When a Younger Woman Steals the Spotlight: A Movie Where Moms and Daughters Are Suddenly Peers
I stumbled upon this series on YouTube and, I'm not proud of it, but I thought it was some old film from back in the day.
This series has four episodes at 45 minutes each, and it doesn't feel dragged out at all because the events are so dynamic from one episode to the next – in modern cinema, they'd probably break it up into 12 episodes or something.
This series is clearly geared towards a female audience, and men shouldn't even bother starting it – it'll be a total snooze-fest for them.
Sure enough, it looks like they cut corners on the budget wherever they could – there aren't even any big action scenes, and they cast 40-year-old actresses as 20-year-old girls.
This creates a sense of absurdity, and sometimes it's even hard to keep a straight face when you've got a 40-year-old woman playing the part of a schoolgirl behind a 20-year-old woman playing the part of a pensioner.
If you put a perm on a 40-year-old woman and dress her up in a mini skirt, she's not going to magically become 20 years younger.
I was really taken aback by the age difference between the mother and daughter, who look like they're the same age. The thing is, Polina Kutepova plays the lead role of a willful and authoritarian matriarch, and she does it perfectly. She's a polished woman who turns heads, and when the mother and daughter, who are actually the same age, share the screen, it's just awkward and cringeworthy. I'd give the casting director a hard time for that.
The story starts off as standard fare, but it picks up speed and takes a turn into fantastical territory. Polina Kutepova plays a university dean who's got it all - a comfortable lifestyle, a beautiful apartment, power at work, and a loving husband. But things take a turn when her husband, a total slacker, cheats on her with his graduate student. They've been together for years, raised a daughter who's going through a tough phase - she's into partying, not into her studies, and treats her parents poorly. It's clear she's in her 30s, but the mom's not getting any younger either. And then everything starts to fall apart for the dean when her husband's infidelity comes to light.
I was struck by how laid-back this guy is. He's completely content with living life on his own terms and never takes responsibility for anything. He's used to coasting on his wife's decisions and I'm still trying to figure out what Galina sees in her husband, Alexei. Guys like him are a dime a dozen once you step outside the university bubble on a normal day. Every time I looked at him, I couldn't help but think of that Comedy Club joke Marina Fedunkiv tells to Gariy Khazanov:
He's just so wishy-washy!
And there's this guy just going about his day, not lifting a finger, while all these intense dramas and power struggles unfold around him. He's not even willing to take responsibility for anything, just observing from the sidelines as the real drama unfolds. Polina Kutepova's character is so strong-willed that she can't even let her husband leave, all because of some perceived slight. It looks like the writer was going for some grand, otherworldly love story, but it just comes across as petty jealousy and hurt pride.
I have to say, I was expecting a more predictable storyline from this show, especially given its target audience. But then they threw in a pregnancy plot twist, and I was hooked. I mean, I thought Galina was too old to be getting pregnant, but I guess that's just not the case here. The writers really went all out with this plotline, and it's got some serious Harry Potter-esque magic to it. It starts off a bit bland, but trust me, it's worth sticking around for.
One thing that really stood out to me was the lack of polish in the production. I mean, it's clear that they were going for a retro vibe, but it feels like they phoned it in at times. Like, have you ever noticed how they just used plastic windows in the background? It's just so obvious. And don't even get me started on the makeup and special effects. It's like they were trying to be creative, but it just ended up looking lazy.
And then there's the makeup and special effects. I mean, it's like they were trying to be creative, but it just ended up looking like a hot mess. I'm pretty sure the makeup artists were having a rough day, because some of the looks are just...wow. I'm not sure if they were going for a certain aesthetic or not, but it's definitely memorable.
I have to admit, I initially thought of this series as a nostalgic aid for seniors, but I decided to focus on the storyline and the actors' performances instead. Because in melodramas, a good acting job can often elevate an otherwise weak storyline. And let me tell you, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The actors deliver great performances, Kutepova is as always on top of her game, but I think my favorite character was the grandmother – the most vibrant role in the film, even if it's not the main one. She so skillfully and concisely portrays certain situations and offers advice to her granddaughter that you could quote her all day.
The wife of Vasily Yegorov plays her role perfectly, it suits her character so well – a guy without any ambitions, a bit of a pushover, and he nailed it. And their daughter is surprisingly more like her father than her mother – a timid, spineless, and envious girl.
This film shows that even in a seemingly happy and well-off family, everyone can be unhappy. And what's the reason for this? I don't know. But one thing is clear – the family's parenting and educational skills are severely lacking. The grandmother raised her daughter to be a terrible person, and in turn, the daughter raised her own daughter to be even worse. There's no good mother figure in this family, and if you look at the results of their upbringing, it's clear that each of them is selfish in her own way and can only produce a selfish offspring. And yet, each of them is searching for love in this world, but when they don't find it, they become even more resentful.
I feel bad for the young boy who's going to grow up surrounded by these bitter women, with their attention focused on him all the time.
It looks like they were planning a second season, and it would've been great to see it, but it's been almost 10 years since the show came out, and nobody's picked it up. I think they just couldn't afford to make it.
I'd give it four stars, despite the heavy consequences the characters face and the realistic portrayal of their situation. It's a pretty gritty show, but it's been toned down a bit for the sake of drama. It's not quite as raw as a Balabanov film.
The show's pretty thought-provoking, because women who are willing to do whatever it takes to hold onto a man and crush anyone who gets in their way should probably ask themselves if it's really worth it after watching this.
Overall, the concept is good, the storyline's engaging and dynamic, and if the creators had more money, they might have been able to make it a bit more polished. As it is, the show came out a long time ago, but it kind of flew under the radar.
I'm definitely recommending this product!
