I'm not a huge fan of disaster movies, but sometimes I'm in the mood for something big-screen and explosive. Today, I'm sharing my thoughts on 'The Depths', the American premiere that hit our theaters recently.

About the movie:

Year: 2024

Country: USA

Genre: action, thriller, drama, adventure

Director: Claudio Fah

Release date in Russia: January 18, 2024

Release date worldwide: January 18, 2024

Age rating: 18+

MPAA rating: R

Runtime: 1:30

A plane crashes in the Pacific Ocean. The sunken airliner hangs on the edge of a cliff, and the survivors find themselves trapped in a vortex of air currents. As the oxygen supply dwindles, the passengers start fighting for survival.

All the photos are taken from the official trailer of the movie.

Plot in a nutshell:The story revolves around a group of three young friends: Ava, the daughter of a prominent politician, her boyfriend Jet, and their friend Kyle, who are on a plane to a Pacific island for a relaxing getaway. They're joined by Ava's elderly bodyguard, Brandon.

Everything seems pretty chill, with the main characters looking forward to a luxurious stay at a fancy hotel. The flight is smooth, and they're all set for a relaxing vacation. However, things take a drastic turn just a few minutes into the movie. A bird gets sucked into the engine, causing the plane to malfunction and lose altitude. The plane's structure is severely damaged, and some passengers are thrown out of the aircraft.

As the plane crashes into the ocean, it's a miracle anyone survives. But the real challenge begins when the wreckage starts to break apart, and the air supply dwindles. It's a desperate fight for survival, and I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.

Just when you think all hope is lost, a team of underwater rescuers arrives on the scene. But they're not out of the woods yet - a school of sharks has caught wind of the blood in the water, and they're closing in fast. It's a heart-pumping, action-packed sequence that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

My takeaways from watching:

Story:Let's face it - the creators of disaster movies like this one don't exactly break new ground. We've seen plane crashes, people drowning in the ocean, and sharks attacking - it's all been done before. I mean, there are plenty of movies out there that feature these exact same plot points, like 'Flightplan', 'Open Water', and 'The Shallows'. And let's not forget the 'Jaws' franchise - that's a whole series of movies built around sharks attacking humans.

I've gotta say, the creators of Deep Rising thought, "Hey, why just pick one of the popular themes to blow our audience's minds? Let's do it all!" So, we get a plane crash and a bunch of people stuck underwater with a bunch of hungry sharks. To me, the film is a real thrill ride that keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very end. One thing that bugged me, though, is that the plot is pretty predictable - you can usually guess who's gonna make it out alive.

Acting:I think the whole cast did a great job, and the characters felt really believable with some awesome personalities. Take Ava, for example, played by Sophie McShera - she's your typical American cheerleader type. But as the story goes on, we see that not everyone's a nice person at first. But when things get really bad, people start to come together and put their differences aside. It's a lot easier to survive when you're working together, you know?

For me, the two characters that really stood out were the elderly woman, played by Phyllis Logan (she's also in Doctor Who), and her granddaughter, played by Grace Natalie. I felt really bad for them, and I think they were some of the most relatable characters in the whole film. I also have to give a shoutout to Colin McFarlane, who played Ava's bodyguard - he's one of the most level-headed characters in the whole movie, and he keeps his cool even when things get really crazy.

Special effects and locations:I've got to say, the creators of this film are masters at building tension. They start off with a beautiful shot of happy passengers flying off to a relaxing vacation, and then BAM! The plane just falls apart and crashes, with people spilling out into the water. And then it just gets worse and worse - people are dying left and right, and it's a real nail-biter. The action moves fast, and the sense of dread just builds and builds.

The film does a great job of making you feel like you're right there in the water with the characters. The sharks are super realistic, and it's not like they're just cartoonish or anything. The special effects are top-notch, and it really helps to sell the whole underwater experience.

Overall:This film is a real page-turner - it's got you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. The big-screen experience is especially intense, and it's one of those movies that you can't look away from. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who loves a good thriller. Just a heads up, though - it's not really a horror movie, per se. It's more of a survival story about people trying to make it through a really tough situation.
