A Mixed Bag for My Little One

summarizeEditor's Summary

I got the 'School of Seven Bells 0+' book set for my kid when he was five months old, but he wasn't really into it. He was in a teething phase and loved putting everything in his mouth, so the books collected dust for a while. It wasn't until he turned one that he finally started enjoying the series. Now we're using them, but it's been a mixed bag ever since. I'm not sure if my kid is just a bit behind or if other kids are naturally more advanced. The books are colorful and engaging, but some concepts are a bit too advanced for my kid's age group. I wish they had more interactive elements, like flaps or buttons to press. Overall, the books are sturdy and well-made, but they're a bit pricey.

We got the 'School of Seven Bells 0+' book set when my kid was just five months old. I figured he'd love the colorful pictures, but boy was I wrong. At that age, he was going through a teething phase and was obsessed with putting everything in his mouth. He'd try to grab the book from me and shove it in his mouth, so I had to put the books aside for later. I thought he'd be interested in them when he was a bit older, but even then, he wasn't really into them. He'd rather crawl, play with toys, and learn new skills like sitting and standing. He'd just scatter the books around, not even letting me open them. It wasn't until he turned one that he finally started enjoying the series.
I'm not sure if my kid is just a bit behind or if other kids are naturally more advanced. We started using these books after he turned one, and it's been a mixed bag ever since.
There are 12 books in the series, and I'll give you the lowdown on each one:
Book 1: Baby Rhymes
The cardboard insert in this book was a hit with my kid. He loved matching the pictures on the insert with the ones in the book. I think this is a great way to introduce kids to rhyming and word recognition.
Book 2: What's Everyone Doing?
This book was a favorite of mine too. The pictures showed animals doing different things, and my kid would repeat and show me what they were doing. It's a great way to encourage language development and social skills.
Book 3: My First Book
This book is similar to 'What's Everyone Doing?' – it shows animals doing different things. My kid liked it, but I'm not sure why they included two almost identical books in the same series. Maybe it's just a matter of personal preference?
Book 4: Kitty-Kitty
This book features traditional nursery rhymes about cats. My kid loved listening to the rhymes and finding the cat on the pictures. It's a great way to introduce kids to music and rhythm.
Book 5: Colorful Pictures
Unfortunately, these books didn't really catch my kid's attention. I guess I just missed the boat on teaching him about vision training. Maybe it's just not the right time for this type of learning?
Book 6: What Color is This?
This book is a great one. It groups objects by color, and each page is its own color. My kid quickly learned to distinguish colors and remember their names. It's a great way to introduce kids to color recognition and vocabulary.
Book 7: Shapes
I love how this book helps my kid learn and differentiate between shapes. He picked up the circle in no time, but the square took a bit longer. It's a great way to introduce kids to geometry and spatial awareness.
Book 8: Picture Puzzles
The book suggests cutting pictures in half and having your kid match the pairs. Unfortunately, our book fell apart quickly, so we didn't get to test it out. Maybe it's just a matter of quality control?
Book 9: My Kid's Favorites
This one was a hit with my kid. The book features common children's toys, and we have most of them at home. My kid recognized them and pointed them out. It's a great way to encourage language development and social skills.
Book 10: What's That Sound?
The book labels all the objects with baby talk names, which was a bit confusing for my kid. However, they loved looking at the pictures and identifying familiar objects. It's a great way to introduce kids to auditory skills and vocabulary.
Book 11: Day and Night
My kid didn't quite get this one, but they enjoyed looking at the pictures. Maybe it's just a matter of developmental readiness?
Book 12: Fun Dance
The book features illustrations of animals from popular nursery rhymes and fairy tales. My kid found it interesting to look at. It's a great way to introduce kids to music and movement.
Along with the books, we also got a diploma, but my kid didn't quite understand what it was at this age. Maybe it's just a matter of developmental readiness?
Overall, I'd say the books are okay, but we probably wouldn't have bought them if we knew they wouldn't be useful until my kid was a bit older. We ended up passing on the next series, 1+, since they didn't seem necessary for this age group.
I think the series has some great ideas and concepts, but the execution could be improved. Maybe it's just a matter of personal preference?
As a parent, it's always a challenge to find the right materials for your child's learning and development. I hope this review helps other parents make an informed decision about this series.
