Hello everyone!
I often enjoy re-watching old Soviet films and sometimes even writing reviews about them. Service Romance has been waiting for its turn, and now that time has finally arrived.
So, Service Romance, 1976.
♥ Plot
This is a story about one Soviet collective and one office romance... I don't see the point in going into too much detail about the plot, as most people already know it. Although, I will make a few small references to some of the storylines.
Service Romance (1978, film) This film has been familiar to me since my earliest childhood. My mom used to watch it (like many other Soviet films) quite often, and I've been remembering its characters and story since I was a kid. Back then, everything was perceived differently.
Service Romance (1978, film) Nowadays, my opinion is different, of course.
Service Romance (1978, film) And, in my opinion, Service Romance is a masterpiece. Yes, it's an unusual, sometimes hard-to-understand film for modern viewers. But, nonetheless, it's a wonderful and worthwhile movie – for many reasons.
Service Romance (1978, film) I wouldn't say the film is funny, despite it being a comedy. It's a sweet, light, sometimes silly and sad film. But for me, it's not a comedy.
Office Romance (1978, film)I was really impressed by how the film's atmosphere was created. Given that it started out as a play, the transition to film was a unique one. I mean, how many movies can say they originated from a stage production? It's a testament to the power of storytelling.
Office Romance (1978, film)One thing that really stood out to me was the use of location shooting. Since the story takes place almost entirely in an office, the filmmakers had to get creative with their settings. And let me tell you, they did a great job of making it feel like a real workplace.
Office Romance (1978, film)The way the film uses natural settings to break up the office scenes is really effective. It adds a welcome respite from the monotony of the office environment, and helps to create a sense of balance in the story.
Office Romance (1978, film)The score is also worth mentioning - it perfectly captures the mood and tone of the film. It's not too overbearing, but it's definitely present and helps to enhance the viewing experience.
Office Romance (1978, film)I also appreciated the attention to period detail, from the hairstyles to the makeup to the wardrobe. It's amazing how much you can learn about a bygone era just by paying attention to these little things. It's a big part of what makes this film so charming and nostalgic.
A Romantic Comedy (1978, film)I've got to say, the acting in this movie is top-notch. The scene where Novoselcev and Kalugina have a romantic dinner is completely improvised. And let's be honest, the entire cast is fantastic.
A Romantic Comedy (1978, film)Okay, so let's talk about the main characters...
Kalugina. She's the director of the company and the main heroine. Essentially, she's a young woman, but she's all closed off and...well, that's the problem.
A Romantic Comedy (1978, film)
A Romantic Comedy (1978, film)Novoselcev, the senior statistician. He's a single dad trying to get a promotion and starts flirting with Kalugina, which leads to all sorts of chaos.
A Romantic Comedy (1978, film)Samokhvalov. He's Novoselcev's old friend from back in the day. He just got back from abroad and, honestly, his last name fits him perfectly. He's a real charmer, successful, and kind of calculating and self-serving.
Office Romance (1978, film)Olga Petrovna Ryzhova. She's also a colleague of the above-mentioned heroes. Samohvalov's first love. A close friend of Novoseltsev.
Office Romance (1978, film)Oh, that first love... Years later, Olga sees her childhood sweetheart and, despite having their own families, she's totally blown away. This situation left a mark on my heart, maybe even more than the main characters' situation.
Office Romance (1978, film)There are no right or wrong here. Samohvalov's no saint, either. But Olga's a good person.
I also read that the basis for this storyline was real...
Office Romance (1978, film)♥ Instead of a conclusion
Office Romance is a masterpiece and a classic of its time. Will it resonate with a modern viewer? That's another question. But I've always had a soft spot for this movie.
Office Romance (1978, film)My rating is 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend watching and re-watching.
Thanks for reading, ♥ Neonya
