a remote and control it from across the room.
✅ Cleaning has never been easier.
My husband thinks I'm happy now, but let me tell you, there's a whole world of robot vacuums and window cleaners out there. But for now, the Roomba is my BFF.
