A Love-Hate Relationship with M.Video: 5 Stories of Shopping Triumphs and Fails

summarizeEditor's Summary

I've been shopping at M.Video for longer than I've known my own mom. This retail chain has been a part of my life for years, and I've seen it grow and change over time. From the early days of shopping at their Rostov store to the present day, I've experienced both triumphs and fails. In this review, I'll share five stories that sum up my love-hate relationship with M.Video. I'll give you the lowdown on what it's like to shop at M.Video, from the good to the bad. With a huge selection of products, friendly sales staff, and regular promotions, M.Video has a lot to offer. But with crowded stores, higher prices, and slow customer support, it's not all sunshine and rainbows. I'll also cover M.Video's return policy, shipping options, and more. So, if you're thinking of shopping at M.Video, keep reading to get the inside scoop.

My relationship with M.Video is a long one - I've been shopping at this retail chain longer than I've known my own mom.
Even Perekrestok and Letyashovka came into my life a few years later than M.Video.
I could've stopped there, given it five stars, and called it a day, but I'm feeling nostalgic today.
Story one: The introduction.
It was the spring of 2006. I was living in Rostov at the time, and the first M.Video store opened up on Krasnoarmeyskaya. Right next to it were these posh Hot Tobych building materials. I mean, posh for Rostov, anyway. Back then, people preferred buying stuff at the market, so the prices in the store seemed astronomical.
The friendly sales staff and the snooty security guards made buying a carpet a real treat.
M.Video review
And then, just across from them, a new electronics store opened up. At the time, their main competitor, Eldorado, was already going strong, but had a bit of a shady reputation. Apparently, they sold counterfeit and low-quality electronics, even after repairs.
I had a bad experience with Eldorado that still haunts me to this day. It was around the holidays when my mom and I decided to buy a small TV for my grandma. The salesperson was raving about Rubin, saying they'd made a comeback and this new TV was a real gem. We were in a rush because it was close to Christmas, and we ended up making a hasty purchase. But our excitement was short-lived. It turned out the TV had a major audio defect... and we had to deal with the hassle of returning it, which was a real nightmare.
Fast forward 30 years, and that experience still puts me off from shopping at Eldorado. Even though they've merged with M.Video and their catalog is pretty similar, I still prefer to avoid their stores.
Choosing a washing machine is still a good option
We headed to M.Video because their website was a game-changer. They had a detailed catalog, and you could browse and compare models from the comfort of your own home. Plus, you could read reviews and tips on how to choose the right appliance.
I was dead set on getting a fancy front-loading washing machine, but after reading an article on the website, we decided to go with a top-loading model instead.
This was an Electrolux machine made in Europe, and I didn't see a machine of that quality again until 2017, when I visited Estonia. Five years later, my mom and I wanted to upgrade to a more modern machine with lots of features, but we discovered that the Electrolux models sold in Russia had really taken a hit in terms of build quality and materials.
I used to think Samsung was a fly-by-night company, and my heart was set on a Miele.
I also learned about 'restocking fees' for the first time when I bought the washing machine. I knew what it was, but I didn't fully understand the implications until now.
I wonder how many restocking fees salespeople would be 'accidentally' charging customers for these days, considering the prices of some tech models are over 100,000 rubles.
The consultant we worked with suggested we buy the machine with a 10% employee discount. The machine cost 24,000 rubles, and we got a 2,400 ruble discount. Of that, 1,000 rubles went to the consultant, and the rest was our discount. The manager saw this scam just as we were about to hand over the money and promised to get the salesperson to refund the full amount. We did end up getting the discount, but I'm still not sure if the consultant was fired or if it was just a warning.
The second story: shopping is getting intense.
Going shopping these days usually means heading to the mall to browse stores, try on clothes, and sniff out new perfumes at the Golden Apple...
You could spend hours staring at three things - fire, water, and catalogs for small household appliances
Back in 2007, my mom and I were like total small household appliance enthusiasts. Every weekend, we'd drive to the store on Red Army Street and buy something. One week it was a vacuum, the next a trimmer...
My first trimmer purchase was a total disaster. We didn't pay attention to the power rating and went for the model with the most attachments. Girls, am I right...
I also bought my first licensed computer game here. Oh, those lovely pointless days spent playing Sims2...
One day, I went to M.Video to check out a vertical vacuum, and that's when I got hooked on Dysons. Warning: shopping can be bad for your wallet.
The store eventually switched to a 24/7 schedule and expanded, pushing out Hot Tobych. In the middle of the store, a café popped up. Oh, the gods, civilization had finally arrived!
What struck me was the tiny café area - just a couple of tables, with a fake flower in a vase and - talk about a blast from the past! - a vending machine for coffee and another for chocolates. Fast forward to today, and you'll find these coffee machines everywhere in the city, but back then they seemed like a futuristic concept.
Capsule coffee machines always reminded me of old Polaroid cameras - you'd pay a premium for the initial price, only to break the bank on refills later
I still remember the two times we used the night mode feature. Once, we arrived around midnight, only to find the cash register closed for maintenance. We waited for 40 minutes, and I was fuming! It was a regular occurrence, even on weekdays, with a long line of customers waiting to make their purchases.
Fast forward to today, and the gift options at M.Video have increased, but the thrill of shopping in the middle of the night is gone
Another time, around 2014, my husband and I went shopping for my mother-in-law's foot bath in the middle of the night. It's a normal occurrence for me and my family, but we decided to play it safe that time and arrived at 2 am. To our surprise, we weren't the only ones in the store...
The third story. A negative one.
I was 20 years old and dreaming of marriage, a diamond ring, and the Maldives. But what I really wanted was a DVD player. I was obsessed with movies and even had a good understanding of film. I even landed a job at a video store, where we were allowed to take products home, but unfortunately, I could only watch movies on my computer, not on the couch in front of the TV.
In 2025, a computer is a laptop, but old-timers remember that a real computer is a tower, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers...
And then, on some holiday – maybe it was my birthday or New Year's – my mom agreed to get me a DVD player as a gift. Flat-screen TVs were just starting to appear back then and were ridiculously expensive. We had an old but quality Sony TV at home.
We went to the store on Krasnoarmeyskaya and told the salesperson about the inputs and outputs on our TV. He said we needed to get a writing DVD player, as the one we had wouldn't be compatible. A regular one cost between 800 and 2,000 rubles, while the writing Sony one was 6,800. We paid the money and headed home. I was the happiest person in the marshrutka the whole way, clutching the box to my chest.
At home, I was in tears. The DVD wouldn't connect to our TV. It just didn't have the right ports.
I used to buy flat-screen TVs on order, but now I just pick one up
I spent a few days agonizing over whether to return the media player, so I finally headed to the store to do just that. But when I got there, I hit a roadblock. The salesperson told me that, according to the law, technically complex household items aren't eligible for returns within 14 days. Are you kidding me?! They'd sold me this media player for the equivalent of my monthly salary, and now they were refusing to take it back?!
I was fuming, to say the least. I hadn't set foot in that store for a year, and I'd been avoiding them altogether.
But then the prices on plasma TVs plummeted, and we ended up buying a TV that I could hook up to my DVD player. Let's just say I was over the moon.
Story number four: The competition
For over 10 years, my go-to store was always 'M. Video', and I never strayed. Not even after the whole media player debacle. I just stopped buying electronics altogether. I'd go to specialized mobile phone stores, and that was it.
I guess you could say it wasn't really necessary... At some point, I just ran out of space on my kitchen counter for all my gadgets
And then 'Yulmart' came along and shook things up. It was the first marketplace I'd ever seen. At first, it was just their own products, but eventually they started bringing in outside sellers. And here's the amazing part: they offered a guarantee, and they actually stuck to it.
I've been buying mobiles only from specialized stores for a long time, but I've been going to "M.Video" or Re:Store for my last few purchases.
After I completely wore out my Medela breast pump and it just stopped working, I had to return it under warranty! I mean, why would I buy electronics anywhere else when I have a store that sells not only electronics, but also baby food, phone cases, and trash bags? And then I can just walk into a comfortable pickup point (which, by the way, was open 24/7 back then, unlike the "M.Video" on Krasnoarmeyskaya which is no longer open), grab a glass of water from the water cooler (it's been hot in Rostov for six months), and wait in line on a soft couch.
"M.Video" is a retail giant.
I left Rostov thinking that "M.Video" was done for and would soon close down. Meanwhile, I was predicting a bright future for "Yulmart".
As it turned out, everything was the opposite. By the time we bought our apartment in St. Petersburg, renovated it (basically finished the renovation!), "Yulmart" had folded, while "M.Video" had expanded to almost every shopping mall.
Over the past 20 years, "M.Video" has swallowed up all its competitors.
At some point, 'Sviaznoy' fell apart, 'Technosila' disappeared, 'MediaMarkt' lost its steam. But 'Eldorado' and 'M. Video' are still going strong - they've been one network since 2018.
Story five: Matryoshka.
'M. Video' is like a husband who's worn out, a bit of an old nag, but you know you're stuck with him. We were together in Rostov, and then we started our journey in St. Petersburg together.
But over the past few years, there's been one catch - and that's the marketplace.
Sometimes, when I'm shopping for electronics, I catch myself thinking: 'We have no idea what this is. If we knew what this was, we'd be fine, but we have no idea what this is.'
I get it - you need to keep up with the times. 'M. Video' has set up shop on various platforms. As a fan of 'MegaMarket', I have a funny story to share with them.
Two years ago, around New Year's, 'MegaMarket' started handing out generous promo codes. People were thrilled to get their rewards and were eager to spend.
Besides the pot and blender, you can buy a ton of gift ideas for lovely ladies at 'M. Video'
My partner surprised me with a Dyson hair dryer, but I only agreed to buy it from an official retailer, and for me, that's still "M.Video" and "Eldorado".
I placed the order with a discount code through "MegaMarket" and went to pick it up at "M.Video". The Dyson was the real deal, but it came with a sneaky, flat plug.
The cashier groaned when he scanned my hair dryer and said that if we'd bought it directly from them, the adapter for 300 rubles would have been a gift from the store, but since we didn't, I had to pay.
Considering that "MegaMarket" not only gave me a great discount code but also a killer cashback, which my family then used to order groceries from "KupiKupi" for five months, I'm still trying to wrap my head around it.
A vacuum cleaner is a necessary item in any household, but a robot vacuum left me disappointed
I'm not sure how beneficial it is for the store to sell through marketplaces. Over the past few years, I've noticed that there are significantly fewer sales consultants in the stores. And they're not trained the same way they were 20 years ago.
Winter gear, as the cold sets in, the store shelves start to fill up with space heatersBack then, the sales associate in the ironing department knew their stuff. Nowadays, the consultants are young kids with hungry eyes, basically saying, 'Lady, just buy something.'
The Bottom Line
I used to be a loyal customer. If I felt comfortable shopping at a store, I'd be willing to pay a bit more. Now, I've broken my own rules. If 'M. Video' has something that interests me, I'll go. If not, I won't.
At one point, I went to 'M. Video' and didn't see any familiar brands. It was all Chinese no-name products. Eventually, things evened out.
Not many options to spend 500 bonus pointsI'm not sure if there are people out there who get 10,000 bonus points like 'Letuál', but I usually get 500.
With 500 bonus points, the purchase isn't too expensive.
My Latest Purchase
I recently bought a frying pan. I ordered it through the online store.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot. "M.Video" and "Eldorado" are now sort of marketplaces themselves. When placing an order, you need to check who the seller is. There was a crazy influx of some individual entrepreneurs at one point. Whom would you then ask for a guarantee?
The Main Advantage of "M.Video" - Open Product Display
The main advantage of "M.Video" remains the open product display, where you can come and 'try out' most of the products.
In 2017, I needed to buy a fridge, and I thought, what's the difference - they all cool equally I then chose Candy - a fridge and a washing machine with a dryer. The fridge turned over after a year and a half! And my washing machine was even worse - it tore so many clothes that I lost count of the money I spent
The two-door fridge - a dream that's crushed the moment you see the tiny space inside when you get to the store Welcome to the future! For me, seeing the fridge's build quality in person was a game-changer. I'd seen all the specs online, but nothing beats seeing it for yourself. I started paying attention to the little things that matter.
Welcome to the world of tech!
I've got to give a shoutout to our awesome shopping experience at 'M.Video' - it's definitely worth five stars and my recommendation.
