A Gripping Tale of Friendship, Betrayal, and Redemption - 'The Last Duel' Review

summarizeEditor's Summary

I recently devoured 'The Last Duel' and was blown away by its epic story of friendship, betrayal, and redemption. The movie adaptation, directed by Ridley Scott, brings this tale to life in a big way. With an all-star cast, including Matt Damon, Adam Driver, and Jodie Comer, this film is a must-see for anyone who loves historical dramas. The cinematography is stunning, the costumes are impeccable, and the performances are top-notch. But what really sets this film apart is its thought-provoking exploration of honor, loyalty, and the true cost of war. If you're looking for a movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat and leave you thinking long after the credits roll, then 'The Last Duel' is the perfect choice.

Hello everyone!
After devouring an incredible book, I decided to experience its movie adaptation for myself. Say hello to "The Last Duel".
Year:
2021
Country:
USA
UK
Director:
Ridley Scott
Cast:
Matt Damon
Adam Driver
Jodie Comer
Plot:
France, late 14th century. The bond between knights Jean de Carrouges and his friend and neighbor Jacques Le Gris gradually frays, leading to an irreconcilable conflict. Offended Carrouges seeks help from King Charles VI of France, who decrees that the two enemies must settle their dispute in a deadly duel.
Once, Jean de Carrouges and Jacques Le Gris were more than just comrades - they were true friends. Le Gris even became the godfather of Carrouges' firstborn child. But the son and wife were taken by the epidemic. A few years later, Carrouges marries again. He chooses Margaret, a beauty from a noble family, who, by the way, betrayed the king in the past by switching sides to the English and then returning.
Last Duel Last Duel Last DuelFriendships can get strained over time, and it's not uncommon for a little thing to set them off. I've seen it happen with my friends, and it's a shame when it does. In the case of Karrouch and Le Gris, they were once close friends, but their friendship was put to the test when they found themselves on opposite sides of a battle. Karrouch was a dedicated soldier, always off fighting, while Le Gris was loyal to his lord, Pierre d'Alençon. It's a complicated situation, and one that ultimately led to a bitter rivalry.
The Final Duel The Final Duel The Final Duel But the real drama unfolds when Le Gris sets his sights on Margaret. Having committed the violence, the knight won't think twice about Carrouges fighting to the end and seeking a duel to the death with the king. By that point, young Charles VI sees no other outcome but to settle the matter with a judicial duel. The two knights will clash in a fight to the death, with the loser being declared guilty posthumously. The Final Duel The Final Duel The Final Duel And if Carrouges loses, Margaret, as a perjurer, will be burned at the stake alive.
- Knights, let's begin! - Lady, based on your testimony, I risk my life in a fight with Jacques Le Gris. You know the reasons: justice and truth. In the presence of all of you, I swear I've told the truth. May God's will be done. God's mercy is stern justice. Let's pray that this duel won't be worse than after the murder of Charles of Flanders: Le Gris will rip Carrouges' testicles off in hand-to-hand combat. - Let them begin!
Last Duel Last DuelThe story is based on real events. The incident actually happened, and there's a lot of historical documentation and mentions about it. There are still debates about who's to blame. The film adaptation is spot on, in my opinion.
Each man will fight on horseback, armed with whatever they choose, using any weapon or means of attack or defense they prefer. Except for weapons and similar items, or those made with magic or spells, or any other forbidden means, as decreed by God and the Holy Church for all faithful Christians. If anyone brings a weapon made with magic, spells, or any other evil arts to the battlefield, they'll be punished as an enemy of God, a traitor, or a murderer...
The main characters deliver a great performance. The emotions are well-portrayed.
The Final Duel The Final Duel The Final Duel The Final Duel The Final Duel The Final Duel- One of us has lied. Let God be the judge. - Sir Jean, if you lose the duel, it will prove the falsity of the accusations, and your wife will face terrible consequences. God will spare the one who speaks the truth, and justice will prevail. - I have nothing to fear. - Excellent!
The shooting is a perfect fit for the medieval setting - it's all grey and bleak, just like the atmosphere of the time.
Last Duel Last Duel Last Duel Last Duel Last Duel Last Duel Last Duel Last DuelI was hooked from start to finish. The cinematography was top-notch, the music was epic, and the costumes and makeup were spot on. The non-linear storytelling really drew me in - it gave me a unique perspective on the events, like experiencing two different sides of the same story, which was already pretty far in the past. I found it really engaging.
The film's cinematography and music really stood out to me. The grey and bleak atmosphere of the medieval setting was perfectly captured, and the costumes and makeup were incredibly detailed. The non-linear storytelling kept me on my toes, and I loved how it gave me a fresh perspective on the events.
The Final Showdown The Final ShowdownIf you haven't seen this movie, I highly recommend watching it and reading the book as well.
