I'm still kicking myself for not publishing this review sooner. I was prescribed folic acid by my gynecologist as I was planning to get pregnant, and I wasn't convinced it would make a difference. I'd taken it before, but only sporadically. This time, I committed to taking a full course – two with a break in between – and noticed a surprising effect that made my menstrual issues a lot more manageable.
What is Folic Acid?
Folic acid plays a crucial role in synthesizing red blood cells and regulating blood production, maintaining a normal hemoglobin level. It's also essential for the proper functioning of the brain, helping to improve cognitive abilities and regulate emotional states. Plus, folic acid has a positive impact on the digestive system by speeding up the regeneration of epithelial cells. Its involvement in cell division is also vital for normal wound healing. Of course, it's worth mentioning the importance of folic acid for women planning to get pregnant or who are already pregnant. This vitamin is closely linked to fetal development, responsible for the proper formation of the nervous system and preventing various congenital defects.
Ingredients and Packaging
I'm not exactly sure about the ingredient list, but I've never paid much attention to the composition of supplements containing folic acid. The only thing I remember is that they're all sweet, probably due to the sorbitol content. If you're not a fan of sorbitol, make sure to check the ingredients before making a purchase.
Folic acid comes in a box with a rather unique design, almost as if it's specifically intended for pregnant women. I wonder if men have ever had to buy it in this kind of packaging.
The packaging has all the necessary information, including a mini instruction manual on the back. I love it when manufacturers include that level of detail.
Inside, you'll find 2 blister packs containing 25 tablets each. The tablets are intact, and the blister packs are free of defects.
My Experience with Folate
I took one tablet a day, and they're super small and easy to swallow. Sometimes, I'd just dissolve them in my mouth. I did two courses of three weeks each, with a two-month break in between.
I haven't gotten pregnant yet, so I don't have any experience with that. However, I did notice a positive effect on my menstrual cramps. Normally, I'd be a mess on the first day – the pain is so bad I'd get chills, I'd barely be able to move, and I've even passed out once (no underlying issues, no endometriosis). But even after the first course, I noticed that the pain wasn't as bad. It was still there, but it wasn't debilitating. After the second course, the effect lasted for about six months. Now that the pain is back, I'm due for another round of folate.
I also noticed a positive effect on my hair. I'd cut it to my shoulders about a year ago and was worried it would be a mess when it grew back, but nope – it looks great. I'm not sure if it's just the folate, but it does help keep my hemoglobin in check, and low hemoglobin can cause hair loss, so maybe it's a contributing factor? Either way, I'm glad I noticed the difference.
My hair is way longer now, and I'll write a follow-up review on how I've been growing it out and taking care of it.
To be honest, I was pretty happy with this folate supplement. I don't think it's overpriced, to be honest. I've always gone for the budget option from whatever brand, except maybe Solgar for under $14, but is it really worth it when you can get a noticeable effect for under $4?
If you're planning on getting pregnant, I'd actually recommend talking to your gynecologist about which one to take for the best results.
I'd definitely recommend this one, and I'm gonna grab two more while the sale's on!
