Hello everyone!
I was browsing through my library and stumbled upon Hannibal by Thomas Harris. I'd heard of Hannibal Lecter, so I was curious to read the book. But, it turned out to be only the third part of a series, and I had to track down the first two books.
I managed to find the second part, The Silence of the Lambs, which is where I started my acquaintance with Hannibal. The first part, The Red Dragon, is actually the first book in the series, and if I can find it in another library, I might give it a read.
So, let's talk about the second part of the series, The Silence of the Lambs. I'll give you a brief summary of the book and share my thoughts and impressions.
A Little About the Silence of the Lambs Edition
I came across an old edition of the book, published back in 1993 by Vagrius.

The cover looks pretty old-fashioned, more like a pulp fiction novel than a serious thriller. It's a bit amusing, and it doesn't give you the same dark vibe that you'd expect from a book like this. Considering what the book is about, I would have expected a more ominous cover.
Apparently, the cover design was fitting for its time, though.
It's worth noting that you might come across different covers for this book. Even on Amazon, there are multiple covers to choose from.
On the back cover, there's a brief summary of the book, but it doesn't give away too much. It's more of a general description of the series, rather than a specific summary of this particular book.
The Silence of the Lambs Thomas Harris reviewsI'd say this book is of average size, with 399 pages. And let's be honest, the last few pages are just notes.
Back in the day, age ratings weren't as strict, but considering the horrors described in this book, it's clear it's not for the faint of heart – definitely 18+ material.
The book's gotten a bit worn out over time, with some yellowed pages. But that didn't stop me from reading it, of course. It's always nicer to read a new book, but if there's no choice, a well-loved old one will do.
Now that I've got that out of the way, let's move on to what this book's actually about.

What's This Book About?
Let's take a look at the blurb from a bookstore website, where they're selling a newer, fancier edition:
Dr. Hannibal Lecter – a brilliant psychiatrist, but the world can only feel safe as long as he's behind the steel door of his solitary cell in a maximum-security prison. Dr. Lecter is a killer. A gourmet cannibal. Clarice Starling – an FBI trainee with a knack for empathy, and it's this that drives her every move.
Sadly, the fates of our heroes are intertwined in a hunt for Buffalo Bill – the most ruthless serial killer out there…
The Silence of the Lambs Thomas Harris reviewsThis book revolves around Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a psychiatrist with a dark secret – he's a cannibalistic killer. He's currently locked up in a maximum-security prison, stuck in solitary confinement.
As far as I can tell, the first part of the series focuses on Lecter's backstory and his capture.
But in this part, the main goal is to catch another serial killer, Buffalo Bill – a ruthless murderer with a string of victims to his name.
I've got to say, I think Hannibal might be the key to catching him, since he's a psychiatrist who's an expert on the psychology of serial killers, and that's exactly why Clarice Starling, a young FBI trainee, is sent to see him.
I'm curious to see if Clarice can get Hannibal to open up, if they'll be able to catch Buffalo Bill, and what other adventures are in store for the characters in this novel. But I'm going to move on to my impressions of reading this book.

My Impressions of the Book
I want to make it clear that I haven't seen the movie adaptation of this novel, so my impressions are based solely on the book. Maybe I'll check out the movie at some point and write a review, but for now, I'm sticking to my thoughts on the book.
The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris - ReviewsOverall, I really enjoyed the novel. It's a pretty unique and subtle take on the serial killer genre. I've never read a book that tries to get a character like Hannibal Lecter to cooperate with the FBI before – I wouldn't dare go near him myself!
But Clarice is a different story. She's a pretty fearless and determined young woman who's not afraid to take risks. Of course, she was sent to see Hannibal by her superiors, but it's still impressive that she's willing to put herself in harm's way like that.
It's also worth noting that Clarice is a bit of a complex character – she's not just a one-dimensional hero. She's got her own motivations and desires, and she's not afraid to speak her mind. I think that's part of what makes her so compelling.
As for Hannibal, he's definitely an interesting character, but he's not the main focus of the book. The real stars of the show are the FBI agents who are trying to catch Buffalo Bill, and the cat-and-mouse game they play with him.
The Silence of the Lambs Thomas Harris ReviewsBut despite the slow pace, I found reading the book interesting. I was pretty invested in Clarice's adventures and what she did to help uncover Buffalo Bill's identity.
That being said, the author's dry writing style did detract from my overall experience, but I'm not going to penalize the book for it. Overall, I really enjoyed it more than I didn't.
I loved how the book was unapologetic and sometimes graphic. The scenes that made me squirm were done tastefully, and I appreciated that the author didn't get bogged down in romantic subplots. When he did touch on the personal lives of the FBI agents, it was brief and tasteful, showing that they're more than just their work.
The Silence of the Lambs Thomas Harris ReviewsPeople often complain that the book is dry and slow. And yeah, it's true – the writing style is dry. But I didn't find it boring. I was actually really engaged, and I'm looking forward to reading the next part, 'Hannibal'. Maybe I'll even track down the first and fourth parts if they're available at the library. For now, I'd definitely recommend the book and continue reading the series.
Final Verdict
I really enjoyed 'The Silence of the Lambs' by Thomas Harris. It was a thrilling read, and I loved following Clarice as she interacted with Hannibal Lecter to uncover Buffalo Bill's identity.
Despite the dry writing style, I wouldn't dock any points, so it's a solid 5 stars from me.
