I'll never forget the Sunday afternoon my husband and I stumbled upon Yusupov Garden while leaving the Yusupov Palace. We had some time to kill before our train, but our feet were screaming at us for a break.
It's just a 15-minute walk from the palace, and before we knew it, we were there, ready to unwind.
First, we passed by the House of City Institutions – that building's a real head-turner, by the way!
Next, we marveled at the old St. Petersburg trams – they look like they're straight out of the 19th century! I mean, who needs a time machine when you have these vintage trams?
Then we arrived at the entrance – and that's when we found our little slice of heaven, tucked away just a stone's throw from the city center and a major transportation hub.
I was desperate to sit down on a bench and breathe in that fresh air, taking in the views. And that's exactly what I did – it was a real retreat for my eyes, body, and soul.
The garden's small, but it's incredibly picturesque. In the middle, there's a peaceful pond with islands where the willows seem to dip their branches into the water. It's like a mini-paradise right in the heart of the city.
On the grass near the water, families were setting up picnics – it was a great sight to see. I'm not sure what would happen in my hometown if we did the same, but maybe they're more laid-back here?
Over the bridge, there were a few fishermen busy with their fishing gear. We counted six of them, all hooked on catching fish! From the other side, near the Sadowaya Street entrance, we could hear the sound of a foxtrot, and I swear, standing on that very bridge, I felt like I was in pre-war Leningrad.
The garden doesn't have any attractions or cafes – and that's exactly what makes it so perfect. Just walk, breathe, take in the views, and relax. It's the perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle of city life.
After discovering Yusupov Garden, we made a beeline for another nearby location – Izmailovsky Garden. Why not, right? We were already close, and we couldn't resist saying hello to the St. Petersburg Angel across the Fontanka River!
But that's a whole different story...
Yusupov Garden has left a lasting impression on me – one of peace, cleanliness, and a sense of calm. The only one in a hurry was the cat – I assume it's the garden's owner, busy inspecting the benches and moving from one to another with its white paws. It was like the cat knew we needed some peace and quiet.
If you live, stay, or just happen to be in the area, do yourself a favor and drop by – it's worth it, even if it's just to transport yourself back in time.
