A Wild Ride with a Heart: 'Heart of Parma' Review

summarizeEditor's Summary

I just watched 'Heart of Parma' at the cinema, and I'm still reeling from the experience. This historical drama is a wild ride that'll keep you on the edge of your seat. The clash between the Great Moscow Principality and the ancient Perm lands of Parma is a story of passion, loyalty, and forbidden love. With its stunning landscapes, impressive battles, and captivating performances, this movie is a must-see for fans of epic dramas. However, some viewers might find the excessive darkening of the Moscow Principality and the explicit content to be off-putting. The film's visuals are stunning, with a perfect blend of sweeping vistas and intimate close-ups. The cinematography is breathtaking, and the music perfectly complements the on-screen action, adding to the emotional impact. But be warned, the runtime is quite long, and some scenes feel a bit rushed, which can make it hard to follow the plot. Overall, 'Heart of Parma' is a game-changing film that'll leave you breathless and wanting more.

Plot:
'Heart of Parma' is an epic drama that tells the story of the clash between two worlds: the Great Moscow Principality and the ancient Perm lands of Parma, inhabited by pagans. The heroes and ghosts, princes and shamans, Voguls and Muscovites come face to face. The fate of Russian Prince Mikhail, who fell in love with the young witch Tichert, a lamiya capable of shape-shifting into a lynx, hangs in the balance. The passion for the pagan woman and the loyalty to forbidden love, a campaign against the Voguls, bloody battles, and a brief peace, the battle between Moscow and Parma – all these trials await the hero, where giving up one's life is less scary than betraying one's own.
Heart of Parma (2022, film)Main Characters
Prince Mikhail (Alexander Kuznetsov) is a man who can't stand up for himself. Nobody wants to pay him tribute because they know he can't do anything about it. Mikhail tries to resolve everything through diplomacy, and sometimes he succeeds. But when it's time to fight, he acts bravely and courageously. From a young age, he's been in love with Tichert (Tiche). She reciprocates his feelings, but a lamiya possesses her, and she starts to "witchcraft".
The Heart of Parm (2022, film)Ticherta (Elena Yerbakova) still remembers the day she arrived in the ancient fortress of Cherdyn as a little girl, searching for her father who had lost everything. Ticherta believed in the pagan gods and when she touched the sacred idol, the Golden Maiden, a lamia (a type of serpent) took over her body. And that's how a kind girl turned into a 'wild woman'
The Heart of Parm (2022, film) The Heart of Parm (2022, film)Polyud (Sergey Puskepalis) - a centurion who has been serving Prince Mikhail since childhood. He's always there to help in times of need, offering wise advice and guidance.
Eписcop Iona (Evgenei Mironov) arrives in the fortress of Cherdyn to convert everyone to Christianity. At first, he's a bit rough around the edges, but he eventually softens and shows compassion. He's a devout man who can't accept that the wife of Prince Mikhail refuses to convert, and he writes a denunciation to Moscow.
And there are many more characters who can't be considered secondary - they're all an integral part of the story and the time period.
The Heart of Parm (2022, film)About the film.
I think the movie is more historical and it tackles a period where there's a change of religion: from paganism to Christianity. In Soul of the Heart, it's clear that this transition was really tough for the entire people. They didn't understand why the 'new God' was better than the idols they worshipped their whole lives, and they themselves. That's why the wife of Prince Michael can't accept it:
my gods and I are fine.
Soul of the Heart (2022, film)In Soul of the Heart, the movie brings up themes like honor and dignity, helping those in need. Prince Michael doesn't lead his army to Kazan because he has a vassal and friend, the son of the Kazan prince, in his entourage. This gets him into trouble with Moscow.
Soul of the Heart (2022, film)What didn't sit well with me was how the Muscovites were portrayed. It's all terror and killing innocent civilians. And Prince Michael's actions. He lets the captured Vagul leader, Asyk, go, so Asyk can protect the Perms from the Muscovites.
Soul of the Heart (2022, film)The romance line is also well-developed, despite the 'craziness' of Prince Michael's wife. Prince Mikhail loves her deeply. Tiche too loves the prince and tries to protect him. But when she becomes a nun, things take a turn and get erotic. She can walk around naked in front of everyone, runs off, comes back, then leaves with the Khan.
Heart of Parm (2022, film)I was on the edge of my seat the whole time, despite the film's length. It's a real thrill ride. The special effects are top-notch, and there are plenty of intense battle scenes. Don't expect any light-hearted moments - there's plenty of blood and gore.
Heart of Parm (2022, film) Heart of Parm (2022, film)The film also explores some mythical characters, adding an extra layer of depth to the story.
Heart of Parm (2022, film) Heart of Parm (2022, film)I was blown away by the panoramic cinematography - it's like you're right there in the action, soaring above the landscape on a hot air balloon. It's truly immersive.
Heart of Parm (2022, film)The costumes are also noteworthy - it's fascinating to see how different cultures and regions of Russia were represented through their clothing and accessories.
The film's attention to detail in its landscapes is also impressive. The natural scenery is breathtaking.
Heart of the Parma (2022, film) Heart of the Parma (2022, film)The soundtrack is perfectly chosen. It's all meaningful and doesn't disrupt the film's viewing experience.Wrap-up.
Despite some ambiguous moments, the film is excellent. I highly recommend watching it.
Thanks for reading. Wishing you all the best!
