Built in 2003, it's situated on the site where the Bolsheviks executed the last Russian tsar, Nicholas II, and his entire family. That's where the Romanov dynasty came to an end. Knowing this history, you can't help but feel a sense of reverence when you step inside.

Inside the Church:
As you step inside the cathedral, you'll notice it's divided into two distinct parts: the lower church and the upper church. It's like they're symbolizing earthly life and life in the heavens.
The lower church is home to a fascinating exhibit on the history of the Russian royal family, a memorial to the victims who were executed here, and a miniature model of the Church of the Blood of the Savior.
The central area of the lower church is dimly lit, with plenty of candles and icons. The somber atmosphere really drives home the scale of the tragedy that took place here.
All members of the royal family were eventually canonized, meaning they were recognized as saints for their suffering in the name of their country.
You can even leave a prayer note right next to the icon of the royal family.
Next to the lower church is a museum and a church gift shop.
You can access the upper church from the lower one either by walking out and back in or by taking the internal staircase – and taking a moment to admire the beautiful frescoes of saints along the way.
The upper church is breathtaking – the high ceiling, the light colors, the spaciousness, and the abundance of light all come together to create a sense of grandeur and joy. The atmosphere is truly celebratory.
Walking around this church, I was struck by the massive iconostasis, covered in countless icons, and the image of Christ at the very top of the dome, looking down on us all.
The columns of the church are adorned with saints bearing various male names - you can even try to spot the names of your relatives or close friends.
I found the royal family's genealogy to be particularly fascinating!
You can even buy candles at the top of the church to place for the living or the deceased.
