My Impression of 'Asunto de Mujeres': A Mix of Emotions and Disappointments
After finishing the series 'Asunto de Mujeres', I'm excited to share my thoughts.
Before diving into the positives, I want to address the negatives, as they surprised me more than the positives.
As someone who's familiar with a method for generating creative ideas in artistic professions, I believe it's essential to set aside critical thinking and throw out ideas, no matter how absurd they may seem. The second step is to incorporate logic and eliminate what doesn't work, select the best ideas, and develop them.
Unfortunately, it seems like the writers of the show skipped this second step. Many scenes appeared absurd, illogical, and even far-fetched, making me question what I was watching – a police thriller or an absurdist work.
One particular episode that comes to mind is when Dina, a young prosecutor, tries to convince a banker, Kachine, to testify. To achieve this, she has to get intimate with him. I found this absurd, especially since Dina was portrayed as an innocent young woman at that point. I couldn't help but wonder how a team like the Fiscal Service, filled with talented and dedicated women, couldn't find more respectful ways to convince people to testify. It seemed like they were saying that women had to sacrifice their dignity to get the job done.
Unfortunately, this isn't the only instance of Dina being exploited in the show. The creator has used her character in a way that's uncomfortable and unprofessional. I recall a scene where Dina takes off her clothes in an interrogation room to try and convince a suspect. It was pointless, and then there's the scene where she takes off her clothes in the Fiscal Service without anyone batting an eye. It's like they're celebrating some sort of initiation ritual. And let's not forget the scenes where Dina sleeps with two murder suspects. It's like they're trying to create a psychological drama, but instead, they've created an uncomfortable and unbelievable atmosphere.
Another thing that caught my attention is that Dina, a weak and physically fragile person, is tasked with protecting a potential victim from a serial killer. It's obvious that the killer would try to kill her, and it would have been more logical to choose someone more capable for the job.
On the other hand, Dina has a different relationship with men, seeing them as a necessary part of her job. In contrast, the other protagonist, Irina, sleeps with men because she wants to, and her list of lovers is long. Despite this, Irina remains a passionate and fiery woman, and her personality doesn't change because of her many lovers. However, it does change when her vulnerable side is revealed.
I wonder what real-life police officers would think if they saw women like the ones in 'Asunto de Mujeres'. It would be uncomfortable for them, to say the least.
If you've made it this far, you're probably wondering why I bothered watching the 16 episodes of this series. Well, I'm not one to leave a show unfinished, and in this case, it was worth it.
Now, let's move on to the positives.
The first and most notable strength of the show is its intrigue. Normally, when I watch a thriller, I can easily guess who the killer is and what their plan is, and then I get bored. But here, I couldn't even remotely guess who the maniac was until the 12th episode, when I finally came up with a theory. The plot is complex and full of unexpected twists, keeping me interested until the end.
I want to highlight the acting in the show. In particular, I want to mention Victoria Tolstoganova (I'm not a fan of hers, but she impressed me in this role) and Yuri Arkhangelsky (one of those cases where you believe in the character they've created).
Overall, I think 'Asunto de Mujeres' stands out for its high level of acting and technical quality in filming. This is particularly notable when compared to some other contemporary Russian crime dramas.
Another aspect that caught my attention is a characteristic of the show that I noticed from the beginning. I've already mentioned the protagonist Dina, a young woman with autism. She often asks questions that seem unusual for an adult, which she directs at her mentor and colleague, Irina. These dialogues between the two protagonists seem interesting, like they're turning reality on its head.
When Dina asked her questions with her usual directness, it made me think about things like: Is she the one who's crazy, or is our society the one that's lost its mind? Is it normal to live in a reality where we've become accustomed to lying to each other, doing it automatically without even questioning it? We all know we lie, but it's become normal... Is it normal to act according to what others think and not according to our own desires? I couldn't say that the series focuses on these philosophical questions, but that it touches on them is interesting.
Among the positives, I want to highlight the humor – although there's not much of it, it's present.
Overall, 'Asunto de Mujeres' has enough positives to make it worth watching, but the absurdity of many episodes is something that bothers me. I can say with certainty that any police officer wouldn't want to see this...
