The Great Debate: Dry Food or Natural Goodness? My Hesitations About Feeding My Cat

summarizeEditor's Summary

Feeding your cat can be a daunting task, especially when it comes to deciding between dry food and natural goodness. As a cat owner, I've been there too, and I'm here to share my honest experience with you. After my cat's spaying operation, I started researching his diet and discovered that spayed cats tend to overeat and gain weight. I experimented with natural food, but it was a hassle to balance the micronutrients, and my cat just wasn't a fan. Now, I stick to a good quality cat food, and it's been a game changer for his health and happiness. But, I still have some hesitations about feeding my cat, and I'm here to share them with you. I've found that a good quality cat food can be a great value for money, offering a balance of quality ingredients and affordability. However, it's essential to choose a food that meets your cat's individual needs, and to consult with your veterinarian if you have any concerns.

Hello there!
When my cat first joined the family, we didn't give much thought to what to feed him. There's a staggering array of cat food out there - dry and wet, budget-friendly and premium. But after the spaying operation, we started thinking about his diet. Not that the vet clinic told us to, but I'd read that spayed cats tend to overeat and gain weight, and my cat was already a bit on the larger side.
At first, I wanted to feed him only natural food, and I even made a few half-hearted attempts to do so. But after reading up on the subject, I decided it was easier and cheaper to buy a good quality cat food and stick to that. With natural food, you have to work out the proportions of all the micronutrients yourself - a chore I didn't feel like tackling. Plus, our cat just wasn't a big fan of it. I'd buy chicken livers, and he'd eat them, but without much enthusiasm. And the prices for chicken hearts, kidneys, and the like are pretty steep around here.
So we decided to switch to dry food and avoid the hassle.
Since we're new to this whole cat-owning thing, we started with Purina One, and we've been using it for a few months now. We're on our fourth pack, and I've formed some opinions about this food.
I've been feeding my cat PURINA ONE dry food for neutered cats and spayed cats, with beef and wheat, 750g for a while now, and I've got to say it's been a game-changer.
My Experience with PURINA ONE
Weight: 425g, 750g. I've only purchased these specific weights, so I can't comment on the others.Manufacturer: MoscowShelf life: 1.5 years. I've got a while before I need to worry about that, though!
Value for Money and Where to Buy
I've found PURINA ONE to be widely available in most pet stores, supermarkets, and even online. The prices do vary, though - I've seen it for as low as 199 rubles for the 425g pack at Bristol, but it was 274 rubles at Fix Price. If you're looking for a better deal, I'd recommend buying the larger 750g pack, but make sure you're getting it from a specialized pet store. The prices on WB are just crazy, so it's best to avoid those.
Packaging and Design
The packaging is bright green, with a clear label indicating that it's for spayed and neutered cats. I've purchased this food multiple times before, and the packaging looks pretty much the same. If you're looking to save some money, it's definitely worth considering the larger packs - I've seen 1.5kg and 3kg packs available at some stores, and they're a great value for the price.
I've got the Purina One dry cat food for neutered cats and spayed cats, with beef and wheat, 750g right here. Behind the product, you'll find all the necessary info: ingredients, manufacturer, and dosage recommendations: I've got the Purina One dry cat food for neutered cats and spayed cats, with beef and wheat, 750g right here. I've got the Purina One dry cat food for neutered cats and spayed cats, with beef and wheat, 750g right here. The packaging has a zip lock, which is super convenient. The packaging itself is a bit noisy, and my cat from another room can hear me opening it - they come running at top speed!)

📌 INGREDIENTS:
I took a close look at the ingredients, and I didn't see anything that's off-limits.

📌 COLOR, SMELL, TEXTURE:
It looks like dry biscuits, but in my opinion, wet food looks more appetizing and appealing to my cat. Still, they never turn down dry food.
Honestly, I think all these cat foods smell the same, and I'm not a fan of the smell.
PURINA ONE dry cat food for neutered cats and sterilized cats, with beef and wheat, 750g reviewI've tried adding these kibble bits to chicken broth, and they don't soak up too much and turn into mush.xa0
📌 VALUE FOR MONEY:
The serving proportions are listed on the packaging. The dosage depends on the weight of your pet. My cat's a decent size, 4.5 kg.
PURINA ONE dry cat food for neutered cats and sterilized cats, with beef and wheat, 750g reviewOur serving size should be 80g per day, which needs to be split into two portions (morning and evening). I actually measured out 40g of food (that's the daily serving) on my kitchen scales.
PURINA ONE dry cat food for neutered cats and sterilized cats, with beef and wheat, 750g reviewSo, I'm not sure how long the food will last you - that's a personal thing, depending on your pet's weight. We find that the food lasts us about two weeks, but that's because I don't always give my cat the dry food; sometimes I give him the wet Purina One too.
To avoid weighing out the food each time, it's better to use a measuring cup.
Kibble for my cat, PURINA ONE dry food for neutered cats and spayed cats, with beef and wheat, 750g review I've got the leftover protein pack still in the bag with the food.
Kibble for my cat, PURINA ONE dry food for neutered cats and spayed cats, with beef and wheat, 750g review Kibble for my cat, PURINA ONE dry food for neutered cats and spayed cats, with beef and wheat, 750g review General Impressions and Results:
I've had cats my whole life, and honestly, we've never really put too much thought into their food. When it comes to my cat, my main concern is related to his neutering. I've heard a lot about how poor nutrition can lead to kidney stones, and unfortunately, that's more common in neutered cats. Plus, neutered cats tend to overeat, which brings its own set of problems. Of course, it's easier to just buy commercial food that's already balanced for the animal's specific needs – taking into account both their neutered status and weight.
I've been hesitant to switch my cat to dry food, mainly due to the common misconceptions surrounding it. Some people believe it'll cause constipation, that cats will become picky eaters, or that certain ingredients might be detrimental to their health. Plus, there's the notion that homemade food is cheaper. But let me share my personal experience.
PURINA ONE dry cat food for neutered cats and spayed cats, with beef and wheat, 750g review When we were feeding my cat homemade food, he had a very loose stool for about two weeks. Later on, I found out that this was due to his body adjusting to the new diet. It's either go for the variety and balance of homemade food or stick to a single brand. As soon as we switched to dry food, I noticed that my cat's stool normalized, he started drinking more water (he used to be quite finicky about water), his shedding decreased, and the hairballs stopped appearing everywhere. He's become more energetic and playful, which is quite surprising given that many people assume that neutered cats become less active. Our cat, however, is full of life and energy. He loves playing and running around, something he used to show little interest in before.
PURINA ONE dry cat food for neutered cats and spayed cats, with beef and wheat, 750g review I've also read that dry food is essential for cats' oral health, much like how dogs need bones. My cat enjoys crunching on these little biscuits, and his breath doesn't smell as bad as it used to.
I've even started using these pet wipes pet wipes\ as a makeshift placemat for their food bowls.

Kibble for cats PURINA ONE dry food for neutered cats and spayed cats, with beef and wheat, 750 g reviewOne major concern is definitely the dosing - my cat's a master manipulator and often hungry, so he'll still demand more even when he's full. I find it tough to resist those pleading eyes, but I'm trying to be more mindful and only give him what he needs. Kibble for cats PURINA ONE dry food for neutered cats and spayed cats, with beef and wheat, 750 g reviewFrom personal experience, I've found that dry food is harmless - it's actually more convenient for both me and my cat, as I don't have to worry about measuring out precise vitamin and mineral ratios. Plus, it's easier to mix things up and provide a varied diet, which is essential to keep my cat interested. Ideally, I'd like to give him something new every day, but that's just not feasible for me. That's where commercial food comes in - it saves me time and ensures my cat gets a balanced meal.I'll wrap up by saying that when we visited the vet clinic, we asked about food, and the doctor said there's no significant difference - just choose one or the other (dry food or wet food). At the pet store, the consultant told me there's no difference between regular cat food and food for neutered cats, it's the same composition. The label 'for sterilized cats and neutered cats' is just a marketing gimmick.
I'm no expert and not a vet, but for me, this question is pretty debatable: what's better for the cat. But if I look at my cat's behavior and overall well-being, I see improvements in both appearance and behavior.
