My Mixed Experience at the Local Hospital: A Cautionary Tale
summarizeEditor's Summary
I recently gave birth to my first child at the local hospital, and while the staff was amazing, the experience was far from smooth sailing. The hospital's efficiency was impressive at first, but the lack of progress during labor was frustrating. Here's my honest take on what went down.

Hello everyone!
I'd read a lot about childbirth before my first experience, but nothing truly prepares you for the reality of labor.
My labor started at midnight with frequent, painful contractions that left me running to the bathroom five times. I knew it was time to head to the hospital by 5 am.
They quickly checked me in, did a quick examination, and got me settled into a room. I was hooked up to monitors, but nothing was happening except for those awful contractions.
The hospital's efficiency was impressive, but the lack of progress was frustrating. I was sent to the pathology department, where they checked my progress (1 cm dilation) and sent me back to the pre-delivery room. This back-and-forth took about six hours.
The staff was generally amazing – even the janitorial staff was super friendly and helpful.
As I lay there in the pre-delivery room, I could hear other women in labor, and it was clear they were in a lot of pain. I kept telling myself, 'I'm a grown woman (36 years old, first-time mom), I won't scream.' Yeah, right! I ended up screaming louder than anyone on the floor.
They broke my water, and things escalated quickly.
I had one nurse with me the whole time. She was pretty calm at first, but then she lost her composure. With no one else around, she just let her guard down and showed me her true self. She removed the oxygen tube from my mouth, kicked me in the shins, and shouted that I didn't need the baby. And to top it all off, she splashed water in my face.
I guess she thought this would somehow magically stop the labor and leave me feeling calm and relaxed. Newsflash: it didn't.
When I finally gave birth, the baby was eerily quiet.
I asked the nurse why the baby wasn't crying, and she just shrugged and said, 'No.' At that point, I lost it. I had a total meltdown.
It turned out the baby was perfectly fine.
I'm still trying to figure out why this nurse felt the need to behave in such a way. It definitely didn't make my experience at the hospital any easier.
Later, she came to apologize, but I didn't want her apologies. We're all adults, and we should behave professionally at work!
My experience was a mixed bag – the hospital's efficiency and friendly staff were overshadowed by the nurse's unprofessional behavior. I spent a bit over three days there, from July 2024.
