I Just Watched a Kirill Serebrennikov Film and I'm Still Trying to Figure Out What the Point Was

summarizeEditor's Summary

I recently watched a Kirill Serebrennikov film that left me feeling both intrigued and confused. While the director's attempt to create a thought-provoking film is commendable, the disjointed narrative and lack of cohesion ultimately fell flat. The film's use of dance and subtle suggestions to hint at the struggles of musicians was a welcome respite from the expected drama, but it wasn't enough to save the film from its overall disjointedness. I'm still trying to process what the film was trying to say, but unfortunately, it didn't quite hit the mark.

A Disappointing Experience: My Thoughts on Kirill Serebrennikov's Film
I still remember the movie and I'm left feeling like I need a cigarette, just like Viktor Tsoi did in it. The film's impact lingers, but for all the wrong reasons.
A book that changed me forever? Highly recommended! But, unfortunately, this film is not one of them.
I want to thank Kirill Serebrennikov first. While I appreciate his attempt to create a thought-provoking film, I couldn't help but feel that it fell flat.
Firstly, thanks for not beating us over the head with the musicians' struggles. You could have taken the line of addiction and alcoholism among musicians back then and turned it into a drama. Instead, the filmmakers hinted at it with dance, unbridled laughter, and a few subtle suggestions.
However, these hints were not enough to save the film from its disjointed narrative. It's like a patchwork of random details that don't quite fit together. It's a bit like talking to a fashionista who's lost their thread - they might be wearing some super expensive, rare, and exclusive gear, but it all looks tacky and laughable when put together.
The film isn't about the characters, it's about showcasing Serebrennikov's genius and skill. The characters are just a means to an end, and they're not particularly well-developed. Take the word 'сейшн' for example - it's a bit of a stretch to think that it was really in vogue back in the day.
My initial impression of the film was that it felt utterly unreal. It's like watching a play, and the black-and-white cinematography only adds to the sense of artificiality. You know when you put something in quotes, it suddenly loses its reality? That's what the entire story feels like - like it's in quotes.
When the whole Ksenia Sobchak thing blew up, and people started defending Serebrennikov's honor, I saw some of my colleagues come out in support of him. They said he didn't steal anything, and that he's as pure as a pane of glass. The only sane comment I saw was from playwright Ivan Vyrypaev, who wrote an open letter to the protesters.
Friends, let's be honest with ourselves - Kirill Serebrennikov's arrest will likely go unpunished by the authorities in power today in Russia. I see how most of you wrote letters in support, attended rallies, gave interviews, and even reached out to the president. But, honestly, it's becoming a bit of a farce. Meanwhile, most of you continue making movies, putting on plays, and getting grants from the Ministry of Culture. By collaborating with this regime and thinking that our art and activism can somehow change this country or contribute to its transformation, we're just deceiving ourselves and our nation - and that's really quite childish.
I'm done here. I know there are plenty of artists who use their craft to promote themselves, their image, and their name. And so, it's getting boring to write about this.
I spent over two hours on this drivel, and I don't want those who glance at my review to waste more time understanding the simple truth - you should only watch this film with the same motivation you'd watch a concert by Olga Buzova - to see the caricatured art and naivety of its creator.
The only redeeming quality of the film is the music of the group 'КИНО'. It's what made the film. The soundtrack is catchy and memorable, but it's not enough to save the film from its overall lackluster experience.
What I didn't like.
Firstly, it was the abundance of bare male backsides. There was a scene with a one-year-old's bottom being fondled in a way that would make a pedophile jealous. It was disgusting. But, again, thanks for not showing the messy details.
And, yeah! What was the point of the guys spreading their cheeks during the draft board examination in the story about the band 'Кино'? What's the connection to the draft board, anyway?
Secondly, and most importantly, I didn't like how the film failed to capture the spirit of those times, their relationships, and the drive that led them to success. There's nothing of that in the film. The love story seems refined, like a gentle touch.
The film's trailer is way more dynamic and interesting than the film itself. In fact, the best parts of the film are all in the trailer. It's a shame, really, because the trailer had me excited for what the film had to offer.
I give it two stars for the music of the group 'КИНО'. It's what made the film.
By the way, if you're looking for a film that will leave you feeling confused and underwhelmed, then this is the film for you.
But, if you're looking for a film that will challenge your thoughts and leave you feeling inspired, then look elsewhere.
