Purina One High Salmon & Wheat Cat Food for Spayed Cats and Neutered Cats

I've tried a few different cat foods for my spayed cat, and this Purina One stuff is a winner. The high salmon and wheat content is gentle on her system, and she loves the taste. It's a solid choice for cats like mine who need a little extra care.

Cooper's Not a Fan of Purina's Salmon Cat Food

summarizeEditor's Summary

I'm not a fan of Purina's salmon cat food for my 10-month-old chunky cat Cooper. After a week of feeding him this food, I've noticed some concerning issues. The high corn content and lack of vitamins and minerals are major red flags. I'm also not a fan of the artificial flavoring and low animal-derived protein content. This food falls short compared to other high-quality cat foods on the market.

Introduction
My cat Cooper is a chunky 10-month-old fella who weighs around 4 kilograms. He's neutered and lives indoors with me. As a responsible cat parent, I always make sure to provide him with a balanced diet that meets his nutritional needs.
Hi, I'm Cooper! I usually buy Cooper dry cat food called Blick with chicken for neutered cats, but this time I grabbed a small pack of Purina with salmon for neutered cats from the supermarket. The packaging looked pretty good, with a zipper lock that's super convenient. I was curious to see how Cooper would react to this new food.
This was the first time Cooper tried Purina, and I was eager to observe his reaction. I wanted to know if he would like the taste and texture of the food.
Product Characteristics
The packaging has changed from shiny to matte with a greenish tint, but I like the new look. The kibbles are small, all the same size, triangular, and light brown. They're crunchy, which I'm sure Cooper enjoys. The smell, however, is pretty strong, like dried anchovies - not exactly the most pleasant aroma.
I took a closer look at the ingredients and noticed that the first ingredient is salmon, followed by poultry meal, which is probably a processed product. Then there's wheat, which is a lot, almost as much as salmon. I'm a bit concerned that this might put a strain on Cooper's pancreas. I also don't like that there's dried yeast, which can be a problem for some cats. On the other hand, I appreciate that there are no preservatives or artificial colors. One thing I wish they had is more vitamins in the mix, and some yucca to reduce the smell after Cooper uses the litter box.
Reaction from neighborhood cats and my cat to Purina
On my way home from the store, I met two cats, one was a kitten, and the other was an adult. I sprinkled some of the food for them, and the kitten immediately gobbled it up, while the adult cat sniffed it and walked away, then came back and looked at it again before leaving. I had to finish feeding the kitten, which he enjoyed.
I started to wonder if Cooper would like this food. What if he refuses to eat it? I was relieved when I gave some to Cooper, and he immediately started munching on it, eating everything I gave him. In the following days, his appetite didn't decrease, and he ate it eagerly.
Influence of the food on my cat's health
It's hard to say how well this food suits Cooper after just a few days, but I won't be buying it again. I usually look for food with high animal-derived protein content and lower phosphorus and calcium levels. I also prefer grain-free options. One obvious change I've noticed is the volume of Cooper's stool. It's increased both in quantity and size. This suggests that the food isn't being digested well, resulting in a bigger output. The smell after he uses the litter box has also worsened.
Fortunately, there was no diarrhea, constipation, or vomiting. Cooper's stool remains regular. There was no itching or allergic reaction to the food.
After considering the pros and cons, I decided to share my experience with other cat parents. If you're looking for a new food for your cat, I recommend considering the following factors: high animal-derived protein content, lower phosphorus and calcium levels, and grain-free options. It's also essential to monitor your cat's health and adjust their diet accordingly.
Convenient packaging with a zipper lock No preservatives or artificial colors Salmon is the first ingredient
Strong smell like dried anchovies Poultry meal as the second ingredient High wheat content Dried yeast No vitamins or yucca in the mix Increased stool volume and smell
That's all for now.
Wishing you and your kitties all the best 😻
