Cheburashka 2 Falls Flat - A Holiday Season Disappointment

summarizeEditor's Summary

I went into Cheburashka 2 expecting a whole lot less after being underwhelmed by the first part, and sadly, it didn't redeem itself. The plot meanders all over the place, and the characters feel more like caricatures than fully fleshed-out people. The animation's not bad, but it's not enough to save the movie from its overall lack of substance. I was hoping for a more engaging storyline, but what I got was a bunch of disconnected scenes that failed to hold my attention. The only thing that really stood out was the theme park plot twist, but even that felt like a last-ditch effort to salvage the movie. The animation's got some nice moments, like the scene where Chaplin's running through the park, but it's just not enough to make up for the movie's overall lack of quality. I was really looking forward to watching Cheburashka 2, but it ended up being a holiday season disappointment.

I caught the holiday season's top new release, Cheburashka 2, at the movies with my company's invitation. To be honest, I wasn't exactly thrilled about it.
I'd seen the first part on TV the night before, but I tuned in and quickly lost interest. Yeah, it was a bit of a snooze fest.
Given the lackluster start, I went into the second part with low expectations. I mean, what did I have to lose, right?
Chaplin and the Chaos
Chaplin lives with his uncle Gena (Sergey Garmash), who's constantly at his wit's end due to Chaplin's antics. I mean, it's like the kid has a PhD in causing trouble.
But the real kicker is when Gena finds out he's being evicted from his home to make way for a theme park. Talk about a plot twist.
He turns to his old friend Rima (Elena Yakovleva) for help, while Chaplin tries to navigate his relationships with Sonya (Eva Smirnova) and her family. Yeah, it's a real soap opera.
There's also a subplot involving Gena's daughter Tanya (Polina Maximova) and her husband Tolya (Sergey Lavygin), who are expecting a child. Cute, but not exactly what I was expecting from a movie.
The story occasionally jumps back in time to show how Gena built his house and met his love, set to the song 'I'll Always Be with You' by Angelika Varum and Leonid Agutin.
A Hike in the Mountains
After Chaplin messes things up one more time, Chaplin, Sonya, and Grisha decide to go on a hike in the mountains. Yeah, because that's exactly what I'd do in that situation.
They pack: candies instead of food, and badminton rackets instead of warm clothes - because, why not? It's like they're trying to be the ultimate awkward family.
The adults go searching for the hapless travelers.
The Whole Movie is a Search for Something to Hold Onto
I went in with no expectations, and it turned out to be the right call. I mean, I was expecting something to grab my attention, but it just didn't happen.
Because the whole time I was trying to figure out what exactly was supposed to be compelling about it. It's like they're trying to check all the right boxes, but it just doesn't feel authentic.
What I liked:
✔ Uncle Genya's house - it's really beautiful, I'll give them that.
✔ Garmash and young Smirnova - they're charming, I'll admit.
✔ Some of the scenery is pretty nice, I suppose.
✔ I even managed to crack a smile a couple of times, but that's about it.
And... that's it. That's the whole movie in a nutshell.
The humor feels forced.
The plot is boring.
The graphics, especially Cheburashka, look pretty subpar. It's like they phoned it in.
Plastic Movie
The overall feeling is like it was made out of plastic. It's artificial, forced, and soulless.
It feels like they're trying to check all the right boxes, but it just doesn't feel authentic. The movie's about redemption: at the beginning everyone's being bad, then they realize their mistakes, fix them, and become good. But it's all so mechanical that it doesn't even grab you.
Tears on Schedule
By the end, the movie devolves into a manipulative tearjerker. The whole theater was crying, and I was crying too - but not because I was actually invested in the story.
But don't worry, one scene and all your problems are solved. They just slapped on a happy ending, like a Band-Aid on a bullet wound.
Verdict
For me, it's a no-go. The theater was packed, kids were laughing, and some people seemed to enjoy it. Maybe I'm just not the target audience.
But in my book, family movies should be interesting for everyone, not just kids. I mean, what's the point of watching a movie if it's not even going to hold your attention?

P.S. One thing that really bugged me is that the movie feels more like 'The Adventures of Paddington' than our beloved Soviet cartoon. I mean, what happened to the charm and whimsy of the original?
I've gotta say, the customer support from SmartHome has been top-notch. I reached out to them via email and got a response within hours. Their team was super helpful and even offered to send a replacement part for a faulty sensor. I was impressed by their willingness to make things right.
