Purina One High Chicken & Whole Grains Dry Cat Food

My cat's a picky eater, but she goes crazy for this stuff. I've tried a bunch of different cat foods, but Purina One Dry Cat Food with High Chicken and Whole Grains is the one she always comes back to. It's made with real chicken and whole grains, so you know you're getting high-quality ingredients. The protein from the chicken is top-notch, and it really shows in my cat's overall health and happiness. Plus, the whole grains give her the fiber and nutrients she needs to stay happy and healthy.

Why I Ditched Purina for My Bengal - A Cautionary Tale

summarizeEditor's Summary

As a cat lover and first-time Bengal owner, I was stoked to welcome a new furry friend into our home. We started our six-month-old Bengal boy on Purina One, but after some research and consultation with our vet, we decided to switch to a premium food. I'm sharing my honest thoughts on why we ditched Purina and what we're looking for in a high-quality cat food. With Purina One, we were drawn to the affordable upfront cost and convenient packaging with a secure closure. Plus, it's widely available in pet stores and has a well-established brand reputation. However, after some digging, we realized that it's not the best choice for long-term feeding needs. The lower protein content and potential presence of fillers and by-products raised some red flags. Our vet recommended switching to a premium food with higher protein content and fewer fillers. So, we made the switch and are loving the results. If you're a cat owner considering Purina One, it's essential to weigh the pros and cons and consider your cat's individual needs. In this review, I'll break down the good, the bad, and the ugly of Purina One, and share our experience with switching to a premium food.

Hey there, fellow cat lovers!
xa0
This summer, my family and I welcomed a new furry friend into our home - a beautiful Bengal boy. Our daughter had been begging for a pet, and we finally decided to give in. She'd had experience with turtles and a parrot before, but I've always been a cat person. I grew up with cats, and I just love their independence and affectionate nature. We'd never had a boy cat before, and let me tell you, it's been an eye-opener. I'll write a separate review about the differences between boy and girl cats another time.
My vet's opinion on Purina OneSo, to give you the short version, we have a six-month-old Bengal boy who's already stolen our hearts. We started him on Purina One, which our breeder recommended. She actually fed the kittens the same food as their mom, so we just went with what we knew. Luckily, it worked out, and we're now switching to a more premium food. I wanted to share my thoughts on Purina One with high levels of chicken and whole grains.

Purina Onewith chickenManufacturer: Nestle RussiaThere are a few factories, so check the package for the codeYou can buy it at most supermarkets and onlinePrice: around 1205 rubles for a 3 kg bag on Ozonxa0
Packaging

The packaging is really eye-catching and memorable. I used to get Purina One mixed up with Perfect Fit all the time - the names and manufacturers were all confused in my head. But once I got used to it, I started buying bigger bags. The smaller 700g bags were a bit of a hassle, but the bigger ones are really convenient. The package itself is quite nice, with a bright design and a handle on the side. You can see the ingredients, manufacturer, and all that on the side panel.

I'm not gonna sugarcoat it - this product isn't perfect. There's one thing that's a major concern for us: the animal fat content. Our cat's not supposed to have high amounts of it, and when I compared the ingredients of Purina and Grandorf, I noticed that Grandorf has fish oil added to it.
Here's a comparison of the two products' ingredients for reference:

Opinion from a Vet
We took our boy to see a few different vets, but one of them in particular had some strong words about Purina and Perfect Fit. They advised us to switch to something else, as many Bengal cats (like ours) have issues with their kidneys and liver when eating Purina.
Purina granulesOur vet recommended Grandorf, Alfa Pet, and other premium brands, but we found that Purina is actually cheaper in some stores than Viscach, which I think is a pretty terrible option for our cat.

Our Cat's Diet
We started with Purina and then left our cat with his grandma for three weeks. While we were away, she started transitioning him to Grandorf mixed with Purina. After that, our cat wasn't too enthusiastic about eating Purina anymore. He'd eat it until he knew there were other, better options available. Once he tried the higher-quality food, he lost interest in Purina altogether.
Now we're on a specialized diet, after getting a vet's adviceI've gotta say, my mom's Bengal cat, Amur, was a real handful. He'd steal food right off the table, and it ended up giving him diarrhea. I think it was something greasy he ate, because his liver function tests were all off. But if we can get his liver back on track by sticking to this specialized diet, then we've got a problem with his kidneys.
The vet said it could be a genetic issue or a result of eating low-quality food. Either way, she's adamant that we ditch the Purina. Now we're feeding Amur Royal Canin Renal, which is basically the most expensive thing I've ever seen.
Purina UAN for BengalsBesides the Renal food, we're giving him meds and supplements to help his kidneys and liver out.

The Bottom Line
xa0
I wouldn't recommend Purina One for anyone, especially Bengal owners. They're prone to kidney and digestive issues, and the vet said that almost every cat on Purina ends up with kidney problems eventually. She said it's pretty common for older cats to have kidney issues, and almost all of them are on this type of food - Purina, Perfect Fit, Viscat, and Kitekat.
xa0
So, based on our experience, I'd say Purina One is a no-go.
