My Take on Nauchnaya Zhizn: A Magazine That's Lost Its Groove

summarizeEditor's Summary

I've been reading Nauchnaya Zhizn for years, but it's just not the same anymore. I used to love it when I was a kid, but now I find myself underwhelmed and uninterested. The content's become pretty questionable, and I'm not the only one who's noticed. My parents used to love it too, but even they're starting to lose patience. I mean, the latest issue I read had a piece on the 'benefits' of harassment that left me scratching my head. That's just not the kind of thing I want to see in a magazine that's supposed to be about science and learning. It's like they're trying to be edgy or something, but it just comes across as weird and off-putting.

I've been reading Nauchnaya Zhizn for years, and I gotta say, it just isn't the same anymore. My parents have been subscribers for ages, and I used to devour the articles on science, history, and space when I was a kid. But lately, I've been feeling underwhelmed. I'll often flip through the magazine when I visit my parents, but it's just not engaging like it used to be.
One reason for this is that the magazine's started publishing some pretty questionable stuff. Take, for instance, the 2015 piece by Dmitry Zhukov on the 'benefits' of harassment. Let's just say it's a real head-scratcher. The author seems to be suggesting that harassment is a natural part of human behavior, and that women should be flattered by it. Yeah, no thanks.
Dmitry Zhukov sums it up:
Thus, the man's advances towards a woman, which are now called 'harassment' in the West, have a deep biological significance. This form of behavior allows a woman to decide whether she wants to deal with a particular man; whether she wants to be with him long enough to get married; whether she wants to have children with him. Finally, attention from men boosts a woman's self-esteem, and that's the best way to prevent depression.
It's like the editor of the magazine hasn't even done their due diligence. I mean, who publishes a piece on social psychology written by a biologist, and on physics written by a philosopher? It's just weird.
And then there are the articles that are just plain boring. Like the one in the 2019 issue on 'Surviving the Workplace.' I mean, come on - the biggest threat to our health at the office is a sedentary lifestyle and not enough ventilation? Give me a break.
Working is bad for your health, no wonder there's a whole branch of medicine dedicated to occupational hazards. What dangers lurk in the office, where there are no toxic emissions, loud noises, or vibrations? And how can a regular office drone deal with these problems?
But here's the thing - there are some interesting articles in the magazine. I enjoyed the piece by Maximov on the origins of surnames, and the one by Pervushina on the Russian language. And the puzzles by Ashkinazi and S'yanova are always a delight. However, I wouldn't shell out the cash for a subscription. There are plenty of free online resources that cover the same topics in a more engaging way.
So, would I recommend Nauchnaya Zhizn to my friends? Maybe - it's worth a browse, but don't expect to be blown away. I'd say it's a solid 3 out of 5 stars, but only because there are some good pieces hidden in there.
I've been reading Nauchnaya Zhizn for years, and I've noticed a decline in quality. The articles used to be engaging and informative, but now they often feel like a chore to read.
Take, for example, the 2015 piece on harassment. The author's argument is flawed, and it's clear that they haven't done their research. It's disappointing to see a magazine like Nauchnaya Zhizn publish such a poorly written article.
On the other hand, there are some gems hidden within the magazine. The piece by Maximov on surnames is fascinating, and the puzzles by Ashkinazi and S'yanova are always a delight. However, these highlights aren't enough to make me want to subscribe.
I'd say that Nauchnaya Zhizn is a mixed bag. It's worth checking out, but don't expect to be blown away. If you're looking for a magazine that will engage and inform you, there are better options out there.
