Walker 2021: A Remake That Falls Flat

I'll be honest, I wasn't exactly waiting for the Walker series, but it was on my watchlist. As you know, the Walker series is a remake of the classic Chuck Norris series, so let's see what they've come up with.

Walker / Walker▶ GENERAL INFORMATIONThe American TV series Walker premiered on the CW on January 22, 2021.The first season consists of 10 episodes, released weekly. Currently, 3 episodes are available to watch. The season finale will air on March 26, 2021.Runtime is 45 minutes.

→ Series synopsis:

Walker is a police officer who worked undercover for two years. Along with his two kids, he returns to his hometown of Austin, Texas, where he realizes his work is far from over. With the help of a new partner, the only female ranger, he starts fighting crime.

→ Cast.

The lead role goes to Jared Padalecki. I'm sure all the Supernatural fans are thrilled, but I've never been a fan of this actor, and he's completely miscast as Walker.

Walker Season 1I'm not even sure about the 'tough Walker' in Chuck Norris's time, but I doubt he was as whiny as the new Walker, played by Padalecki.He'll be joined by Lindsey Morgan as the only female ranger. She's your typical feminist trying to prove herself (not interesting, not new, getting old).

Walker→ Plot revolves around Walker's return to his hometown, where his wife's death led to family problems, crime-fighting, and resolving relationships with loved ones.→ Pacing / Tension. The first three episodes are completely pointless, Walker just cries... Padalecki's face is always sad, so I think he's completely miscast as the tough guy, and he's way too sappy.

But honestly, not much happens in the first three episodes. The plot moves at a snail's pace, and most of the screen time is spent on the hero's inner turmoil, his personal struggles, and family drama. He does catch some bad guys with his partner, but that's about it – it's a 10-minute affair, and the rest is just whining and pointless chatter.

Walker 2021→ Action / Thriller. The only real intrigue is the mystery surrounding the hero's wife's death. I'm guessing that's what the show will focus on, but so far, it's been given short shrift. There's hardly any action – I mean, it's almost nonexistent. Watching the show is a chore; you'll find yourself zoning out, wondering what to do with yourself to stay awake.→ Plot Holes. It's funny when the bad guys shoot at the hero's car, but somehow they miss the horse and the guy riding it, who's also chasing them... it looks ridiculous.

→ Music. The soundtrack is forgettable – it's just background noise.

The Walker Series / Walker 2021→ Atmosphere / Cinematography. The one thing that's somewhat redeeming is the show's warm color palette. They often show off beautiful natural scenery, and the cinematography is pleasant to look at.

The Walker Series 2021→ Genre. This show's got elements of a thriller, crime, drama, and western. There are cowboy hats, tough guys with guns, and beautiful vistas of the Wild West – it's all very pretty and immersive. But they could've toned down the drama a bit.→ Family Drama / Dialogue. What really got on my nerves was how the show focuses more on the hero's family problems than on catching bad guys. There are hardly any action scenes – the hero just suffers, and he looks more like a puppy than a tough guy. And don't even get me started on the empty dialogue; it's painful to listen to.

Walker 2021 → My Predictions. I managed to watch three episodes with a lot of effort, but I was bored and not interested. What's going to happen next? I'm guessing Walker will probably find the people responsible for his wife's death and make them pay, but before that, he'll just be walking around and whining, and trying to earn the trust of his kids. There are so many shows like this out there, and you won't see anything new here. Walker just feels so bland, and the way the story unfolds is so tedious that I want to compare it to a person who takes a long time to slowly chew on obvious things. I highly doubt I'll be watching the show further, it just didn't resonate with me at all.

It's hard to say who might enjoy the Walker 2021 show, maybe just the girls who are into Jared Padalecki, but definitely not fans of Chuck Norris (the common theme here is the wild west and cowboy hats).
