A Cautionary Tale: Why 'The Princess' Cartoon Isn't Suitable for Young Kids

summarizeEditor's Summary

As a parent, it's tough to see a cartoon that's more about teaching kids to be selfish and demanding. The Once Upon a Time, There Was a Princess series has some catchy titles, but the content falls flat. With 13 episodes to get through, you'll be cringing at the princess's behavior and wishing for a better role model. The colorful animation is a highlight, but it's not enough to save the cartoon from its problematic message. I've watched it with my kid, and I've got to say, it's not the kind of show I want to see them emulate. The princess's behavior is often selfish, and the cartoon promotes a negative attitude towards authority figures. Some episodes are too focused on material possessions and treats, and the princess's treatment of her dog is often neglectful. The cartoon's message is unclear and inconsistent, and the animation can be overwhelming at times. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this cartoon to parents looking for a positive role model for their kids.

Hello everyone!
I've been meaning to write a review of this cartoon for ages, and I've finally decided to go for it. I've got some thoughts to share, so stick with me.
The cartoon's called 'Once Upon a Time, There Was a Princess,' and it's a multi-part series about a little princess who's got pretty standard kid wishes - more sweets and fewer lectures!
'Once Upon a Time There Was a Princess' - a multi-part cartoon about a little charming and restless girl. Each episode is a teachable story from her life.
There are currently 13 episodes!
You might notice the titles of some episodes right away...
1 I Won't Go to Sleep!
2 I Want Presents!
3 I'm a Glutton!
4 Magic Stories
5 The Spoiler
6 It's About Food
7 I Don't Want to Lose!
8 Take Off My Hat!
9 It's About Cleaning
10 I Want to Go to the Beach!
11 I Don't Want to Go to Kindergarten!
12 Happy New Year!
13 Ouch!
Cartoon characters:
The Family - mom, dad, the princess, and their dog.
Everyone's got crowns on their heads (except the dog)...Cartoon structure:
Each episode starts with the princess's tantrums and 'demands' - she doesn't want to go swimming, doesn't want to go to kindergarten, doesn't want to wear a hat, doesn't want to eat, and so on. It's like a standard set of kid tantrums...
After that, she starts singing a song about her tantrum, saying she doesn't want to and so on.
Then, her parents try to fix the situation, making her understand her mistakes. Either that finally clicks with her, and she starts behaving well.
I started playing this cartoon with my kid when they were 2.5 years old. By the time they turned 3, they were really into it and would deliberately play it on the tablet! And I started noticing a negative impact on my kid.For instance, the series 'I Don't Want to Go to Kindergarten!' really stuck with my kid, where Princess doesn't want to go to kindergarten.
And every morning, we'd wake up to tantrums because they didn't want to go to kindergarten, because Princess didn't want to go to kindergarten either! So, despite the second part of the cartoon showing her loving kindergarten, my kid only remembered the first negative part and it stuck with them. And my positive stories and watching the second part with them didn't help! So, this cartoon had a negative impact on my kid's already complicated kindergarten adjustment.
Also, the series 'The Zamara'... There was a period when my kid refused to take a bath, although they used to love playing in the water. When I asked them why, they'd say 'Princess doesn't like taking baths either!'
Thankfully, they didn't take the cue from the series 'I Want Presents!' where Princess throws a tantrum in the store to get presents!
Since then, the cartoon 'Once Upon a Time, There Was a Princess' is off-limits for my kid. I don't let them watch it.With the upcoming favorite holiday of my kid, New Year's, they're already excited and started watching a collection of New Year's cartoons on YouTube, and they stumbled upon the New Year's episode of Princess 'Happy New Year!', which starts off by saying that there's no Santa Claus and that Mom and Dad put presents under the tree!!!
I've got to say, this is a real kicker. My neighbor Dima told my kid that Santa isn't real, and now they're singing a little ditty about it!My neighbor Dima said, There's no Santa Claus, It's Dad in disguise, That's the whole story, His beard is made of fake fur, And his nose is plastic red, But I think Dad is the best Santa!
Honestly, I'm speechless. Now my kid is repeating that Santa isn't real and singing this song! When I ask who told them that, they say 'The Princess!'
And my kid is only 3 years old! I get it when older kids are told this kind of thing, but a 3-year-old should still believe in the magic of Santa and the wonder of New Year's Eve!
So, it looks like the creators had a good idea for the show, but this particular episode is more suited for older kids. Young children will remember only the first part of the show and the first song, which is definitely a negative. And older kids might have different reactions to this episode - some might forget it, while others might pick up on the negative behavior!
I wouldn't recommend this episode of 'The Princess' to anyone! In our case, my kid took away only the negative from it.
