Frank Tjiles' Möbius Strip is a Wild Ride I Don't Want to Untangle

summarizeEditor's Summary

I went into Frank Tjiles' Möbius Strip expecting a wild ride, and boy, did I get it. The story's a complex web of visions, murders, and unexplained events that'll leave you scratching your head. As a special effects makeup artist for horror movies, Tjiles brings a unique perspective to the table, but it's not all good news. The pacing's a bit wonky, and some of the descriptions are straight-up disturbing. Still, if you're a fan of mystery and suspense, you'll likely devour this book in one sitting. Just be prepared for a convoluted plot that'll keep you up at night, trying to untangle the threads. Tjiles' writing's engaging, and his style's easy to follow, but the characters' motivations can be a bit unclear at times, which is frustrating. The ending's a bit of a letdown, feeling rushed and unsatisfying. The book's not for the faint of heart – be prepared for some graphic content. Overall, Möbius Strip's a thought-provoking, mind-bending mystery that'll keep you guessing until the very end.

A Wild Ride That's Hard to Follow
Telling you what this book is about in two words is tough. It's got a lot of different stuff mixed together, which ultimately results in something that's hard to digest. But I'll try.
Frank Tjiles is a special effects makeup artist for horror movies, and his unusual profession isn't a coincidence. His life has been like a horror movie since childhood, with visions of the future that include tragic events happening to different people. These visions always come true, and he can't change anything.
The blurb is indeed intriguing! Vic Marshall is a young police officer starting his career, who gets assigned to a team investigating gruesome murders. He really wants to fit in with the team and prove himself, so he takes on any lead to solve the case. When the enigmatic Stefan Kiszmet shows up, claiming to know what will happen next and who will be the next victim, it completely changes the team's approach and theories.
I love the theme of time travel, flashbacks, and the like, and this book seemed promising at first. But ultimately, it's just 'seemed promising.' Let's break it down.
The Crazy Plot is in Charge
The concept behind Möbius Strip is great and strong, with a well-structured plot that initially makes sense. However, as the transitions from the past to the future become more frequent, the narrative descends into outright madness.
It's worth noting that the author, Frank Tjiles, does warn readers at the beginning to pay attention to the timeline, which is indicated at the start of each chapter. But it doesn't help.
This book clearly doesn't belong in the same league as King and Granger's works.
What's Möbius and its Strip Got to Do with Anything?
Amidst all the chaos, around the middle of the book, there's an attempt to explain what Möbius strip is and its relevance to the story. A physicist is introduced, trying to explain something abstract to one of the main characters, which takes up several pages and only adds to the confusion.
I was familiar with Möbius strip, but I still couldn't grasp how it relates to time travel, especially the aspects covered in this book.
Reading Individual Chapters is a Real Turn-Off
Another major downside is the numerous graphic and unpleasant moments in the book, including the gruesome details of the crimes, the lingering smells, and other disturbing elements that could have been left out. These scenes make it hard to continue reading certain chapters.
Women are Portrayed in a Negative Light
I didn't see this observation in other reviews, but personally, I felt that the author, Frank Tjiles, seems to genuinely dislike women in Möbius Strip. The female characters are portrayed in a very negative light, making it hard not to feel sorry for both the men and women in the story.
One of the women is depicted as a two-faced 'villain in a skirt,' ready to betray her husband at any moment, while the other is shown as an airheaded, unintellectual woman who married a police officer without knowing what she was getting into. Her sole concern is how unhappy and lonely she is, and how she craves attention. It's all quite unpleasant and contrived.
Despite the author's warning about the complexity of the plot, it doesn't help...
The Author Seems Exhausted at the End
Given the convoluted plot, you'd expect a grand finale. Unfortunately, the ending is a letdown. It feels like the author got tired (or confused) and just stopped where they were.
In short, it's a complete letdown. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone. I genuinely can't imagine who would enjoy it in its entirety, especially among my book-loving friends.
I was expecting a thrilling ride with Möbius Strip, but what I got was a confusing mess that's hard to follow. The author's attempt to explain the Möbius strip and its relevance to the story only adds to the confusion. The graphic and unpleasant moments in the book make it hard to continue reading, and the negative portrayal of women is a major turn-off.
Overall, Möbius Strip is a disappointing read that fails to deliver on its promising premise. If you're a fan of horror and time travel, you might want to look elsewhere for a more engaging and coherent story.
