I was heartbroken when my first dog, a Yorkie girl, passed away after a tough surgery. The experience left me crying every day, and then I got really sick. It was a tough time, but as I reflected on it, I realized life just wasn't the same without a furry friend.

I started researching different breeds, and my heart went out to the Shetland Sheepdog - they're so smart and gorgeous. I got in touch with a breeder, learned a lot about the breed, and was really drawn to them.

First days in the new home
We named the little guy Kai, and at first, he was a bit down about leaving his mom and siblings. But he quickly settled into our home, especially after meeting our cat, Ryzhik.

Kai's favorite toys were socks, slippers, and shoes - he'd carry them around proudly. Occasionally, we'd find chewed-up laces and shredded shoelaces.

Shenanigans and walks
I have to admit, things weren't all smooth sailing. With my work schedule, I only managed to take him out for a walk three times a week, and there was a nine-hour gap between our morning and evening strolls. Kai was completely resistant to going on his potty training, and it took him a while to get used to going outside. For about eight months, this little troublemaker did his business at home. He also had a thing for unraveling everything and carrying around random objects. One time, he even managed to turn over a whole bucket of water.
Another issue we faced was picking up after him on the street. He'd always find some nasty stuff like bones, fish heads, and the like. I had to keep a close eye on him.

Kai was growing, learning, and getting better every day
As soon as we started taking him out on the street, Kai became the center of attention. People would stop and ask what breed he was, and older generations would immediately think of collies. The kids still call him a fox, and he loves them, especially when they're running around together. However, his enthusiasm often comes with a loud bark, so I make sure to warn the kids before we go for a run.

Grooming and feeding
Despite their thick and long coats, shelties don't require frequent baths. I just give them a good wipe down with a damp cloth when it's wet outside.
On the other hand, they do shed a lot, and it's not uncommon for them to leave hair all over the place. If you're particular about cleanliness, a sheltie might not be the best fit for you.
I remember when Kai was a pup, his soft undercoat would mat easily and I'd have to brush him at least once a week. But as he grew up and his coat got thicker, I've been able to go to every 1.5 to 2 weeks without any issues.
We feed Kai raw meat, offal, fish, and a bit of veggies. His appetite has always been crazy - I mean, I've seen him inhale his food in one sitting! I recall one time, when he was still on holistic food, I gave him way too much and the whole apartment was covered in a mess!

Ears
We didn't quite manage to get his ears to fold back the way they're supposed to. The breeder recommended using a mixture of flour and water to help, and it sort of worked. But Kai's always been a curious guy and would often perk up his ears, so I decided to just let him be. After all, we love him just the way he is!

Barking
I've read and heard that Shelties are super chatty and love to bark for no reason. I'm not sure if we're just lucky, but Kai's actually pretty quiet. He'll occasionally bark or whine if he hears something outside, but other than that, he's pretty chill. He'll whimper a bit when we're getting ready to leave, but that's about it. I asked our neighbors if they've ever heard him when we're not home, and they said he's actually pretty quiet too. Maybe it's because he's always got his feline buddy by his side!

As of now, Kai's 2 years and 3 months old.
They still love to just chill and snooze together like this with Ryzhik
My dog loves to snuggle up next to me at night, and he's always keeping an eye on me to make sure I'm comfortable.
When I leave the room, he's always waiting for me to come back, and he's always happy to see me.
It's hilarious to see him waiting for me at the door when I come home.
Sometimes, just like me, he loves to stare at the screen and get lost in whatever he's watching.
What I love about my dog is that he's always up for an adventure, no matter the weather. Whether it's playing fetch or going for a walk, he's always game. And the best part? He's always happy to have a drink of water whenever he needs it.
But for some reason, I think my dog loves winter the most. There's something about the snow and the cold that just makes him happy.
And let's be real, his adorable face is just the best. He loves to come up to me and nuzzle his head against my legs. It's just the sweetest thing.
The Verdict
I'm obsessed with my dog, and I think you will be too after reading this story. Feel free to ask me any questions you have, and I'll do my best to answer them.
