I just finished reading Vera Panova's Sentimental Novel, and I'm still reeling from the experience. The epigraph from Pushkin, 'Oh, youth, how light you are!' perfectly captures the lighthearted, airy quality of the book.
This novel holds a special place in my heart because my late mom loved it dearly. She'd re-read it time and time again, but for some reason, she was always a bit self-conscious about it. Maybe she thought it was beneath her, given her background in Indian literature.
As a professional, she'd probably been around the block a few times, but when everyone else was raving about Altyist Danilov, she'd blush. Not that she didn't appreciate the book - she just felt like it wasn't cool.
The Sentimental Novel is an easy, engaging read that's far from clichéd for its time. It's like a snapshot of the formative years of many Soviet writers. Vera Panova does an incredible job capturing the spirit of that tumultuous period.
I also watched the film adaptation, which was equally impressive. The cast surprised me with their unconventional roles - Baryshnikov, Karachentsov, Lyubshin, Yankovskiy, and Bortnik all shone in parts they weren't usually known for.
And can we talk about Gudzenko's portrayal of the village granny? It's a performance that's simply unforgettable. I think the filmmakers wanted to shake things up, to match the book's spirit of experimentation and innovation.
Now, I wouldn't say the ending is overly optimistic, but it feels organic. Zoya's a complex character, and I appreciate how Panova didn't shy away from showing her flaws.
Vera Panova's prose is of the highest caliber, and I'd highly recommend her work. Some of her most popular novels include Spitniks, Kruzhilika, and Evdokia. I also enjoy her lesser-known works like Seasons, Worker's Settlement, and Romance Outline.
What I love about Panova's writing is how accessible it is, yet still manages to tackle complex themes. Her characters are multidimensional, and her stories are always engaging.
One last thing - Panova's memoirs, My Own and Only, are simply fantastic. It's one of the best memoirs out there, in my opinion.
