A Hidden Gem on the Way to Baikal: Is Zazerkalie Country Park Worth a Detour to Listvyanka?

summarizeEditor's Summary

We stumbled upon Zazerkalie Country Park while driving to the Taltsy Museum in Listvyanka, and I'm so glad we took the detour. The park's whimsical entrance, complete with a 'Alice in Wonderland'-inspired rabbit, caught our attention, but it's the park's natural beauty and unexpected charms that make it a must-visit. The entrance fee is a reasonable 200 rubles for adults, and kids under 4 get in free. With its picturesque location, clean grounds, and cozy restaurant, Zazerkalie Country Park is a great place to relax and take in the views of Lake Baikal. However, be aware that the beach area is covered in algae, and the cliff edge isn't fenced off, so exercise caution when exploring. We'd been driving past Zazerkalie Country Park for a while, but it wasn't until we decided to visit the Taltsy Museum that we finally stopped by. The park's entrance, featuring a whimsical rabbit inspired by 'Alice in Wonderland,' was too enticing to resist.

Main Information
Name: Zazerkalie Country Park-Restaurant
Address: 49th kilometer of the Baikal Highway, between the Taltsy Museum and Listvyanka settlement, a 5-minute drive from the Big River settlement.
Entrance fee: 200 rubles for adults, children under 4 years old are free.
Zazerkalie Country Park is situated on the picturesque bay of the Angara River at the 49th kilometer of the Baikal Highway.
This place is perfect for a family outing, offering a combination of fresh air from the pine and birch forests, breathtaking views of the Siberian landscape, and a whimsical atmosphere.
The park features over 60 wooden sculptures by Russian and foreign artists, a tubing track with a view of the bay, gazebos, walking areas, and the Zazerkalie restaurant in the style of Lewis Carroll's 'Alice in Wonderland.' The restaurant has two halls: one with 49 and the other with 70 seats.
Zazerkalie Country Park-Restaurant offers a range of activities for your leisure time, from family relaxation to events of various formats.

Getting to the Park
We'd heard about this park for a while, and it used to be called Lukiomor'ye. Interestingly, there's another park with this name in our region, located in the Savvatyevka settlement. It's a picturesque park with wooden sculptures, and I might write a review about it someday.
The road to Zazerkalie is in good condition, but you need to exit Irkutsk. Driving on the Baikal Highway is a pleasure, regardless of the season. The road is well-lit at night.
The easiest way to get to the park is by car, but a taxi will also get you there without any issues. You can try taking a bus to Listvyanka and then ask the driver to drop you off near the park, but you'll need to confirm if this is possible.

The Territory on the Park Entrance
I was a bit disappointed to find that the parking lot wasn't equipped. Cars park wherever they can. We were lucky, as there weren't many people on the territory (we visited on a weekday), but if there were more cars, it would be much harder to park.
Parking, as such, isn't really an optionIt took us a bit to figure out where to buy tickets to get into the park. In the end, we ended up paying for entry at the restaurant cash register.

Food
I guess it's worth mentioning the restaurant, since it's a park-restaurant, after all.
We had planned to grab some food and take a break here, but unfortunately, it was closed for special service. We were really looking forward to it, and it would've been nice if they'd had some sort of limited menu available for guests. For instance, they do that at the Bugduguz park-hotel, which is also on the Baikal Highway. Bugduguz is a popular spot for Irkutsk locals to celebrate weddings, but it's also a regular park where people like us can relax and grab a bite to eat.
As for the restaurant's decor, I have to say I was impressed. You can appreciate every little detail, even the door handle in the bathroom.
The bathroom in the restaurantI didn't even notice at first that the two mirrors in the hand-washing area are actually the eyes of the Cheshire Cat.
The hand-washing area in the restaurant. That's just wow!The couch is shaped like a top hatThe couch in the shape of a top hat. And in the background, you can see a rabbit enclosureI really wanted to try the food here. There are just so many beautiful details to appreciate. For some reason, I'm convinced that the menu would be great too, but I guess we'll just have to try our luck next time.
The restaurant decorThe restaurant has a pretty nice outdoor patio area too.

The Park's Grounds
The park itself is really nice to walk around. It's clean, and the paths are easy to navigate, even with a stroller. However, getting down to the Angara Riverbank is a bit of a challenge. There are only stairs, no ramps or gentle slopes.
The grounds of the Zazerkalie parkFirst things first, we headed down to the lake by the stairs. The stairs are fine, and there are a few benches along the way.
Access to the bay We headed towards the water to leave the pebbles, but my kid was more interested in the seaweed covering the entire beach. Since the park is partially located in the Angara Bay and partially on the shore, we could leave the pebbles at another spot, but we couldn't make it down to the riverbank with the stroller.
Seaweed along the bay's shoreline
The bay is heavily overgrown with seaweed The access to the bay is closer to the park's beginning. After a short while by the water, we headed back into the park and started checking out the wooden sculptures.
The 'Old Good Store' turned out to be a disappointment We didn't find out what they sell at the 'Old Good Store' because it closed right in front of us.
Each sculpture in the park has its own theme.
The theme of the 2018 sculptures - Love The theme of the 2013 sculptures - Giant insects The 'Gift of Love' sculpture The 'Faith in Good' sculpture The 'From Afar' sculpture The 'Zazerkalye' park restaurant The sculpture park basically continues all the way up to the Angara River. The view of the river is stunning, but the shores are steep and not fenced. Maybe it's good that there are no unnecessary barriers obstructing the view, but with small kids, you need to be extra careful here. The Angara River shoreline with a steep drop
Park Attractions
We didn't find many attractions, but I've highlighted a few:
Clear kayak rentals and SUP-boards are available. I stumbled upon clear kayaks in the park, but there was no information about rentals. It turns out, it's a new feature in the park, and the rental point on the lake opens tomorrow (07.12.2025)Take a swing on the Russian swings, just like in the Talc park
Russian swingsLearn to walk on stilts
Stilts The tubing trail is operational during the winter.Have a picnic in one of the gazebos. You can bring your own food to the park, and there's no charge for renting the gazebos.
Gazebo. A great spot to relaxYou can also just take a leisurely walk around the park, admire the sculptures, take in the views of the Angara River, and get familiar with Siberian flora. Walking around the park is considered safe, as the area is treated for ticks.
Plant: Northern Bor ConclusionI think the creators of the park did a great job with the restaurant's design, but I still wish they could've tied in the Alice in Wonderland theme throughout the entire park. It would've been fun to find references to the story while walking along the trails, like setting up an impromptu 'Mole Rabbit hole.' Maybe it would've been worth adding some themed activities for kids to make the trip to the 'Looking-glass Park' restaurant really feel like a fairy tale.
I wouldn't give this park 5⭐️. Apart from the drawbacks I mentioned earlier, I felt something was missing on the park's grounds – a unique selling point.

Recommendations
I recommend visiting the park! To take a relaxed stroll and unwind by the lake, you'll only need a couple of hours, so it's easy to combine it with a visit to Listvyanka, Talc, or one of the cabins on the Baikal Trail.
