I was strolling down Bolshaya Pokrovskaya in Nizhny Novgorod on September 27, 2021, when I stumbled upon a quirky little character - a chubby cat. It had a Sberbank QR code on its paw, and you could scan it to get a financial consultation. So, the cat's an expert in financial matters.
The 'Cat on a Bench' sculpture is a genre sculpture created by sculptor Alexei Shchitov. The metal cat figure appeared in the city center in September 2021 and was tied to Nizhny Novgorod's 800th anniversary and Sberbank's 180th anniversary.
A tradition has formed among locals and tourists of rubbing the cat's right paw 'for good luck' in financial matters.
The cat quickly won over the hearts of Nizhny Novgorod residents and visitors, and they started rubbing its paws for good luck in finances. Who wouldn't trust it?
It's done in a playful technique, very cute and cheerful.
In summer, people throw daisies into its paw, and in winter, they tie a scarf around it. Winters can be brutal.
Children just can't walk by.
I'm not a kid, but I never walk by either.
It's great to see everything's okay with my kitty
My kitty loves the Big Pokrovsky and Dmitrievsky towers of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin.
My little kitty's smiling and trying to make friends with everyone.
Trams are running nearby. I'm on October Street, which intersects with Big Pokrovsky Street.
It's really convenient to have a little spot like this.Despite its small size (80 cm), my kitty's easily visible from a distance – as long as you know where to look.
On Big Pokrovsky Street, there are usually a lot of people, so it's easy to miss my kitty in the crowd.
But in the winter, when it's cold, there are fewer people around.
People are interested in my kitty all year round.
This is probably the first cat-themed street art in Nizhny Novgorod.
I've seen some cats in my time, but this one's got a knack for finance. It even has its own TikTok channel!
Reminded me of another cat that's got a thing for pigeons - it's perched on the facade of the University Theater building.
Cat hunting pigeons on Bolshaya Pokrovskaya, August 31, 2012And yes, there's another one - the one that's a prototype for a millionaire's life, at the Fish Market on Rozhdestvenskaya Street.
Cat. Sculpture "Fish Market" on Kozhevnyaya Street, Nizhny Novgorod. February 5, 2026Cat. Sculpture "Fish Market" on Kozhevnyaya Street, Nizhny Novgorod. February 5, 2026I've since found out that Alexei Shchitov created many street art sculptures in Nizhny Novgorod - on Kozhevnyaya Street and Bolshaya Pokrovskaya.
There's a bright red armchair nearby.
You can sit on it or just chill next to the cat.
Just a short walk from our feline friend is "The Happy Goat". I've already told you about it.
As the sun sets, the lights come on.And both Big Pokrovskaya and our feline friend look even more mysterious and romantic.
There's also a stunning building of the State Bank nearby.
And, of course, there's another art installation - a tram.
The violinist.
Alexei Shchitov is the author of several sculptures in Nizhny Novgorod. Among them are six works on Kozhevennaya Street, as well as a monument to Peter the Great near the Zachatyeyskaya Tower of the Kremlin.
I have to say, this little cat has a bit of a love-hate relationship going on.
Travelers and kids just love it.
I've gotta say, some locals think it's a bit too flashy for a place like Bolshaya Pokrovskaya, where they should have more serious and worthy sculptures.
But hey, it's already become a thing - people often say, 'Let's meet up at the cat.'
And the fact that it's been polished to a shine, well, that's just one of the reasons people love it - it's one of the most tactile street art pieces out there.
