The Big Short's Creators Have Lost Their Grip on Reality - 'The Rip' Falls Flat, But Matt Damon and Ben Affleck Shine

summarizeEditor's Summary

I recently checked out 'The Rip' on Netflix, and while it's not the best movie I've seen, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck's involvement is definitely a highlight. The movie dropped on January 16, 2026, and it's available in great quality online. Unfortunately, the rest of the movie falls flat, with subpar cinematography, uneven sound, and a weak plot. But hey, it's worth watching for the leads' performances alone. Here's what you can expect from 'The Rip':

Hello everyone!
I recently checked out the buzzworthy new release from Netflix - "The Rip". It dropped on January 16, 2026, and it's already available in great quality online.
The Rip reviewI'm not a fan of Netflix's new releases - sometimes you get a decent movie, but mostly it's just trash. Let's be real, the actors' involvement doesn't necessarily make the movie better.
The only Netflix series I actually enjoyed was "One Hundred Years of Solitude".
"The Rip" caught my attention mainly because of the good-looking Damon and Affleck.

General info
Genre:
thriller, crime, actionDuration:
1 hour 53 minutesRating:
18+Release date:
January 16, 2026Plot:
Miami. A member of the narcotics unit is murdered. The FBI interrogates her colleagues, suspecting that one of them might be involved in the crime. That same evening, the narcotics unit receives a tip and heads to a suburban house where they expect to find a large sum of money from the cartel. However, they find an even bigger amount. Tensions rise as the team starts receiving threatening calls, and it seems like there's a traitor among them.
The RIP reviewThe movie starts off with a pretty intense scene – the murder of a police captain. What's weird is that the cops suspect one of their own colleagues might be behind it. This team's been dealing with narco-traffickers, so they're no strangers to dirty money. Maybe someone was planning to siphon some off for themselves, or maybe they already have and are trying to cover their tracks.
Two colleagues and a friend of theirs assemble their team and head out on a mission based on an anonymous tip, only to find themselves in a situation that's totally unexpected...
The RIP review The RIP reviewThe movie follows the story of an elite police unit that's supposed to be a tight-knit team, but honestly, it looks like a bunch of misfits in uniforms. There's the white leader who's still reeling from losing his kid, his buddy who's a bit of a hothead and loves to throw things around, the quiet Asian guy, the black woman with the bandana and a mouth that's always on her, and the white partner who's always asking to go home. It looks like they're more of a crew of kids in riot gear than a professional police unit. There's no discipline, no protocol – they're just winging it like they're on some kind of wild adventure.I'm not sure if this movie's supposed to be for kids or what, but adults don't behave like this in real life. Plus, the storyline is all over the place. I don't want to give away too much, but trust me, most of the movie is just a bunch of ridiculous, over-the-top nonsense. It's like they've given up on writing coherent scripts lately.
A Bitter Taste / The RIP review A Bitter Taste / The RIP reviewNobody expected the ending to salvage the mess, but unfortunately, it fell flat. For the first part of the film, the characters are just counting money. It's boring, uninteresting, and lacks real development. The dialogue is cringeworthy – adults talking like pre-teens: 'Hey, bro,' 'Dude, what's up?' and so on.
The shootouts were mostly moved to the final quarter of the film, but they look like toys. At night, a tank drives through an empty city... and it's missing only Lenin on board.
The plot is a jumbled mess.
A Bitter Taste / The RIP reviewEven the talented actors who participated in this disaster are hard to pity. But Matt Damon and Ben Affleck were a highlight – they delivered some solid performances. A Bitter Taste / The RIP reviewSo, the plot – let's just say it's best not to overthink it.
The visuals were also a letdown. The cinematography didn't impress me. Not only were the scenes dark and hard to see, but the camera work was also inconsistent – sometimes from behind someone's shoulder, sometimes from under a chair leg.
A Bitter Taste / The RIP reviewMy Verdict
This film was a waste of time. The only reason to watch it is to see the 50-year-old hunks, Affleck and Damon. There's no artistic value in this movie whatsoever.
I'm giving it 2 starsI wouldn't recommend it
Wishing you all the best!
