My Wild Ride with Mollies: A Fishkeeper's Humbling Adventure

summarizeEditor's Summary

I'll never forget the day I decided to start my aquarium journey with Mollies. These little fish are a great choice for beginners, and they're surprisingly affordable. I mean, I got two fish for the price of one, which was a total steal - 75 rubles per fish, and it was money well spent. Plus, they're not fin-nippers, so I don't have to worry about other fish getting hurt. They're really active and fun to watch, especially when they're swimming together. I've had my Mollies for a while now, and I've learned a thing or two about what makes them tick. They're not picky eaters, and they love the usual flakes (Tetra). They're also super curious, and when you approach the aquarium, they swim up to the glass. I've even trained them to come up to the glass when I feed them - it's pretty cool.

I'll never forget the day I decided to start my aquarium journey with Mollies. It was a chilly winter evening, and I was looking for a way to brighten up the place. I'd been reading about them online, and I thought, why not start with Mollies?
Next day, I headed to Aquariumistics and picked up an aquarium, some decorations, and two Mollies - a male and a female. The price for these fish was really reasonable, 75 rubles per fish. And let me tell you, it was money well spent. I mean, I got two fish for the price of one, which was a great value for the money.
A few days after setting up the aquarium, the new inhabitants settled in. They weren't picky eaters and loved the usual flakes (Tetra). They're also quite curious, and when you approach the aquarium, they swim up to the glass to check you out. The male started swimming alongside the female, sometimes not letting her swim, and other times racing each other. As a result, after a couple of weeks, I noticed the female had gotten a bit plump. And then, the unexpected happened - she gave birth to 14 live young!
I moved the young ones to a separate aquarium (had to buy another one in a hurry). It was crazy to see how fast they grew - after two weeks, they'd developed their color and were swimming like pros. I was amazed at how quickly they developed. I mean, it's like they went from babies to pros in no time.
I'll be keeping the young ones separate until they're about 1.5 cm long, so the parents don't eat them. It's a good thing I got two separate aquariums, or I'd have had to get creative with their housing. I was a bit worried about overcrowding, but thankfully I had a backup plan.
So, I ended up with 16 fish in two months, which is pretty convenient and cost-effective. The value for money was great, and I'm happy with my decision to start with Mollies. I mean, what's not to love about a fish that can multiply like crazy? Plus, I got to learn a thing or two about fish breeding and aquarium maintenance.
