A Letdown from a Beloved Author

summarizeEditor's Summary

I was really looking forward to Daria Debmare's new book, but unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations. The story started strong, but as I kept reading, I couldn't shake off the feeling that it was missing something special. The writing style, in particular, felt quite different from her earlier works, like the Maria Karavai series. While I appreciate that authors evolve and try new things, this book just didn't have the same magic as her previous ones. It's a decent read, but not what I was hoping for from this talented author. The story's disjointed feel and uneven pacing made it hard to get fully invested in the characters and their journeys. I'm still trying to wrap my head around how a book that started with so much promise ended up being such a letdown. I'd been waiting for a new release from Daria Debmare for five long years, and when I finally got my hands on this one, I devoured it in no time. But the excitement didn't last long. What struck me most about this book was how different it felt from Debmare's previous work, especially after her iconic Maria Karavai series. I found myself thinking, 'Is this really the same author?' more than once. I get that people change and styles evolve over time, but there was something magical about those early books that I just didn't feel in this one.
- Hardcover book, newsprint paper, 320 pages.
- Year of publication: 2025
- Publisher: EKSMO
- Age restrictions: 16+
On the back cover, you'll find a brief summary of the story:
Here are some photos of the book's first pages:
This book really threw me for a loop. I'm used to Debmare's style being more... I don't know, magical, I guess. But this one just didn't have that same spark. It's not like I've never read a disappointing book before, but this one felt like a total letdown.
At first, I was drawn into the world of Nikka, a teacher with eyes that seemed to hold a thousand unspoken questions. Her life, it seemed, was a mystery waiting to be unraveled - a mother who left her as a child, and a father who was a physicist, but whose quiet, gentle nature only served to highlight Nikka's own enigmatic presence. But beneath the surface, there was a darkness lurking, a sense of unease that only grew as the story progressed.
And then, just when I thought I knew what was going on, Nikka found herself in a whole new world - a world of poetry, passion, and family secrets. She became the secretary of a famous poet, a man whose words had captivated thousands, but whose life was far from perfect. The summer she spent at his dacha, surrounded by his children and wives, was supposed to be a temporary escape, but it turned into a tragedy.
And then, in an instant, the poet's life was over. In the silence of the bathroom, his world came crashing down. And as the world held its breath, waiting for the truth to come out, the secrets that had been hiding in plain sight began to surface. Murder. It wasn't just a random act, or a tragic accident. It was cold, calculated.
Now, as I look back on the story, I'm left with more questions than answers. Who among the poet's loved ones could have wanted him dead? Whose hands were strong enough to end the life of a creator? Nikka, with her strange, piercing gaze, is at the center of it all, and it's up to her to untangle the web of lies and deceit. But as for me, I'm left wondering about the secrets of Nikka herself...
Unfortunately, the story ends without providing any real closure. It's like the author threw away the key to the mystery, and I'm left with more questions than answers.
I've got to say, I was really disappointed with the character development in this book. Nikka, in particular, didn't impress me. She came across as annoying, and the other characters weren't much better. I mean, where's the depth? Where's the complexity? It's like the author took a step back and said, 'Oh, I don't need to try anymore.'
The plot was predictable, and the twists were few and far between. I mean, I've read better thrillers at the library. It's like the author phoned it in, rather than putting in the effort to create something truly memorable.
Rating: 4/5 stars. I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to make up their own minds. But for me, it was a disappointment from start to finish.
My reviews of other books by this author: The Network of Pigeon Lovers; How to Get Back in Time and Solve a Murder; The Ghost of the Heavenly Jerusalem
