That's a significant chunk of time, but trust me, it flies by. I was hooked from the opening scene and couldn't look away.

Plot:

Maximus, a Roman general, has just ended a long war. He's eager to return home to his family, but fate has other plans. The Emperor Marcus Aurelius is dying, and he doesn't want his son Commodus to take over. Instead, he wants Maximus to inherit the throne, as he trusts him above all others.

The Emperor's decision sets off a chain reaction of events that will change the course of history. Commodus, however, has other ideas. He's not happy with his father's decision, and he orders Maximus and his family to be killed.

Maximus doesn't die, though. He becomes a gladiator-slave, driven by a burning desire for revenge. The rest, as they say, is history.

My take on Gladiator is that it's a film that's often misunderstood. People say it's just a typical guy movie, but I think that's a lazy criticism. You'd have to try really hard to miss the deeper themes and emotions that Ridley Scott weaves throughout the story.
