I'm Hooked on Shmyak!

summarizeEditor's Summary

I'm a self-proclaimed bookworm, and I've got to say, the Shmyak cat series has really captured my attention. My daughter's been obsessed with these adorable cats for over a year now, and I'm guilty of sneaking in new books every now and then. The bigger format is definitely worth the extra cost, especially when you factor in the fun, engaging stories. The price difference is significant, but trust me, it's worth every penny. I've bought eight more books on sale, which was probably a bad move, but my daughter's thrilled. The bigger format is perfect for reading with my daughter, and the stories are engaging, entertaining, and easy to follow. The characters are well-developed, relatable, and lovable, and the illustrations are adorable, colorful, and add to the story's charm. The value for money is excellent, considering the quality and content.

Hello fellow book lovers!
I stumbled upon the Shmyak cat series about a year ago, and I was intrigued by the mixed reviews. I decided to give it a try and ended up buying eight more books on sale, which was probably a mistake!
My daughter's been obsessed with Shmyak for a year now, and I try to sneak in new books every now and then. And what's a New Year without Shmyak, right? When I saw this book, I decided to give it a shot.
Before this book, we had the smaller format, which were cheaper but just as fun. The price difference is significant, especially without discounts. The bigger book costs 275 rubles, while the smaller ones cost around 195 rubles.
The book's width is 25 cm. I bought it on WB for 265 rubles.
This New Year's book is already big, with wide spreads. The spreads are big, the pictures are larger in size, but my three-year-old prefers the smaller format books for reading. They're easier for her to grab off the shelf and carry to her bed, where we usually read. The bigger book is like a weight she drags behind her.
The Shmyak series is massive. I once thought I'd collect them all, but then I realized they'd never fit in my bookshelf. It's better to choose the most interesting stories and not buy them all. My wallet and bookshelf aren't made of rubber, after all.
The hardcover book has excellent build quality. The corners are a bit sharp, which is typical for Clever Publishing. I've had books from them before that were so sharp you could cut yourself on them. You have to handle them with care. The paper is dense, matte, and smooth. The font is large and there's not too much text. I think it would be perfect for beginner readers.
I'd never heard of the author and illustrator Rob Scotton before Shmyak, but now I'm a fan. I'm more into classics, and modern children's literature, especially when it comes to series, isn't really my thing. It turns out that 'Happy New Year, Shmyak' is the fourth book in the series, so it's essentially the first one.
Rob Scotton is a renowned artist and writer, and the literary father of the adorable cat Shmyak, loved by children and parents all around the world.
The book is rated 3+, but I think it's more like 2+ and goes on forever. There's not much text, the stories are simple, and there are loads of pictures. I'd even consider some of the books in this series for kids who are just starting to read. They're really funny, and the books have lots of sound effects, making it a fun and entertaining read.
I think kids around 5 years old will appreciate the humor in this book even more than 3-year-olds. It's that classic, American-style humor that kids can understand.
The storyline is simple and a bit cheesy, but it's hilarious. It's New Year's Eve, and Shmyak the cat is eagerly waiting for his presents from Santa. What if he hasn't been good enough throughout the year and doesn't deserve a gift? Shmyak decides to be the best cat he can be from now on...
And then the story goes on about Shmyak's misadventures as he tries to become the best cat and get the biggest present. Who doesn't want the biggest present, right?
I've got to say, Shmyak is as amazing as ever. The antics are hilarious, sometimes a bit silly, and he's always getting in the way, but he's not giving up on being good. The whole story is perfectly complemented by the illustrations.
The pictures are funny too. They're bright, beautiful, and so characteristic. I love the style of the artist. The New Year's atmosphere is captured perfectly. The Christmas trees, presents, and all the other details are so whimsical, but in the best possible way.
I think the kid enjoyed the story, but I enjoyed it more. I was laughing because kids can be so silly sometimes, just like in the book.
It's a bit weird reading about New Year's when you're surrounded by blooming flowers and green grass, but on the Kuban, it's not uncommon to see odontites blooming on December 31st. Only books can create that New Year's feeling.
I loved the story. The plot is simple, but Shmyak is usually bought for kids, so they should enjoy it. It's a good, funny, and entertaining book. Shmyak is, as always, fantastic. The illustrations are beautiful. I have to admit that I'm not a fan of big books. I prefer smaller ones. Unfortunately, there aren't any small New Year's books available.
I highly recommend this book. I don't regret buying it.
Happy shopping and a wonderful atmosphere!!!
