Hello everyone!
I first watched this light-hearted comedy 10 years ago when I was 20, and it really left a lasting impression on me.
I want to share my thoughts on this fun, lighthearted chick flick, Easy A.
Release year: 2010
Runtime: 92 minutes
Country: USA
Cast: Emma Stone, Penn Badgley, Amanda Bynes
Tagline:
The main character, Olive, gets teased by her classmates after a rumor spreads about her supposedly losing her virginity in high school, which has super strict values. But she turns this rumor into a badge of honor and suddenly becomes super popular, shaking up the school's social hierarchy.
Olive Penderghast is a high school student who's a total bookworm, loves to read, draw, and isn't exactly the most popular kid in school. She's basically invisible to her classmates. After a boring weekend, she tells her friend a totally made-up story about hooking up with a college student. Their conversation gets overheard by another girl, and soon the whole school is buzzing with rumors about Olive's supposed promiscuity.
Let's take a look at Olive's 'wild' weekend: singing in the shower, dancing in front of her dog, and sewing.
Olive was basically a total wallflower before all this drama went down. She dressed and acted super conservatively.
But as soon as the rumors about her 'wild' behavior started spreading, everyone was talking about her and looking at her. She became the outcast in her school.
I loved how our protagonist decided to shake things up and become the school's resident wild child. At least, that's how it looked on the outside. In reality, she wasn't actually getting into any drama or hookups. She just bought a ton of sexy outfits and ironed a bold 'A' onto them. And, man, she was the talk of the school!
Olive's outfits were seriously eye-catching: tight corsets in all sorts of colors, complete with ruffles. Black glasses, a string of pearls around her neck... it was all super alluring and only added to the gossip and rumors surrounding our schoolgirl.
Let's be real, it's always tough for the brainiacs and quiet kids in school - everyone just sees them as a shortcut to getting good grades. But when one of them suddenly becomes the talk of the town, it's a whole different story. Everyone's talking about it, and the rumors only get juicier with each retelling. It's like a game of telephone, where each person adds their own twist to the original story.
I was a total bookworm in school and college, always content to spend my evenings studying, reading, watching movies, and dancing at home. When I first saw the movie 'Good Girls', I saw a lot of myself in the main character. I mean, I was always coming up with lame excuses to get out of social events and gatherings that didn't really interest me. I'd much rather spend my free time curled up with a book, watching a movie, or practicing my dance moves. But after my 21st birthday (about six months after I first saw the movie, weird coincidence or not), I finally started to get into the whole social scene. I loved going to clubs, and looking back at my old photos, I can see why my style back then was so similar to the main character's. I guess on some subconscious level, I'd internalized her image and wanted to live it out for myself – to be the life of the party and turn heads with my bold style. I mean, I'd spent years being a total wallflower, so it was nice to finally break out of my shell. Of course, I didn't get into any trouble, and I'm glad about that! I wouldn't wish that kind of reputation on my worst enemy. Now, those outfits are collecting dust in my closet, and I've long since taken down those photos from social media. What seemed cool in my early twenties now just seems a bit too wild and reckless in my thirties.
The music in the movie is infectious – I loved the upbeat modern tracks. One of them even became my go-to jam. 😍 A few of the songs were stuck on my phone's ringtone for ages (I should probably give them another listen).
I was also impressed by the variety of locations in the movie: from the main character's home to her school, cafes, and parties at her friends' houses.
The main character's parents were a highlight for me: they're super supportive and trusting of their daughter. They have this really friendly, open relationship with her. Her mom, Olivia, is particularly memorable – she's got some wild stories about her own youth.
The acting in the movie is top-notch: the cast delivers some really natural, authentic performances. They do a great job of capturing the different social cliques in school, and they tackle some heavier themes like early relationships and teacher-student relationships in a way that's both lighthearted and thought-provoking.
The movie is definitely a girl-power kind of film, focusing on female friendships and the challenges that come with growing up.
The movie's a total breeze to watch, and it's hilarious from start to finish. But it also makes you think: were we actually good to our classmates? Did we ever bully them? Did we spread rumors about them? Were we the good guys, or were we more like the characters in this comedy?
Editor's Summary
I gotta say, Easy A is a light-hearted comedy that really resonated with me back in the day. I first watched it 10 years ago when I was 20, and it's still a fun, feel-good movie that I'd recommend to anyone. The film's got a great cast, including Emma Stone, Penn Badgley, and Amanda Bynes, and it's a total blast to watch. Not gonna lie, it's a total game changer if you're looking for a fun, lighthearted chick flick.
