I recently stumbled upon a new short series called Emerald Paradise, which reminded me of another show with a similar title that aired on Russia 1 recently.
Features
Title: Emerald ParadiseYear: 2026Duration: 180 minutesNumber of episodes: 4 episodesRating: 16+Channel: Russia 1
Plot
Marina is the director of a hotel in St. Petersburg, owned by oligarch Oleg Krasonov. In the middle of the tourist season, Marina's son Stepan gets sick again, and she's forced to take a sudden leave of absence. Krasonov, not knowing what he's doing, fires her and starts spreading rumors that she's an unreliable employee. Marina tries to find a new job, but she's turned down everywhere. Then, she sneaks into her former boss's house on his birthday and tells him exactly what she thinks of him. To her surprise, the oligarch offers her the job of managing his unprofitable resort "Emerald Paradise". The condition is that if Marina makes it profitable by the end of the season, she can return to her old hotel. Marina agrees and starts by taking a job as a regular chambermaid at the resort.
When I first started watching this show, it felt like your typical family drama, with a strong and independent woman who puts her career first. But here's the thing: she's also got a kid who needs her attention and care.
Cast
I really liked that the show has a solid cast and a good mix of characters. Watching a drama with only two or three main characters can get a bit dull. The lead role of Marina, the businesswoman, is played by Anna Levanova. Alexey Mitin takes on the role of the resort manager, while Artem Kirin and Sofia Tatarinova play the staff. Korney Makhutin plays Marina's son, and Olga Pavlovets is the nurse.
Marina - Anna Levanov
Marina's a strong and independent woman who's been dealt a tough hand in life. She's left alone with her kid and a bunch of debt, and to top it all off, she's got to take care of her mother-in-law. Marina loves her job, though - she's worked at the resort for ages and has a great reputation. But her boss, Oleg Krasonov, is a real piece of work. He's always firing people without reason, no matter how good they are at their job.
Pavel - Alexey Mitin
Pavel, the former manager of the resort Emerald Paradise, is a pretty down-to-earth guy who works with a clear conscience, though he's got some secrets he's not willing to share with others.
Pavel immediately clicks with Marina and her son - they win him over with their charm. He prefers to keep his status under wraps when guests arrive, so he doesn't draw too much attention to himself.
About the show?
The central theme of the show, in my opinion, is Marina's concern for her child. Despite her busy schedule and high status, she shows great care for her son and makes sure to prioritize him - that's really admirable.
The second major theme in the show is employment and career development for the characters. Each character has their own calling and role - and our main character is no exception, holding a high-ranking position as a commander. In the show, we see a lot of examples of relationships between superiors and subordinates.
Of course, it wouldn't be a melodrama if there wasn't a love and romance subplot. Despite losing faith in fate, Marina still manages to connect with nice people and doesn't give up hope of finding a partner and father for her child. We also see relationships between secondary characters in the show.
This series tackles some really interesting topics, including friendship, first love, relationships with kids, parenting, family values, and kindness.
Visuals
I think the series is visually stunning. The locations are beautiful, and there are a lot of diverse scenes. The color palette is vibrant, and the overall feel of the series leaves me with a positive impression after each episode.
Music
What I love about this series is the use of vintage melodies and music from the 80s and 90s. It's great to hear something new and different, and there are plenty of old songs and melodies to go around.
My Verdict
Overall, the series checks all the boxes for a great melodrama. There are plenty of complex relationships and issues between the characters, and each episode leaves you with a little mystery to keep you hooked. I appreciate that the series has a unique storyline that unfolds gradually, rather than revealing everything from the start. The plot is engaging, and it's definitely better than some of the other shows I've seen on Russia 1.

My Takeaway
I'd definitely recommend this series - it left me feeling uplifted and engaged, even if I could see where the story was headed. I watched it with a mix of interest and anticipation, eager to see how things played out.Suspense is built up slowly, but never feels too slow or dragged out. The acting is top-notch, and I was impressed by how well the cast brought their characters to life.
