Bernese Mountain Dog

This breed is a large and sturdy one, known for its distinctive tri-colored coat and friendly temperament. They're a loyal companion with a rich history and gentle nature. With their calm demeanor, they make great family pets and are relatively easy to train. They're not high-maintenance, but they do need regular grooming to keep their coats looking their best.

Why I Fell Head Over Heels for My Bernese Mountain Dog

summarizeEditor's Summary

I've had my Bernese Mountain Dog, Tasya, for a while now, and I gotta say, she's been a total game changer. Not only is she stunningly beautiful, but she's also super easy-going, intelligent, and loving. My sister's allergies weren't a concern, and she's been a great companion for our family. One thing that surprised me was how little she barks – it's almost like she's trying not to disturb the neighbors! Of course, there's the shedding issue, but that's a small price to pay for all the joy she brings. All in all, I'm so glad we decided to go with a Bernese Mountain Dog – they're worth every penny!

I'd been begging my parents for a dog since I learned how to talk, but they'd always say, 'Wait till you're older, and you can get a dog of your own!' Little did I know, 15 years later, on my graduation day, they'd surprise me with a dog that would change my life forever – a Bernese Mountain Dog named Tasya.
I was beyond ecstatic! My parents had been planning this for a while, and it was amazing to see the look on my face when they handed me the leash and introduced me to my new furry friend.
Choosing the right breed was a huge deal for us. My sister has allergies, and my mom insisted that the dog shouldn't bark at everything and disturb the neighbors. Plus, it had to be easy to train and handle. We spent a whole year researching and visiting different breeders before making our decision.
We finally settled on a golden retriever, but fate had other plans – we got invited to visit some friends, and they had a stunning Bernese Mountain Dog that left us speechless. We fell in love with her, and all our conversations were about her. We ended up canceling our plans for the golden retriever and waiting for Bernese puppies to be born. The wait was six long months.
Now, the exciting part!
We chose the puppy with the help of an expert, and she picked the best one from the litter. We got a female, and if you live in an apartment, it's often better to get a female, unless you don't mind the, ahem, 'fragrance' of male dogs. Bernese Mountain Dogs have very distinct secondary sex characteristics – males are twice the size of females and have a strong odor. Plus, they love to fight with each other, which is another reason we chose a female.
My Tasya ^^We brought Tasya home when she was 2.5 months old, and now she's two years and nine months old.
One thing I love about Bernese Mountain Dogs is that they don't destroy furniture, pull up linoleum, or try to chew through all the wires in the house. They're happy with their favorite toys, and I've seen this firsthand with Tasya.
Tasya learned to walk on a leash and then to go potty outside in no time.
The little darling!Training was a breeze – she picked up commands quickly and was always eager to please.
Bernese Mountain Dogs have a wonderful temperament. They love kids and are always gentle with them. I've never had any issues with other dogs, and Tasya gets along with everyone.
Tasya with BassI've got two cats at home, and she gets along with them perfectly – and when the kittens appear, Tasya loves to play with them.
As a Bernese Mountain Dog, she's a herding breed, so she's not going anywhere, and she won't forget about you even if she sees a squirrel. Just say 'no!' and she'll forget about the squirrel.
At home, Bernese Mountain Dogs are generally pretty chill and spend most of their time lounging around.
Summer's especially tough for them, but they love our Siberian climate. My girl loves playing in the snow, and 30 degrees below zero isn't even a problem for her.
One thing to keep in mind about this breed is that they require regular grooming. You'll need to brush their coat at least twice a week, and daily during shedding season. My Tasya's hair is everywhere, but it's worth it – her fur is so soft and fluffy, and it's a joy to cuddle and pet her. Plus, it's easy to clean up with a broom, and it doesn't get all over the furniture like some other breeds.
After a bath)I bathe my girl only from April to November, taking a 1.5-month break in between. I don't bathe her in the winter – she's happy to get clean with a good snowball fight.
Like many breeds, Bernese Mountain Dogs need regular, long walks. I'm lucky to have a nearby park, so my girl gets a good 2-3 hour walk in the evening. In the summer, we love to ride bikes together, and in the winter, we hit the slopes on our skis. If you're looking for a breed that can keep up with marathon running, the Bernese Mountain Dog isn't your best bet.
We absolutely adore our little Tasya, the Bernese Mountain Dog. She's a fantastic family pet, a great watchdog who'll defend her family, and a loving, caring companion. She's super smart and laid-back, and she's perfect for apartment living.
Love your pets? I've been spending more time with mine lately, and it's been amazing!

live_helpFeatured FAQ

Are Bernese Mountain Dogs good with children?

Absolutely! They're super patient and gentle, making them perfect for families with little ones. Just remember to socialize them well and teach the kids how to interact with them safely.

Do Bernese Mountain Dogs shed a lot?

Yes, they do! During the spring and fall, they shed their thick coat, which can be a bit overwhelming. But it's worth it for their beautiful fur.

How much exercise do Bernese Mountain Dogs need?

They need regular exercise to stay happy and healthy. Aim for at least an hour of physical activity per day, whether it's a walk, run, or playtime in the park.

Can Bernese Mountain Dogs be trained?

Yes, they can! They're intelligent and eager to please, making them relatively easy to train. Just be patient and consistent, and you'll be rewarded with a well-behaved furry friend.

Do Bernese Mountain Dogs get along with other pets?

It depends on the individual dog, but generally, they're great with other pets if socialized properly. Just introduce them slowly and under controlled circumstances, and you'll be golden.

How often should I bathe my Bernese Mountain Dog?

They don't need to be bathed too often – maybe every 2-3 months, depending on their activity level and environment. Over-bathing can strip their coat of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation.

Can Bernese Mountain Dogs be left alone for long periods?

It's not recommended to leave them alone for extended periods, as they can get anxious and destructive. If you have to leave them alone, make sure they have plenty of toys, treats, and a comfortable place to rest.

Are Bernese Mountain Dogs prone to any health issues?

Like all breeds, they can be prone to certain health issues, such as hip dysplasia and eye problems. Regular check-ups with your vet and a healthy lifestyle can help mitigate these risks.
