My Frustrating Experience with Magnit: When Rewards Become a Burden

Magnet App

I've tried a bunch of apps to stay organized, but Magnet App is the one that actually works for me. It's got all the basics covered: notes, to-do lists, and reminders. I use it to keep track of work projects, personal tasks, and even grocery lists. It's super easy to use and syncs across all my devices.

My Frustrating Experience with Magnit: When Rewards Become a Burden

summarizeEditor's Summary

I've been a loyal Magnit customer for ages, but their loyalty program has turned into a major headache. I was stoked about the bonus points at first, but it all went downhill when I started missing out on cashback because I didn't show the card every time I shopped. The app's got some nice features, but the rules are super confusing and they're always blocking my account for no reason. It's like they're trying to make it harder for me to get rewards. I've tried joining the clubs and showing the card, but it's just not worth the hassle. I've been dealing with this for months now, and it's getting old. I've had to contact customer support multiple times, and it's just been a waste of time. They're always saying the same thing, 'you need to show the card more often' or 'you're not shopping in the right category.' It's like they're not even listening to me. I'm starting to think that the loyalty program is more of a burden than a benefit. I'm not sure how much longer I can keep using it.

I've been a loyal Magnit customer for a ridiculously long time, so I was an early adopter of their loyalty program. I was really stoked about the bonus points I got.
Then I downloaded the app, too, because I did most of my shopping there anyway.
Everyone around me was getting my recommendations and explanations, and I was basically a superfan. Now it's kind of hilarious.By the way, when you first sign up, make sure to choose your top three categories – that's where you'll get the highest cashback. Just go ahead and use it right away, you'll see why.
Show the card all the time, or you'll miss out on the next month's cashback percentage.
Next up, I'd recommend joining the clubs – they're on the main page, at the bottom of the app.
Those will give you more bonus points, just make sure to activate them and not forget.
I was getting so good at getting bonuses, I started to feel like I was taking advantage of the system. But then I noticed that sometimes they wouldn't even give me the cashback I was promised. Even two years ago, I wrote to customer support about it when my personal offer said I'd get cashback on chips, but it never showed up. Turns out, chips don't qualify for the 'chips' category.
After that, I stopped trusting Magnit and tried not to make unnecessary purchases just for the sake of cashback, which might not even come through.
Anyway, my next tip is to keep an eye out for special offers in-store – those usually have coupons for specific products, and you can get them at a discount.
In general, the app has a lot of pros. But there are some major cons – and they're pretty annoying.
I found out that bonuses are only awarded for five purchases per day. Yeah, it's not like you're usually shopping that much, but life's unpredictable. I work near Magnit sometimes, so my breakfast, lunch, and grocery runs happen a few times a day. You know, something slips your mind and you end up buying it again.
👉👉👉👉👉👉 No way. You've got to cut back on shopping and not forget, or you'll be left with nothing.
I had a pretty annoying experience recently. I was at the checkout, and there were a few conscripts in front of me making purchases. They didn't have cards, and they were short on cash. I felt for them, so I gave them my card and added a bit of cash. You know, my son was in the army, so I understood.
✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌❞ Apparently, I wasn't supposed to do that! I broke the rules, it seems.
So, my card got blocked a week later.During that week, I broke the rules a couple more times. Although, this one's a gray area.
❞❞❞❞❞❞❞❞❞❞❞❞❞❞❞❞❞❞ If three people make a big purchase together, but the card can only be split one way, it seems like they're all breaking the loyalty rules?
There's nothing in the rules about that.
The second case doesn't break any human rights, but it goes against Magnit's laws.
The guy owed me money, and he didn't have internet, so he just paid for my purchase with his card. There were no other reasons that fit the block criteria.
The customer support team responded clearly.
I wonder how they even noticed? And if a husband and wife aren't married, can they still give each other's cards?
And if someone doesn't have a card, don't even think about helping them! The service costs the same as the number of bonuses on your card.
Also, keep in mind that even serious Magnit customers aren't exactly their favorite people.
I've got a friend who runs a cafe, and she shops at Magnit every day, spending big sums of money. They don't ban her, so I asked why not. Apparently, it's all clear-cut.
🤷🤷🤷🤷 Double standards?I've been waiting for three months for tech support to get back to me. That's it, I've had enough.
Another issue I had was with a woman in the store who tried to scam her points. They told her her card was blocked, and she got all upset, saying they were accusing her of some infraction and blocking over 2k points she'd been saving for a year. She left her shopping and stormed out.
That's when I decided to leave too.

After taking screenshots and writing this review, I uninstalled the app. Luckily, there are plenty of competing stores now, so I'll be looking into those.
I wouldn't recommend this one, though.
