Two Unlikely Friends, Several Human Fates, and a Friendship Test: A Gripping Teen Drama
Hello readers!
I first saw the 2002 German film "Big Girls Don't Cry" when I was 12, and I've been rewatching it ever since. It's weird that it's not super popular, considering it tackles some tough and timely issues - like the relationships between kids and parents, common family problems, moral choices, and the importance of making tough decisions. The film also explores the theme of friendship, which I think is really important. You'll see the story of four different girls, two of whom are the main characters.

The 2002 film 'Big Girls Don't Cry' is a great example of female friendship.
People were talking about their friendship:
“You two had real love from the very start.”
Best friends - high school students Kati and Stefie, had been inseparable since childhood. They were polar opposites, but nothing could ever break their unbreakable bond.

Kati (played by Anna Maria Müet) lives in a poor family with no love or understanding. Behind her strict and devout mother's back, she smokes and has sex. That's basically the only thing that sets her apart from a 'good' girl, but she's got a big and kind heart - something her mom completely misses.

Stephanie (played by Caroline Hefter) lives in a happy and wealthy family where there's always love, friendship, and joy. She's the favorite daughter, who trusts her parents and thinks they're the perfect example of a happy couple.

One day Stefani discovers that her beloved father, whom she thought was also a faithful and perfect husband to her mother, is having an affair. After finding out that her father's mistress has a daughter - Tessa, Stefani's classmate, she decides to take revenge on the mistress through her daughter. Little did anyone know that this decision would set off a chain of events that would significantly affect the lives of several families and individuals in the long run.

Life's tough sometimes, but you've got to keep moving forward.
I think the person who's really got to make some tough decisions is Kati. For her, being kind and compassionate is more important than being selfish or indifferent. To be honest, with each new watch, Kati's character reveals more and more to me. Even when she's faced with betrayal from someone close, she puts her pride aside and saves them.

I really felt for Ivonne (played by Jennifer Ulrich), a secondary but tragic character who gets bullied by her father. She dreams of escaping to Paris, but to make that happen, she's forced to make a difficult choice – to star in a porn movie in exchange for a hefty sum of money.

Tessa (played by Josephine Domencich) - the daughter of Steffi, the father's mistress. She's got a great voice and dreams of being in a band. She's a complex character, and I'm not sure I fully get her. Maybe it's just me, but she doesn't seem as sweet and innocent as she appears.

Despite being a low-budget film, it's incredibly well-made, and I found myself wanting to watch it over and over. The ending is unpredictable and yet, it's also encouraging. Even though the film is about teenagers and for teenagers, I'm convinced it's also a great watch for adults, especially those with kids.
The movie 'Big Girls Don't Cry' from 2002.
'Big Girls Don't Cry' is genuinely a well-balanced teenage drama. Often, teenage movies focus primarily on the romance between a girl and a guy, but here, that theme takes a backseat, replaced by the theme of female friendship. What's more, this film is timeless. I highly recommend it.
Thanks for your time, and I hope you'll find more interesting movies to add to your collection!
