A Decent but Unremarkable Georgia Red Wine

summarizeEditor's Summary

I recently picked up a bottle of Betaneli Pirosmani red semi-dry wine, hoping to enjoy a cozy evening with my girlfriends. As a fan of Georgian wines, I was excited to try Pirosmani. While it's a decent choice, I didn't find it particularly impressive. The price was reasonable, but the quality didn't blow me away. If you're looking for a value-for-money option, this might be worth considering. However, if you're expecting a game-changer, you might be disappointed. The wine is a good option if you want something straightforward and easy to drink.

Hello everyone!
I recently picked up a bottle of Betaneli Pirosmani red semi-dry wine to hang out with my girlfriends in a cozy atmosphere.
I've always been a fan of Georgian wines, and the price of this one was pretty reasonable. Plus, I'd never tried Pirosmani before, so I was excited to give it a shot.
General Info:
Country of origin: Georgia
Volume: 0.75 l
Alcohol: 11-12% vol.
Bottling date: June 23, 2020
Price: 359 rubles
Place of purchase: Red-White store
The bottle itself is a deep olive color and looks pretty sleek. A raised logo on the top features the manufacturer's logo, and there are some appetizing grape clusters and a 'V' letter on the label.
The label has a monastery-style design with the Georgian mountains in the background, which I think adds a nice touch.
There's an excise stamp on the label, and it's applied neatly and clearly.
What threw me off was the lack of harvest year information on the back label. It's got the composition, bottling date, warnings, and manufacturer info, but no harvest year. It should be there, though.
The bottle's base is, of course, concave.
I was pleasantly surprised by how easily the thermal adhesive film came off. All I had to do was pull the tab at the edge of the strip, and the bottle was sealed with a cork stopper featuring the brand name 'Bolero and Company'. Removing the cork with a corkscrew was also relatively easy – it didn't crumble, came out whole, and I had to apply a bit of force, of course.
Ingredients
Wine made from Saperavi grapes, preservative sulfur dioxide, preservative sorbic acid.
It's worth noting that they're using only one type of grape, but two preservatives. Thankfully, the chemical aftertaste is barely noticeable.
Aroma and Color
The aroma doesn't have a complex bouquet, but it does have a pleasant fruity scent with notes of cherry.
The color is beautiful, a rich garnet hue that plays beautifully with ruby undertones in the glass.
Taste
The taste of Pirosmani Betaneli is pleasant and well-balanced. I was worried that the semi-dry wine would be too acidic, but no, the acidity is very mild and quite acceptable.
The taste of cherry is clearly present, but there's a small drawback: the wine is somewhat dry and lacks a certain smoothness. Pirosmani doesn't play with different flavors like the well-known Georgian wine brands. It's a simpler wine.
And, of course, the price is higher, but Pirosmani is more budget-friendly, and that shows.
For me, this wine is not for romantic evenings or special occasions. It's a pleasant but simple wine that's better suited for casual gatherings with friends.
The wine is light, and I don't feel too hungover the next morning. That's a relief, especially if you drink it slowly and chilled to 15-18 degrees Celsius.
But, it does lift your mood, and conversations become more intimate.
When it comes to pairing, Pirosmani is generally recommended with meat dishes, rich sauces. You can also pair it with fruits.
We took a different approach. I went for a cheesy slice, a meat-lovers, and some fresh cucumber with tomatoes.
And let me tell you, it worked out great.
The Verdict
Pirosmani wine? Absolutely delightful. But don't expect a sophisticated taste or a rich bouquet. It's a great, light, and straightforward wine – simple, yet tasty.
