My impressions.
At first, I thought this film would be a standard horror movie, but I'd classify it more as an art house film. The Mexicans did a great job of making something that leaves you wondering what you just watched. They threw a lot of twists and turns, and it takes some time to figure out what they're trying to convey. Let's take a look at the main characters.
Valeria's a pregnant woman who's either having a severe mental breakdown due to her condition or was never fully healthy to begin with. Her visions or hallucinations are terrifying, and they're making it hard for her to distinguish reality from her own imagination.
Raúl's a loving husband who's worried about Valeria's strange behavior. He eventually gets tired of the weird things happening around her and starts to wonder if she's losing her grip on reality.
I'm not a doctor, but even I could tell that the OB-GYN was clueless. He didn't lift a finger to help his patient - the main character - and just stood there looking confused and out of his depth.
At first, we see a happy couple living their best lives together. But then Valeria finds out she's pregnant, and things take a dark turn. She starts seeing terrifying things that drive her to the brink of hysteria. It's seriously unsettling to watch, but not quite a full-fledged horror movie.
There were a few jump scares, but overall, it's more of a psychological thriller about a woman's fragile mental state during pregnancy.
The further it goes, the more I'm left questioning what's real and what's just the main character's imagination. Despite its flaws, the movie's got a grip on you, and you'll find yourself hooked, wondering how it all ends.
